Anelka: Misunderstood

A good movie

“Everyone who's slightly familiar with French football, at least, from my generation, has heard about Nicolas Anelka so I have to admit that I was quite eager to check this documentary. Indeed, pretty much from the very beginning of his career, Anelka became the black sheep of the French football, pr” read more

Monster Truck Mater
Cast : Larry the Cable Guy What was it about? Mater is a professional wrestler who works his way up the ranks from amateur to World Champion Monster Truck Wrestler, wrestling all kinds of characters along the way. When faced with his biggest opponent yet, Mater tags in his "tag team partner" Frightening McMean. My two cents: While the idea of turning Mater into a monster truck had some potential, why did they make him a wrestler as well on top of that? As usual, it was seriously random but, at least, there was some kind of plot involved dealing with his rise as a wrestler so it was probably one of the best (or one of the least tedious) of the bunch. My rating: 6/10

The Secret in Their Eyes
Notes: Somehow, it did remind me of 'Zodiac' in the way that the main character was obsessed with this case for 25 years. At first, I wonder how they would manage to keep my attention since I (thought I) knew how it would end. Eventually, many unsuspected things happened and I was captivated until the end which was quite impressive as well. I usually don't care much about such twist endings but this one gave much food for thought. I mean, did the murderer really get his rightfull punishment? Didn't Morales become a monster by treating this man this way? Didn't he throw his whole life away to get his revenge which basically meant for him to take care of his worst enemy for the rest of his life? Just like the rest of this movie, it was really intriguing and thought provoking. Basically, this flick takes its time to develop some very interesting characters, even the smaller ones, instead of throwing at us some typical boring gimmicks. Even the unconsumed love story was quite fascinating and the fact that they never ended up with each other made complete sense considering the way the characters were developed.

Me and You and Everyone We Know
Notes: Eventually, to be honest, I wasn't completely blown away but it was still definitely a very good movie. The point is that I still believe that it is rather an acquired taste and many people will be annoyed by the slow pace and the lack of plot. Personally, I thought it was definitely a different and thoughtful picture and I praise the director for trying another innovative direction in film-making. Still, it was not completely successful, as the movie was sometimes rather alienating and some other times the whole thing seemed rather to be a personal indulgence of the director. Still, there were many intriguing characters and it was nice to see someone like John Hawkes (a great underrated character actor) playing the lead instead of the usual suspects with some good looks. Anyway, I really enjoyed this movie a lot as it remains a rather unique and spellbinding feature.

An average movie

“To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Halle Berry, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even though she did win an Academy Award always 20 years ago, I’m afraid that this time is long gone and, nowadays, she usually shows up for this kind” read more

The Blair Witch Project (1999)
Notes: I remember exactly the first time I saw this movie. Back then, I was on holiday in Baltimore, my host family went to see this flick and they brought me with them. At that time, I had no idea what it was about and I was completely unaware about the whole hype surrounding this feature. To be honest, I had never seen anything like this before but, even though my host family didn't it like at all (I think there were expecting something more conventional), I thought it was a really engrossing experience. In my opinion, the biggest difference with the other found-footage features I have seen afterwards is that you don't actually see or hear anything really preposterous which made the whole thing even more unsettling. The other thing I enjoyed is that even though the 3 actors were amateurs, a typical trademark with this genre, they were actually really convincing and believable so I really cared for their predicament. I have re-watched it a couple of times through the years, I still think it held up pretty good and it is by far my favorite movie in this genre. Since then, this directing style has been unfortunately copied to death because it is so cheap and, as a result, you don't need many people to show up to make some money. To be honest, since I really liked this flick, I always had a weak spot for this genre but I have to admit that it has become tiresome by now as there is unfortunately no more creativity involved.

The Shining
Notes: Well, pretty much like anything else coming from Stanley Kubrick, it is basically another huge classic but, to be honest, it doesn't really belong to my favorites. But even so, it is seriously entertaining, I think it is probably the most accessible movie directed by Stanley Kubrick and, once again, the directing was just amazing. On top of that, Jack Nicholson gave one of his best performances and the whole thing was quite spellbinding to watch. And, yet, somehow, it was still missing something to become truly amazing, at least, that’s my opinion. Eventually, the main issue was probably the fact that this movie is and remains a Stephen King story and, to be honest, I have never been a real fan of his work. Still, I have always been amazed by how Kubrick has managed to lift up this material to such heights and among all these Stephen King books that has been adapted to the silver screen, it is easily one of the very best ones, even if King himself didn't like it at all.

A bad movie

“In spite of or because of its notorious reputation and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check this movie. Well, it was pretty terrible, that’s for sure, and pretty much nothing worked. Seriously, it seems that the makers watched ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ and decided to” read more

Notes: Seriously, it seems that the makers watched ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ and decided to deliver something even worse. At least, Anna Maria Sieklucka and Michele Morrone were both attractive and had some decent chemistry but, to be honest, they gave some really poor performances. In fact, the whole cast was really weak. The story was even worse though. Indeed, the beginning scenes barely made sense, those were very poorly put together and, obviously, the concept was rather ludicrous. This movie was based on a book and the author was apparently inspired by ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ and it was pretty obvious. Indeed, this movie displayed another really toxic relationship and, yet, according to the makers, it was actually supposed to be romantic. In fact, I don’t think that such a misguided even abusive relationship can’t somehow turn out to be romantic, even if it is rather unlikely. However, in this case, the characters never had a single conversation during which they could at least learn about each other and the main reasons why Laura did finally fall for Massimo was apparently because he had a hot body and because he let her buy pretty much anything she wanted. Concerning the sex scenes, the main reason why this movie made some waves when it was released, sure, there were 2 blowjob scenes that were pretty explicit but the other sex scenes didn’t display anything really shocking, original or interesting. Anyway, even though this movie was apparently a massive success for Netflix, it turned out to be pretty bad.
