Sin City
Notes: In 2014, after 9 long years, they finally came up with a sequel but, unfortunately, it seemed that nobody cared anymore and it was eventually a flop (and indeed, the damned thing turned out be just terribly underwhelming). Anyway, when this first instalment came out, it had quite an impact and it became right away a cult-classic. At the time, I got pretty lucky as I managed to see it in the movie theater when it was released and I was seriously quite blown away by the damned thing. By now, I have seen all the movies directed by Robert Rodriguez and, in my opinion, it is easily his best movie. In fact, I would go as far as saying that it is definitely one of the best comic book adaptations. Since then, I have actually bought the original Sin City comic books, those are great as well and I can tell you that this movie was a very faithful adaptation, probably the most faithful adaptation of a comic-book that I have seen so far. Of course, the story was rather preposterous but, for once, it didn't bother me, in the contrary.

A good movie

“Since I have always been a fan of James Brown, I was quite eager to check this flick. As a matter of fact, one of the very first CD's I bought as a kid was a James Brown CD (to be honest, I don't have it anymore and, nowadays, I don't have anything from this artist which is quite a shame). Anyway, c” read more

There Will Be Blood
Notes: 2007 was an exceptional year for the movies and many would argue that it was even one of the best years ever. Eventually, two contenders rose above the rest, this movie and 'No Country for old men'. Eventually, 'No Country for old men' got slightly more credit but, personally, I preferred this amazing flick. In my opinion, 'No Country...' was a fine picture but this flick went way deeper and was more fascinating in my opinion. Anyway, Paul Thomas Anderson showed us again that he is one of the most inspired directors at work right now. Working with one of the best actors ever, Daniel Day-Lewis, they created a great masterpiece together. Day-Lewis provided one hell of a one-man show being in almost every single scene for almost 3 hours long (however, the young Paul Dano shouldn't be forgotten as he gave an impressive performance as well). Furthermore, The story was really mesmerizing, probably the best one tackled by Paul-Thomas Anderson so far.

La Strada (1954)
Notes: I have seen this movie a very long time ago but I was very impressed and I never have forgot it. To be honest, even though I have watched many other movies directed by Fellini, very often, it didn’t really connect with them, even some massive classics like ‘La Dolce Vita’ and ‘8 ½’. I mean, I did like them and I could see why they were considered masterpieces but they simply didn’t really blow me away. This movie is an exception though and it remains my favorite one among his work. Indeed, with this movie, you still have the poetic side of Fellini but this feature is also pretty realistic and I just loved this combination. In 2013, I went to see it again in the theater with some uncles and aunts who have formed a film club and I had a wonderful time. Unfortunately, I had a bad night sleep the night before and I could barely stay awake ruding the last 30 minutes but still what a great picture. This time, I was above all impressed by Giulietta Masina. I mean, Anthony Quinn was really good as well but Masina really stole the show portraying some kind of female Charles Chaplin character.

An average movie

“To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak for Steve McQueen and since I’m from Le Mans, I was quite eager to check it out. First of all, I was wondering how they would develop a plot around the legendary race and, to my surprise, they didn’t even” read more

Turkish Delight (1973)
Notes: If you are ever interested in Dutch movies, you must see this flick. It is the masterpiece that influenced every single Dutch movies that came afterwards. I mean, in spite of its highly sexual content, it was in 1973 the most successful Dutch film ever made and it's still the most attended Dutch film in the Netherlands, almost 40 years later! So, it is huge, the best movie ever made by Paul Verhoeven and I really loved it. Indeed, in my opinion, it is one of the best love stories I have ever seen. There is a one of a kind chemistry between Rutger Hauer and Monique van de Ven and they both gave some tremendous performances. Even though I'm usually not fond of randomness, I thought it was amazing how some small little events would happen on almost every single scene. It kept the whole thing so pure, fresh and much more spellbinding than any romantic feature you will see coming from Hollywood. The lovers basically do everything together, they make love like beasts, they fight, they laugh, they throw stuff at each other, they even have a car crash together on their first meeting, even when they are separated, they are still crazy about each other and, for the viewers, they are completely spellbinding to watch. Some people in the Netherlands argue that this movie is now old and has lost its edge but I completely disagree. 40 years later, it is still a massive piece of work and Dutch cinema is still waiting for something that good to come along

Notes: Honestly, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and I should definitely re-watch it at some point whenever I get the opportunity. The point is that this flick is just a massive masterpiece and it really blew me away the first time I saw it. Basically, in my opinion, it is the ultimate psychopath movie and during the last 90 years, they have tried to improve the formula but they never improved on the blue print developped in this feature. The funny thing is that I have always been a little bit dismissive towards the serial killer sub-genre. Indeed, most of them, even such massive classics like ‘The Silence of The Lambs’ and ‘Seven’, are so far-fetched, so over the top, I always have a hard time to really connect with them. This one is different though. Indeed, there are no chases, no shootings, no explosions like you see in your typical US thriller. What you have instead is just a frightening and fascinating psychological study of a sick mind and I thought it was much more interesting to behold.

An average movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I always had a weak spot for Natalie Portman, I thought I might as well check her directing debut. Well, even if it was quite ambitious and quite courageous to deliver a movie spoken only in Hebrew, to be honest, the damned thing was no” read more

Psycho
Notes: It is already more than 50 years old but it is still one of the best thrillers ever made. Whereas some older horror/thriller flicks tend to get a little bit cheesy and outdated when you see them so many years later, this one still looks modern and the structure is still stricking even for nowadays standards (Indeed, at first, the focus is set on Janet Leigh but she is in fact killed really early in the movie). The whole thing was so unexpected, it was just pure genius and the fact that it hasn't been more copied later on is because most of the directors don't have the balls to try such a daring move. I can imagine how the audience must have been shocked at the time, it must have been awesome to witness it first hand. Furthermore, it is still pretty creepy and Anthony Perkins gave one of the best performances in motion picture history. Indeed, he managed to create such a fascinating character, at the same time, rather sweet and even charismatic but also awkward and antisocial. When I check Hitchock's filmography, I think I still prefer 'Vertigo' even more but this flick is probably a closed second.

Eyes Wide Shut
Notes: This was the last movie directed by Stanley Kubrick and, eventually, not everyone was sold when it was released. Indeed, many people thought it was in fact one of his least successful features but I personally think it was actually another great movie from the best director that ever lived. It is such a shame that it took him 12 years to finally make another movie and it is even worse that nothing more will come out from this genius. Anyway, I remember it very well, when it came out, there was a huge buzz about the damned thing and I had the pleasure to behold this masterpiece in the movie theater. As usual, you had the incredible Kubrick directing, completely flawless with his usual obsessive attention to every single detail. On the other hand, you had this fascinating story which was almost a captivating Hollywood thriller. I say "almost" because at the end, there was no big chase, rooftop final battle or a big twist explaining everything that happened before. There was actually no real answer and I think that's the reason why many people got frustrated by the damned thing, this fact that they are so used to that everything is supposed to be solved at the end (at least, that's what the average viewer expects).
