The Longest Day
Notes: Since this movie is quite a classic, I was really eager to check it out and I had some rather high expectations. To be honest, I thought it would be better than this but still, it remains a damned good picture nonetheless. There was an impressive cast (John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Robert Mitchum, Richard Burton, Sean Connery, Rod Steiger, Bourvil, Robert Wagner, Paul Anka) and even though there were some critics that many of those actors were actually too old to portray their characters (For example, at 54 years old, John Wayne was actually twice older than Col. Benjamin Vandervoort actually was) , they were all pretty good and the story was interesting enough. I don’t know, 40 years later, Steven Spielberg made ‘Saving Private Ryan’ and even though I think this movie was vastly overrated, I have to admit that its introduction, its depiction of the D day, was just unforgettable and it was probably one of the most impressive scenes I ever saw and, compared to this, ‘The Longest Day’ is a solid feature but not as mind-blowing as this sequence. Anyway, I still think it is a fine WWII feature.

Drifting Clouds (1996)
Notes: I have seen this movie more than 15 years ago and it might be nice to re-watch it at some point. In fact, I actually saw the damned thing in the movie theatre when it was released. To be honest, I haven’t seen so many movies directed by Aki Kaurismäki but I definitely enjoyed this one a lot. Indeed, it is basically a very strong mix of drama and comedy. Above all, the humour was quite subtle and very pitch black and I guess it might be an acquired taste but I thought it was rather awesome. Anyway, I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Finnish movies.

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but it had been suggested by another Listal member and, in fact, I took me many years to finally watch the damned thing. Well, to be honest, I think I would have been more able to appreciate it when it had been released 10 years ago. Indeed, in t” read more

A good movie

“I already saw this movie in the movie theater when it was released but, since I'm a huge fan of Christopher Nolan, I was quite eager to check it out again. Well, unfortunately, even after rewatching it a few years later, the damned thing was still an incomprehensible mess, I'm afraid. I remember ver” read more

Away from Her
Notes: By now, I have seen several movies dealing with Alzheimer disease, the most famous one being probably ‘The Notebook’ but even though ‘The Notebook’ was a decent romantic feature, it gave an almost cute view on this disease (on the other hand, would you expect anything else from a book written by Nicholas Sparks?). This movie however was anything but cute and it is easily the best feature I have seen about this subject. Indeed, even though it was her directing debut, Sarah Polley did a fine job here, the acting by both leads was just amazing and the story was simply quite heartbreaking. 5 years later, Sarah Polley would finally deliver a new directing effort, ‘Take This Waltz’ , but it barely got noticed when it was released and, to be honest, even though it was a decent watch, it was a big step-down from this very impressive directing debut.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Notes: First of all, this movie was really gorgeous and it was something really unexpected from Ang Lee, considering he just directed a Western (‘Ride with Devil’), a 70's drama (‘The Ice Storm’) and a periode piece (‘Sense and sensibility’). The first time I saw this movie, it was my first contact with the wuxia genre and I really liked this flick, it gave also a new international exposure to this genre and many really neat movies followed like 'Hero' and 'House of Flying Daggers' both directed by Zhang Yimou. To be honest, after all these years, I was actually rather surprised by how small the scope actually was. Indeed, except for a fight scene in a restaurant, you usually get only a handful of characters involved. It doesn't mean that it was an issue and I especially enjoyed the sweet and gentle relationship between Li Mu Bai an Yu Shu Lien. Eventually, they would release a sequel 16 years later, produced by Netflix, but I have some serious doubts that it is really worth a look but maybe I will check it out at some point.
