Notes: For many years, Duncan Jones was mostly know as David Bowie's son with a really weird name but it seems that he has managed to find his own voice. Basically, in just two movies, he has succeeded in becoming one of the frontrunners in the Science-Fiction field. Personally, I wasn't exactly blown away by 'Source Code' but it was a really intriguing and entertaining flick but his directing debut was really impressive. I must admit it, the whole thing was rather slow and frankly quite depressing but also so fascinating. Indeed, it was visually really impressive and Sam Rockwell gave, once again, a terrific performance. It is quite incredible that this guy, after making more than 50 feature movies, still doesn't get enough regognition for his tremendous talent. The rest of the cast was just a voice-over provided by Kevin Spacey. Honestly, I thought this GERTY would turn out to be, at some point, some kind of HAL 9000 but even though he/it had a really chilly voice, he wasn't really a threat and, eventually, didn't do much. Maybe they could have developped the robot who was supposed to follow the orders but decided to make his own decisions but it was never clear what did actually motivate his actions. Notes: To be honest, it has been ages since I saw this movie and I should definitely re-watch at some point. I have to admit that except for ‘Blowup, I didn’t care so much for the movies I have seen directed by Michelangelo Antonioni but there is no denying that, in the 60's, he was a major movie director and this movie was one of the many masterpieces he made back in those days. Jeanne Moreau and Marcello Mastroianni were both really strong here as they delivered some great perfomances. Above all, I thought it was a very deep movie which didn't deal with some chases, shootings, explosions and special effects but with relationships and the human mind in general.4 years, 8 months ago

Note : Even though this movie seems to be nowadays pretty much forgotten, I remembered very well when it was released in France. Indeed, in my my home country, it was a massive critical success (it even won the César of the Best French Film of the year) and there was a huge hype around the whole thing. Well, I have to admit that I didn't remember anything about this movie but, eventually, after a re-watch, I was so impressed by the damned thing, provably even more than the first time around. Indeed, when I first watched it, I was actually around the same age as the characters involved and, even if I did appreciate it at the time, I'm afraid it was too subtle for me. However, to watch it again almost 30 years later was actually quite emotional and even overwhelming. Indeed, I think it's a movie for a mature audience but, for me, it was also a whole word of recognition. Sure, I was born in the 80's but I was also born in a very small village in the French countryside and the everyday life and mood still looked quite similar. Furthermore, this time, I could really identify with this group of teenagers and with the complex feelings they struggled with. Indeed, André Téchiné managed to create a fascinating mood and those characters were all really 3 dimensional and felt so genuine.4 years, 8 months ago

Notes: It turned out to be a really weird and messed up documentary, that’s for sure. First of all, I have to confess, I wasn’t really aware of all the horrors that happened in Indonesia about 50 years ago and only therefore it was already a really valuable feature (as a result, Indonesia is another country I won’t be visiting for ‘fun’). Anyway, not only this movie deals with a massively traumatic experience but it deals with it in such a unique way, as a result, the whole thing was just as much fascinating as it was horrifying. Indeed, even though you might expect these executioners to regret their actions, most of them didn’t feel much guilt, in the contrary, they were actually proud of what they did and, as a result, this movie was more about the psychological impact then putting actual blame on people. I mean, if you see ‘Shoa’, everyone, even the former SS, agree that what happened in WWII was horrible but, then, Germany lost the war. In Indonesia, the same people who ordered the purge still have the power and, therefore, after so many decades, those ‘winners’ have been telling anyone that what they happened was actually justified creating this weird acceptation of a major human tragedy. And yet, when you get to see Anwar Congo, right from the beginning, you wonder if he really believes everything he says and, indeed, slowly, after reproducing these terribly deeds, his attitude changes and, towards the end, he seems to be finally devastated by what he has done.4 years, 8 months ago

Notes: To be honest, it took me a while to get into this movie. Indeed, I was at first slightly annoyed by this intellectual bourgeois family with their gorgeous house in Italy and, when Armie Hammer (basically your typical Greek god) showed up, I started to wonder if the damned would actually work for me. However, the whole thing was pretty slow and it really took its time but, eventually, it slowly won me over. Indeed, thanks to the slow pace, you really get the chance to follow Elio in his journey experiencing his first love and this journey was quite fascinating. Seriously, it is not very often that you get to see such a perfect depiction of the burgeoning of love and it has been a while since I have seen such a convincing love story. Concerning Timothée Chalamet, I kept hearing some great things about this guy and now I understand why he is considered as one of the most promising actors of his generation. Concerning Armie Hammer, ever since his breakthrough with ‘The Social Network’, the guy had been rather struggling but, with this flick, he made an impressive come-back.4 years, 8 months ago
