Boyhood
Notes: I actually already heard about this movie 6 or 8 before it was released and, of course, I was really intrigued by this concept but, to be honest, I didn’t expect it to be so amazing. I mean, sure, it is a very nice gimmick (shooting a movie over a period of 12 years starting with a boy at 6 years old until he reaches 18 years old) but a gimmick remains a gimmick unless you manage to do something great with it. Well, Richard Linklater certainly did something quite amazing here. Indeed, a traditional movie would give you a nice story, a great story if you’re lucky, but here they gave us a genuine slice of life. Of course, you could argue that they could have shot a documentary and you would have ended up with the same results but I highly doubt it. Indeed, for almost 3 hours, you spend more than a decade with these characters and even though nothing hugely dramatic happens, the whole thing was just spellbinding to behold.

Z (1969)
Notes: It is simply an amazing political thriller, easily one of the best I have ever seen. To be honest, it is rather slow paced but the directing was nothing short of amazing. Personally, I always dread it when US thrillers tend to loose focus and throw some random and tedious action scenes but it never happened here. Costa-Gavras keeps instead a realistic approach, almost clinical, and the thing was so sharp, there was not even room for any sub-plots or romantic angles. The only thing which could resemble a romantic angle was the wife mourning her dead husband but even this was quite realistic. Still, the whole process remained fascinating, it played like a spellbinding thriller and it was quite chilling to discover that basically the very same events actually took place in Greece just a few years before this movie was released. Eventually, towards the end, when you think that, surprisingly, everything will end well, that justice will prevail, there is this shattering epilogue making the whole message even more resounding. Not only it is an entertaining feature but it is actually one of very few movies which are important historically and you ought to yourself to check it out.

A classic

“I already saw this movie but, the first time, it was on the BBC so I was quite eager to watch it again but with some subtitles this time around. Well, I’m really glad I did because I enjoyed it even more. I guess the first time I watched it, I focused too much on the story which is, to be honest, ” read more

An average movie

“To be honest, I wasn’t exactly a huge fan of ‘Altered Carbon’, it was a decent TV-show but not much more than that. However, after a watching the trailer for this anime, I thought I might as well check it out since it was available on Netflix. Well, the main reason I wanted to check the damned” read more

Notes: Though it is not my Pixar favorite, it is still a great picture. In my opinion, it is, in fact, the last great picture made by Pixar. I mean, I hope they will make more masterpieces in the future but their more recent features were rather disappointing. Not this one though. First of all, you have this monster of an introduction. Indeed, the first ten minutes are among the most mind-blowing animated moments I have ever experienced in my life. This heartbreaking introduction was actually the best part in this feature. So daring, so emotional, only Pixar could pull something like that. After that, I have to admit it, the movie has a hard time trying to live up to this heartbreaking start-up and it was pretty tricky to start up with the very best they had to offer but, still, I think it was really impressive. Of course, the animation was just gorgeous but, above all, it is really amazing how they managed to create such a touching and entertaining story starring a grumpy old guy, a fat Asian kid, a talking dog and a weird bird. No offense but I'm still waiting from something that good coming from Dreamworks.

Wu-Tang: An American Saga
What is it about? The show tracks the Wu Tang Clan's formation, a vision of Bobby Diggs, who strives to unite a dozen young, black men that are torn between music and crime but eventually rise to become the unlikeliest of American success stories. My verdict: Even though this show is not really famous, it did sound really intriguing (I have always been fascinated by the Wu Tang Clan), so I was really eager to check it out. Well, I wasn’t disappointed and it is in my opinion easily the best hip-hop biopic out there, no less than that. It did help that they didn’t have to stick to a full-length feature format and, this way, they could take their time to develop the various story-lines. For some reasons, it did also remind me of ‘The Wire’ in the sense that both TV-shows went for a grim realistic approach removing a lot of bullsh*t and stereotypes involved in their respective genres. Will I watch the following seasons? Yeah, by now, I have seen all 3 seasons.

Dark City
Notes: I remember it very well, when this movie was released, there was not so much buzz about it but I still ended up watching it with my two of my buddies in the theater. To be honest, we were completely stoned when we went to watch it and the only thing I could remember was that my friends were constantly fidgeting and fighting on their chairs and I think the movie was pretty weird but I sure didn't have a clue what was going on. Anyway, a few years later, I watched it again, sober this time, and, this time around, it completely floored me. Indeed, even though 'The Crow', Alex Proyas' previous directing effort, was pretty good and had received some pretty good reviews, his follow-up feature was miles better in my opinion. Indeed, it had some great visuals and a fascinating story. Back then, everybody saw and talked about 'The Matrix' and most of us missed this gem. In my opinion, this movie is in fact much better than 'The Matrix' and fortunately, it has now a deserved cult following. Afterwards, Alex Proyas did get involved in some interesting projects later on in his career but, unfortunately, none of them reached the level of this movie.

A good movie

“Since I kept hearing some pretty good things about this flick and since it was available on Netflix, I was quite eager to check it out.
