Notes: By now, I have seen all the movies directed by Hayao Miyazaki and, after watching his flicks, I must admit it, most of them didn’t really blow me away. I mean, they were all pretty good, the hand-drawn animation displayed was nothing short of marvelous but, to be honest, I always have a hard time to get into his stories. Still, there was one major exception though and it was this masterpiece which I just really loved. Indeed, I have all respect for the Disney animated features and they definitely made some great pictures but, in my opinion, Hayao Miyazaki displayed here so much more imagination and this feature was just so much more spellbinding. Once again, it was visually amazing but, for once, the story was just so fascinating. Indeed, not only did Miyazaki deliver a fascinating world but also he gave us a dark and thrilling tale with some quiet moments and some frenetic action. Furthermore, the pacing which be can challenging in most of Ghibli productions was just flawless here. Another major improvement was that the main character was quite complex and I really cared about what she was going through. It is interesting to note that my wife thought it would be too dark for my kids but I still made all my children watched this flick when they were very young and they were all mesmerized.4 years, 10 months ago

Notes: You can say whatever you want about Francis Ford Coppola but the guy completely ruled the 70’s. I mean, he already managed to deliver 2 of the best movies ever made but, apparently, it wasn’t enough and he ended up the decade with yet another masterpiece. Eventually, what I find really difficult with this movie, is to judge it as it is without thinking about how messed up the production was. Indeed, the behind-scenes details have become pretty much as famous as the movie itself but we shouldn’t forget that this flick was on its own quite brilliant already. Through the years, the Vietnam war has been a big source of inspiration for the American directors and, in this genre, it must be one of the best. To be honest, it is not the easiest film to digest but, after multiple re-watches, there are still many things to get from it. Eventually, for Coppola, who spent 16 gruling months shooting this flick, spending pretty much all his money, losing about 45 kilos while filming, even threatening to kill himself several times during the making of this film, it seems that the film permanently burned him creatively and he never managed to make again something so amazing during the next 40 years.4 years, 10 months ago

Notes: By now, I have seen all the movies directed by Hayao Miyazaki and, after watching his flicks, I must admit it, most of them didn’t really blow me away. Notes: Nowadays, we don’t hear much from Michael Moore but there was a time when the guy was the most successful documentary maker in the world. Basically, it is with this movie that he got his breakthrough and, even though I always enjoyed his work, this movie was much better than anything he has ever done before or after his career. Indeed, the whole thing was just fascinating to behold and I would go as far as saying that it is pretty much my favorite documentary. I mean, sure, I’m well aware of the fact that Michael Moore has been accused of being dishonest and of manulating his material and, obviously, the whole thing was seriously biased but it didn't matter to me. So many years later, we still hear on a regular basis such horrible stories coming from the USA and, for most of the Europeans like me, it is rather difficult to understand why they are still attached to their antic gun laws after so many lives have been lost so pointlessly. Anyway, in my opinion, this movie is at the same time entertaining, moving and educating.4 years, 10 months ago

Notes: At some point, I had finally seen the other movies in Chan-wook Park’s ‘Revenge Trilogy’ and, to be honest, I was slightly disappointed by ‘Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance’ and even more by ‘Lady Vengeance’. Indeed, I was expecting a lot from these flicks because I was so blown away by ‘Oldboy’ which was the 2nd instalment in this trilogy. I remember it very well, when it was released, it was critically heralded, especially at the Cannes Film Festival and after hearing so many good things about it, I was really eager to check it out. Eventually, I thought it was quite amazing and definitely one of the best thrillers I have ever seen. Personally, I usually don't like twists but the one developed in this movie didn't bother me at all, in the contrary. The reason why was that the story, the directing, the acting, everything was just spot on and the damned thing was just fascinating to behold. From that point, Chan-Wook Park had quite a successful international career and I especially enjoyed 'Ah-ga-ssi'.4 years, 10 months ago
