Goodbye, Children
Notes: This movie won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film festival back in those days and it definitely deserved this prize. 10 years before, Louis Malle made another movie about France during WWII called 'Lacombe Lucien'. Personally, I did prefer 'Lacombe Lucien' because it was more original, a dark really unique view of this time period in France. This movie was more a crowd pleaser but it was still really good nonetheless. Apparently, even though it wasn't really autobiographical, it was still based on Malle's youth memories. Eventually, even though the whole thing was not really original, it was a very well made drama, probably the best in its genre. Indeed, I really loved the understated directing and the children were just downright amazing. Indeed, it followed more or less the rules of the formulas (an outsider comes to a school, at first there is some apprehension but then, of course, they become friends before the ultimate separation) but the characters and the emotions displayed felt really genuine.

An average movie

“Since I did enjoy ‘The Conjuring’ franchise, I thought I might as well check this spin-off/prequel. Well, to be honest, I wasn’t really impressed by the damned thing. The first issue was that, if the Annabelle doll in ‘The Conjuring’ was a nice prop, however, that’s just what it was, a p” read more

The Lower Depths
Notes: For the last 40 years, the most illustrious French actor must have been Gérard Depardieu. Before him, also for at least 30 years, the title was probably held by Jean Gabin. Here, he worked again with Jean Renoir. Together, they made 'La Grande Illusion' which became one of the greatest classics in motion picture history. I didn’t notice before but this movie was actually an adaptation of a play written by Gorky. Anyway, they made this movie a year before 'La Grande Illusion' and even though it may not have reached the same status, it is still a very good movie. Indeed, the directing is real marvel, a combination of realism and lyricism. On the other hand, Jean Gabin was probably at the time at the height of his Art back and delivered an impressive performance. To be honest, I must admit that the whole thing might be rather depressing to watch but I didn't bother me whatsoever.

An average movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. I have to admit that I had no idea what it was about before watching the damned thing and, eventually, I really had a hard time to get into this story dealing wit” read more

Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker
Notes: It must be the ultimate making-of and it is not very often that a making-of is released as a stand-alone feature like this one (another example is ‘Lost in La Mancha’ ). Of course, ‘Apocalypse Now’ is a really impressive movie, one of the many masterpieces directed by Francis Ford Coppola in the 70’s (Man, the guy was really on fire back in those days!) and we all heard about the rumors surrounding the hellish shooting but it was just really awesome to have a full length feature telling us all the dirty and (very often) crazy details. An interesting thing about this flick is that even though the production is really messed up and, here, we are talking of a very different level of messed up, you still can get a very good movie or even a masterpiece, at least in this case. In my opinion, the best way to go is to first watch ‘Apocalypse Now’, then watch this documentary and then again ‘Apocalypse Now’ or maybe even the Redux version.
