“To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was directed by Mike Flanagan and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even though Flanagan might be one of the most interesting up-and-coming directors in the horror genre, t” read more

@Zuraka, that's actually an interesting remark.
In my opinion, the weird soundtrack (a typical Gilliam trademark) actually enhanced the sense of confusion experienced by the main character and it w

Notes: This movie is probably Terry Gilliam's most successful feature, at least financially speaking. Fortunately, it happens to be a really good movie as well. If I remember it correctly, I saw it twice when it came out and I thought the whole thing was just spellbinding. Like most of the movies dealing with time travel, many things didn't make much sense but Gilliam didn't even try to rationalize what was going on whereas lesser movies would spend a terrible amount of time trying to convince you that the whole thing was actually making any sense. Since then, I have also seen 'La Jetée', the short movie which has inspired this flick and together, they are some awesome companion pieces. It is also a proof that a remake can be really interesting when treated properly, even though I’m not sure if this movie should be called a remake since it is actually much too reducing. So, the directing was pretty impressive but the acting was really good too. Indeed, Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis both displayed that they have some range delivering some of their best performances.

Notes: This movie started out with a very typical ominous score which, for once, was not written by John Carpenter but by the great Ennio Morricone. From there, it became a chilling horror flick with some rather gruesome special effects. Even though it was actually never really scary, there were still loads of tension since you never knew for sure, except for MacReady, who could be infected or not. I also appreciated the downbeat ending with no survivors, even the last 2 guys were left alone in the snow to die without a rescue team. I was rather amazed to read that this movie was a flop and was critically panned when it was released. Anyway, nowadays, it is rightfully considered by many as the best movie directed by John Carpenter and it is another great example that you can take an old movie, give it a fresh look and modify the story to fit our modern world with some tremendous results.

Notes: It must be one of the biggest cult-classics released since the beginning of this millennium, even if some viewers really didn’t care for the damned thing at all. I have to admit it, it is actually rather difficult to discuss this movie since the whole thing is pretty weird and rather messed-up and, in fact, even Jake Gyllenhaal himself admitted that he had no idea what the movie was about. What Richard Kelly managed to do is to mix a believable teenage reality with some really dark fantasy and, somehow, even though half of the movie was almost impossible to follow, the end-result was still quite fascinating to behold which was quite an achievement. After 5 long years, as a follow-up, Richard Kelly would come up with another major mind-f*ck feature (‘Southland Tales’) but it turned out to be a massive critical failure and his career never really recovered from the blow.

Notes: Even though this movie seems to be rather forgotten nowadays, especially outside the Netherlands, I really liked it a lot and I should defnitely re-watch it at some point. Basically, this movie was the last one directed by Paul Verhoeven before he left the Netherlands and it is my favorite one from this period just behind 'Turks Fruit'. Above all, I thought that the story was just fascinating and, in my opinion, I believe it was in fact a better version of 'Basic Instinct'. Indeed, to be honest, I always had some mixed feelings about 'Basic Instinct' because, even though the set-up was great, the plot was after all really far-fetched and rather half-baked. Here, Verhoeven gave us another erotic thriller about a man falling in love with a seemingly dangerous woman but the end-result was this time much more rewarding, at least, that’s my opinion. Instead of Rutger Hauer, the lead was played this time by Jeroen Krabbbé and he gave a really solid performance. Above all, Paul Verhoeven was just at the top of his game at the time and delivered a steamy dark and spellbinding thriller.

Notes: Even though the more recent 'American Sniper' was a huge box-office success and, therefore, so far, the most popular movie about the war in Irak, in my opinion, this movie is actually the best one about this subject. In fact, back then, even though this movie was heralded by the critics, it was actually completely ignored by the audience but, somehow, almost a full year after its release, it still managed to end up winning the Best Picture Academy award. Anyway, even though I didn't care much for 'American Sniper' which was in my opinion actually seriously overrated, this movie was just really fascinating and I was on the edge of my seat during most of the duration. Indeed, I thought it was so much interesting to see a guy risking his life trying to prevent people from getting killed, including himself, instead of the usual soldiers ending killing a whole bunch of people for some usually rather dubious reasons. Furthermore, the directing was also very good and all the actors involved (especially Jeremy Renner in a star making performance) gave some really strong performances.
