The Class
Notes: Since this movie won the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival, I was really eager to check it out. Actually, for the French cinema, this victory was quite a milestone since it was the 1st time in 20 years that a French movie won this prestigious prize. Eventually, I thought the whole thing was quite impressive. Indeed, by now, I have seen a few Hollywood movies dealing with the same subject, the relationship between teachers and students, and even though some of them might have been entertaining, absolutely none of them was actually really convincing. Well, this movie was completely the opposite. Indeed, it was just so really raw and realistic, it felt pretty much like a documentary even if you know you're actually watching a fiction. Another thing I enjoyed about this movie was the fact that there was no annoying and unnecessary sub-plots. Instead, it was completely focused and rather spellbinding to behold. Thanks to his movie, you can feel that being a teacher is probably the most important job in the world and probably one of the most difficult one as well.

An Angel at My Table
Notes: Recently, I watched ‘Top of the Lake’ with my wife and even though it wasn’t really flawless, there was something quite spellbinding about this TV-show and it was a great reminder of why Jane Campion is (or at least used to be) one of the most interesting directors in the world. First of all, even though it was a critical success, I actually had a hard time to care for ‘Sweetie’, Campion’ s directing debut. However, this 2nd directing effort was just mind-blowing. I have to admit that I never heard of Janet Frame before watching this movie but, apparently, it was the case for most of the viewers. Anyway, I thought it was a really fascinating and heartbreaking story. Indeed, I have always been interested in movies dealing with mental illness and this movie must be one of the best I have seen about this subject. By the way, what happened to Kerry Fox? After this movie, she would show up in ‘Shallow Grave’ and ‘Intimacy’ but the rest of her career would have been filled with some rather obscure features.

An average movie

“To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was starring Vanessa Hudgens, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even though this movie apparently didn’t get much love when it was released, I have to admit that I was actually quite impressed by Hudgens w” read more

A good movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, first of all, concerning the tone, they went for something slightly whimsical and realistic at the same time which can be tricky but it did work in this cas” read more

Diabolique
Notes: I was really impressed by the damned thing and I think it completely deserves its stellar reputation. Apparently, back in those days, the biggest rival to Alfred Hitchcock was the French director, Henri-George Clouzot. They were actually both competing to make this movie but, eventually, Clouzot was the one who had the honor to adapt this best-seller and he did it with great success as it became an instant classic. Indeed, some older movies didn’t grow old very well but this one is still pretty damned amazing, even after all these years. Basically, the directing was quite amazing and provided a mesmerizing eerie atmosphere. The cast included one of the biggest French stars Simone Signoret and also Vérat Clouzot and they both gave some impressive performances. In my opinion, this movie is the perfect example that you don't need any shootings, explosions or chases to make a fascinating thriller. The characters, the dialogues, the shots build up the tensions, that's it and that's more than enough.

Incendies
Notes: Basically, it is a really slow burning drama but it was very effective and the ending was just heart-breaking. Still, I thought it was a little bit frustrating that they never named in which country the whole thing took place and it bugged me so much, I had to stop half way through it to look it up on the internet. And, indeed, it takes place in an unnamed Middle-Eastern country based on Lebanon. There were also some refugees whose nationality was never specified. Even though I consider myself an history buff, I was sometimes confused, and if you don’t have any knowledge of this region history, I’m pretty sure you’ll be confused as well. Anyway, it didn’t change the fact that it was a fascinating drama with some shades of thriller elements. The cast was also really good and, like I said before, the ending was completely heartbreaking hitting me like a truck on full speed. Usually, I’m annoyed to death by the typical twist ending provided by your average Hollywood thriller. It is a useless gimmick but, in this movie, it was really good and appropriate. Even the random chronology which is so much overused nowadays worked really well here. This movie was also a terrible reminder of all the atrocities which have been taken place in the last 50 years in the Middle East.

A good movie

“To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but it was pretty late and I wanted to watch something short to make sure I didn’t go to bed terribly late. On top of that, I always had a weak spot for Jerry Seinfeld so I thought I might as well check it out. Well, first of all,” read more

Notes: I wasn't disappointed and it turned out to be easily the smartest movie released in 2014. Indeed, even though it was visually quite appealing, it was above all the fascinating ideas developed in this picture that really appealed to me. As a matter of fact, just a few weeks ago, I saw a talk show on TV where they were saying that, indeed, some big companies like Google are currently investigating on AI and we should expect some major breakthrough in this area in the near future. In this movie, you could see already the issues we would have to face if we would come up with a very intelligent AI. For example, how could we know what an AI is actually exactly thinking? What would be its purpose in life, a concept we humans are constantly struggling with? And most important, what would be then our purpose?
