A classic

“I already saw this movie but since it was ages ago and since it was available on Disney+, I was really eager to check it out again. Well, even though it is definitely a classic, in this genre, I think that 'Sleeping Beauty' is actually vastly superior. Indeed, even though the animation was fine here” read more

Notes: I remember very well the first time I saw this movie. Indeed, I had actually never heard of it but since it was directed by Alfred Hitchcock, I thought I should give it a try. Back then, I was quite blown away by the whole thing and I kept thinking about it through the years and more than 10 years later, I thought it was really time for a re-watch. Well, this time again, I was really impressed. Indeed, I would go as far as saying that it is definitely one of the best movies directed by the great master. Personally, I always had a weak spot for movies with a simple set-up, you know, just one location, usually a house or an apartment, a handful of characters and a very smart plot. It is pretty straightforward but spellbinding when done properly. In this genre, it might be the best one I have ever seen and I thought it was just amazing. Basically, the two main characters are not likeable whatsoever (something terribly refreshing and fascinating) and even though you are not rooting for them, you wonder if they are going to pull it off resulting in some nail biting suspense.

A good movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but it seemed to be interesting and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. First of all, I have to admit that, before watching this documentary, I had actually never heard of Estevan Oriol or Mark Machado A.K.A” read more

A bad movie

“Even though this movie had been really poorly received, since I have always had a weak spot for Brian De Palma, I thought I might as well check it out, especially since it was available on Netflix. Well, it turned out to be really terrible and, if De Palma always did have some ups and downs during h” read more

Notes: If Brian De Palma always did have some ups and downs during his prolific career, this was probably his lowest point so far, I’m afraid. Seriously, pretty much nothing worked in this flick. The first thing that bothered me was the music. Indeed, not only it was completely generic, but it was also omnipresent, and, above all, it almost never matched the scene that was taking place. Then, if the cast seemed interesting enough, they all gave some rather weak performances, especially Carice van Houten who was pretty pathetic but, on the other hand, she wasn’t helped with this material. However, eventually, the biggest issue was with the story though. Indeed, even though it was again pretty generic, it still managed to be quite confusing and the end-result was just a boring mess. I mean, it was apparently supposed to be some kind of international spy thriller dealing with terrorism with several international locations but , while it might sound ambitious, it was never convincing, interesting or entertaining whatsoever. It’s such a pity that Brian De Palma could deliver such a weak movie in this genre when the guy actually used to be a thriller master back in the 80’s and 90’s.

An average movie

“To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much from this flick but since I have always been a huge fan of Lisbeth Salander, I still wanted to check it out. Well, even though this character still has some huge potential, I’m afraid the damned thing was rather misguided. Indeed, even though for many years,” read more

Notes: I wasn’t sure what to expect from this movie but since it has a solid reputation, I was quite eager to check it out. Eventually, I have to admit that I was quite blown away by the damned thing. Seriously, I had never seen anything like this before and, while watching this movie, I was really wondering why they never made more movies about this subject. The problem, if they would make a similar movie nowadays, if it would be fake, it wouldn’t really work but, if it would be for real, then most people would be probably outraged by the damned thing. Basically, this movie was made more than 80 years ago, when the movie technics were maybe not as elaborate as they are today but, on the other hand, there were no real ‘rules’ or actual censorship so the movie makers could still make pretty much whatever they wanted and get away with anything without much trouble. Coming back to our main feature, after all these years, it is still a really weird movie but, somehow, I think its 'weirdness' was actually positive, in spite of its controversial subject.
