Johnny Got His Gun

The Maltese Falcon (1941)
Notes: To be honest, the circumstances I watched the damned thing were far from being ideal (I was really tired and the recording was seriously messed up). On top of that, this movie has the disadvantage of being already 80 years old and, by that time, I had already watched many other film noirs with or without Humphrey Bogart so I wasn’t completely blown away by the whole thing. Furthermore, it is always the same issue with this genre, the plot is terribly murky and, in fact, it never really matters which is always something that bother me a little. And, yet, it is still an awesome flick though. Indeed, it is historically quite priceless as it started the directing career of John Huston, the career of Humphrey Bogart and it pretty much launched the genre at the time. Indeed, even though Sam Spade might be the main character, he is not actually a hero, he is definitely not a nice guy and he pretty much dumps the female lead at the end without shedding a single tear. That’s the difficult thing with this flick, I have been accustomed with this archetype from the movies that came afterwards and while watching this movie, it is almost impossible to handle it as something new. Still, it is a huge classic.

An average movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since I did like ‘The Conjuring’ franchise, I thought I might as well check this spin-off/prequel. Last week, I actually saw ‘Annabelle’, the first spin-off based on ‘The Conjuring’ and, to be honest, I had a really hard time to ” read more

A good movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. First to all, I have to admit that I have never read ‘Infinite Jest’ and, to be honest, it felt rather weird to watch a movie about a writer without actually ” read more

Sunset Boulevard
Notes: It is a classic which definitely lives up to its strong reputation. Indeed, the directing by Billy Wilder was pretty impressive but Gloria Swanson was the one who really stole the show with her amazing performance. It was quite amazing that even though some scenes in this movie were rather over the top, this movie was still well nuanced and subtle. Personally, I have not always been a huge fan of Billy Wilder’s work, especially his comedies like ‘Sabrina’, ‘Some Like It Hot’ or ‘The Apartment’, but here, he delivered a really dark tale and it was just spellbinding to behold. You can say whatever you want about Hollywood but, from time to time, they do allow a great director to go really dark and, in this case, the end-result was just quite amazing. On top of that, this movie works on so many levels, it tells a story about the characters, about the actors involved, about Hollywood in general and it goes on and on.

An average movie

“Since I have seen all the 'Rocky' movies, even the recent 'Creed' installments, I was quite eager to see this movie focusing on Chuck Wepner, the guy who was actually the inspiration for Rocky Balboa. Well, eventually, to be honest, it turned out to be a decent watch but not much more than that, I'm” read more

An average movie

“Even though it was a movie I wanted to watch for quite some time, to be honest, I can't really remember why I wanted to watch it in the first place. Well, after watching the damned thing, I'm still wondering. Anyway, like many other music artists before and after them, Outkast decided to make a movi” read more

Goodbye, Children
Notes: This movie won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film festival back in those days and it definitely deserved this prize. 10 years before, Louis Malle made another movie about France during WWII called 'Lacombe Lucien'. Personally, I did prefer 'Lacombe Lucien' because it was more original, a dark really unique view of this time period in France. This movie was more a crowd pleaser but it was still really good nonetheless. Apparently, even though it wasn't really autobiographical, it was still based on Malle's youth memories. Eventually, even though the whole thing was not really original, it was a very well made drama, probably the best in its genre. Indeed, I really loved the understated directing and the children were just downright amazing. Indeed, it followed more or less the rules of the formulas (an outsider comes to a school, at first there is some apprehension but then, of course, they become friends before the ultimate separation) but the characters and the emotions displayed felt really genuine.
