Notes: To be honest, I always had a hard time with Wes Anderson. I mean, I always admired his work and his movies have always been visually impressive but I was missing something in his stories and I usually didn’t connect with them very well. Anyway, at last, with this movie, he finally nailed it. Indeed, he finally managed to mix his whimsical visual style and his hilarious characters with a very entertaining plot. To be honest, I still think I prefer ‘Fantastic Mr. Fox’ but this movie is definitely not far behind. Along the years, Wes Andeson has managed to get many interesting actors under his wings and it seemed that they all showed up for this movie. Indeed, every single character was played by some known figure and you might wonder if it was not really distracting but it actually worked out fine. Of course, Ralph Fiennes played the main character with a lot of gusto and he delivered once again a terrific performance. He is and remains one of the best actors of his generation and he was definitely one of the reasons why this movie worked so well. Still, at the end of the day, what was this movie all about? Nothing much, I’m afraid. But does it have to be? Not necessarily, especially when it is so entertaining.

A very good movie

“About 6 months ago, I saw ‘Uncut Gems’ but even though I did like this movie, to be honest, I haven’t been really blown away though. However, since this previous directing effort had been also really well received, I was still eager to give the Safdie brothers another shot. Well, this time aro” read more

Good Time
Notes: The one thing I did really enjoy in ‘Uncut Gems’ was the raw energy these guys brought and it was already present in this movie. Once again, it was pretty dark and bleak but what I impress me was how relentless and unpredictable the damned thing turned out to be. Seriously, pretty much every 5 minutes, you saw the main character making a left turn and their masterstroke was that it never felt like a gimmick. Indeed, even though most of his decisions would be considered as misguided in any normal context, it did somehow always make sense in his own dark and twisted world. And if you still have any doubts about Robert Pattinson’s acting talent, you should definitely check this movie. Indeed, he completely nailed this performance as he managed to make his character charismatic (how would he otherwise manage to get out of trouble every time again?) but he also removed any form of glamour attached to his public personality. You could argue that none of the characters was actually developed but giving more details about any of them might have ruined its mystic appeal. Furthermore, it actually fit Connie's way of thinking. For him, it didn’t really matter who he or the people around him were. The only thing that mattered was how he could achieve his next short-term goal and how the people around him could be of any use. Eventually, I enjoyed this movie so much that I might have to re-watch ‘Uncut Gems’ at some point.

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
Notes: To be honest, this movie was the only one directed by Stanley Kubrick with which I didn't have much a connection. I mean, I did like it but it didn't blow me away like the rest of his movies. Fortunately, I had the opportunity to watch it again recently and, this time, I understood why it was regarded as one of his best movies. It was the only comedy made by the great master and, as expected from the best director ever, it ended up being one of the best comedies ever made. Indeed, there were so many hysterical and hilarious scenes, I couldn't pick just one. Furthermore, everybody remembers Peter Sellers who was indeed excellent but the rest of the cast was also pretty awesome (George C. Scott, Sterling Hayden, Slim Pickens). Above all, I enjoyed the fact that it was very timely, especially when it was made and it was also very smart compared to all the stupid comedies they make nowadays. For example, everything happening in the plane was really accurate and made the whole thing even more surreal. Personally, I won't give it a higher rating because I don't think it was such a masterpiece as it was quite funny but not really hilarious but it is still one of the best comedies I have seen.

An average movie

“Back in 2014, this movie made some major waves because it was making fun of North Korea and especially of its leader, Kim Jong-un. In fact, the whole thing got so out of hand that there were some threats and even some hacking going on against Sony and, as a result, they even postponed releasing the ” read more

Notes: Back in the 90’s, I was a huge fan of Woody Allen. Indeed, every year, I went to see his latest directing effort in the movie theater and I tried to watch most of his older movies as well. However, after all these years, I came to the conclusion that it's just too bad that the guy keeps making a movie every single year. Indeed, basically, it is basically impossible to produce a great picture EVERY freaking year. Instead, he basically settles with an average movie which is just very sad. However, a long time ago, at the end of the 70's, this director was pretty much on fire and he made his best movies. This flick is definitely one of them and it is a great classic. I mean, the structure is similar to his recent work (hell, he basically always uses the same structure…) but the huge difference is that he managed to create some really fascinating 3 dimensional characters and, back in those days, no one less than Allen could write such amazing and hilarious dialogues.

Notes: When you think about it, to be honest, the story was nothing really amazing but what was awesome about this movie was actually the writing. I mean, they pretty much managed to flawlessly mix a comedy with a drama and a thriller with some great dialogues and some 3 dimensional characters. As a result, the whole thing was quite spellbinding to watch, especially the 2nd half. First of all, I have to congratulate the writer-director, Martin McDonagh, who gave here a really impressive directing début and the 3 main actors (Colin Farrell, Ralph Fiennes, Brendan Gleeson) were all downright impressive. Even though Farrell got more attention, the center performance was actually provided by Brendan Gleeson who was just amazing. Like I said before, it was actually a simple story and there was no real action scene but it didn't bother me at all. Basically, it was a character-driven story and those characters were quite fascinating to watch.
