Notes: What I loved the most was how it started as a really realistic look on how a TV network works and it was easily one of the best, or maybe the very best depiction of this world I have seen so far, but it became so much more. Indeed, they went so much further than that and, slowly, it became something rather insane. The chilling and at the same time fascinating thing was that all the crazy stuff while it was becoming more and more preposterous by the minute still felt possible somehow and it is considered by many as a prophetic movie. Eventually, the only thing that didn't really work for was the love story involving Diana and Max. I mean, I don't blame Faye Runaway and William Holden, they were both pretty much pitch-perfect, but it was rather unbelievable that these two characters would extend their romantic relationship beyond their first one-night stand. Basically, they got involved only so the writer could give Max a nice juicy speech towards the end. Still, the material was just so dense and fascinating, it gave an amazing reflection on how most people of my generation have grown up in front of their TV sets and how we have been shaped by this medium.4 years, 6 months ago

Notes: Before Ben Affleck surprisingly became the hottest actor-turned-director at work nowadays, it seemed at some point that George Clooney would get this prestigious title. Indeed, with this movie, he was apparenly becoming a director to reckon with in the future. Unfortunately, his follow-up would be the really underwhelming āLeatherheadsā and it has been a decade since we have been waiting for something brilliant coming from this director. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, even though I still have a preference for his debut āConfessions of a Dangerous Mindā, this follow-up was still quite impressive. Indeed, the directing was just top notch, they really managed to nail the time period and the story was quite fascinating. On top of that, David Strathairn displayed his acting talent all over the screen and itās a pity that he has done anything really amazing in the following years. Even though you might argue that the whole thing was probably not accurate, it did feel really accurate to me and, above all, I thought it was a really important story.4 years, 6 months ago

Notes: This movie is an exception. Indeed, there is a rule saying that a sequel should never be better than its predecessor but, fortunately, there are a few exceptions and this movie is one of them. Indeed, if I recall it correctly, āBefore Sunriseā was the first movie directed by Richard Linklater which I had the pleasure to watch and it was definitely a solid romantic feature. However, you could feel that Linklater was still inexperienced with the material (It was only his 4th directing effort and his first romantic outing). It was the same thing concerning Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. Their performances were pretty good and I believed in their characters but I thought that the whole thing was a little too self-conscious and pretentious. So, 10 years later, they came back with the same characters and they went back where they left it and the end-result was just quite impressive. Indeed, the director and both actors had grown older just like the characters and wrote together this impressive piece of work. Basically, just like the previous installment, there was not much action during the whole thing, just 2 characters talking to each other. It might sound dull but it was just the opposite, it was really spellbinding to watch. And this time, there were so many layers, the joy to see each other again, the bitterness about the missed opportunities, the frustration concerning their life, the love still lingering there somewhere and many more. In the first movie, it all ended in a rather melodramatic way but it fitted perfectly those characters at that moment in their life. This time, the ending was more ambiguous and, once again, an improvement. 4 years, 7 months ago

Notes: Nowadays, we donāt hear much from Michael Moore but there was some point that the guy was easily the most successful documentary maker in the world. I have always been a huge fan of his work but, at some point, his success was becoming so huge that Moore himself started to become some kind of pop-star and Iām afraid there was too much focus put on him than on his actual work. With this in mind, it was pretty cool to watch this directing debut. Indeed, back then, nobody knew who the hell was this guy and it was just really efficient and very often hilarious to see him confront some corporate figures about their wrongdoings. From the very start, Michael Moore was criticized for manipulating what was on the screen but thatās something that happens in every single documentary so it has never bothered me. The strongest message of this movie, beside the fact that it might be manipulated or not, is that even though most of these huge US corporations make some profits, they still choose to fire all this people just to make an even bigger profit which shows how our world is working nowadays. 4 years, 7 months ago

Notes: In fact, I remember very well when this movie came out. Indeed, back then, Robert De Niro and Al Pacino were still a big deal and when the word came out that they would finally star together in a movie, like any other average movie fanatic, I was just thrilled. Eventually, I even saw the damned thing in the movie theater when it was released and I was certainly not disappointed. In fact, I rewatched it many years later and I enjoyed even more as it is such a very well made and entertaining heist feature. The masterstroke with this movie was that, instead of rushing everything and focusing on the action scenes, they took their time. As a result, De Niro and Pacino, who were still at the top of their game, had enough space to develop their characters and you had the opportunity to root for both guys, the thief and the cop, which is something very rare and it was very well handled here. Concerning Michael Mann, he made recently a come-back after 6 long years with āBlackhatā but it turned out to be a massive commercial and critical failure and it seems that the guy has unfortunately lost his touch, I'm afraid. 4 years, 7 months ago

Notes: Since this movie is considered a huge classic of the French cinema, I was definitely eager to check it out. Of course, at first, this flick might seem really old, there was still a very modern feeling about it which is something always inherent to the great classics. Indeed, they are timeless and remains relevant even decades after they have been made. I'm pretty sure Steven Soderbergh saw this one before making Ocean's eleven and it must have been an inspiration. Anyway, it is definitely a great mesmerizing picture. Indeed, the directing was quite amazing and the story was completely entertaining from the beginning until the end. Personally, I always had a weak spot for heist movies, but this one is just definitely from another league than the typical Hollywood features in this genre. In 2002, they did make a decent remake with Nick Nolte, called 'The Good Thief', a remake which was directed by Neil Jordan, another fine director. Of course, the original was better but, for a remake, it was not that bad at all.4 years, 7 months ago

What is it about?
Charting the rise of the 1990's Chicago Bulls, led by Michael Jordan, one of the most notable dynasties in sports history.
My verdict:
I just loved the damned thing, in fact, it is pretty much hands-down the best thing I have seen so far this year. Indeed, like many other kids growing up in the 90's, I was fascinated by the NBA and, even though Michael Jordan was not my favorite player, the guy was amazing and so charismatic, inside and outside the basketball courts. So, to go back in such depth in his career but also on the trajectory of the Chicago Bulls, was just completely awesome and, in fact, even emotional. 4 years, 7 months ago
