A good movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this movie since I have a weak spot for Fernando Meirelles’s work and since it was available on Netflix, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, I really liked the damned thing and it has been a while since Meirelles had released such an enjoyable movie.” read more

Magnolia (1999)
Notes: Even though ‘Boogie Nights’ had made quite an impression at the time, it was with his 3rd directing effort that Paul Thomas Anderson really made his breakthrough. Personally, I think he is one of the best directors at work nowadays and this might be his best movie so far but I would have to rewatch ‘There Will Be Blood ’ to make up my mind for good. Basically, ‘There Will Be Blood’ is indeed a great flick but it mostly deals only with one character whereas this movie deals with a whole bunch of people played by an impressive cast. This movie was also responsible of making the hyperlink gimmick so popular (several loose story lines are intertwined and usually ends up together) and it must be the best movie in this genre. As a result, it displays some really interesting characters and stories, some strong directing and all the actors involved gave some very good performances. Indeed, even though Tom Cruise might have seemed to be insane, he definitely can act and when he leaves his comfort zone, he can be actually pretty amazing.

Requiem for a Dream
Notes: In fact, I actually saw the damned thing when it was released and, ever since then, Darren Aronofsky has always been one of the most intriguing directors at work. During this period, most of his movies have been critically heralded but this sophomore effort remains his best movie in my opinion. Above all, the directing was top-notch and, after rewatching this flick, I was surprised to discover that it was actually pretty much a psychological horror flick with a very ominous beginning and such a relentless and hardcore ending. For all the actors involved (Ellen Burstyn, Jared Leto, Jennifer Connelly, Marlon Wayans), it was basically the highest point of their career and they have never been better than in this flick. Hell, who would have thought that Marlon Wayans, of all people, could deliver such an impressive performance?!? Visually, it was just really impressive and, even though the video-clip esthetics might be deemed superficial, I think it was a great way to show the heightened feeling or vision of someone being under the influence of drugs.

A Streetcar Named Desire
Notes: To be honest, it has been ages since I have seen this flick and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. In fact, if I recall it correctly, I actually read this play when I was studying English in college. Anyway, it is such a fascinating tale and a major milestone in motion picture history. Indeed, not only Marlon Brando, probably one of the best actors that ever lived, got his breakthrough with this movie, but it was also the birth of a new acting method or, at least, it was with this movie that the mainstream audience first became acquainted with such a realistic acting style, a style which still inspires actors nowadays. Concerning the story, it is actually pretty basic and yet so spellbinding. Indeed, it deals with some average people but, like any average people, these characters were in fact seriously twisted and actually pretty messed up. As a result, it was some pretty dark stuff but the whole thing was actually quite relatable and I’m pretty sure I would enjoy it even more now since I’m older.

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Atom Egoyan’s work, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, it is usually considered as a low point in Egoyan’s career and, unfortunately, I’m afraid I will have to agree on this. Seriously, it has bee” read more

A good movie

“To be honest, when I heard they were coming up with a 4th version of this story, I can’t say I was really excited by this idea. However, since it had been very well received, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, I was still not blown away by the story. Indeed, it was still rather generic ” read more

City of God (2002)
Notes: Honestly, I was just completely blown away and I would go as far as saying that it is one of the best movies I have ever seen. First of all, the way it was shot was really impressive. Indeed, this movie is really stylized but also quite realistic at the same time which is something rather unique, it has some complex shots and nice visuals but it remains raw at the core. But it is not one of those movies with some nice visuals but rather tedious, no, here, the story keeps you on the edge from the beginning until the very end and it was just quite fascinating. I thought that the characters were all intriguing, even the smaller ones, and even though there were many characters, it was so well written that you could easily follow what was going on and who’s who and who was doing what. How they managed to make such an entertaining and insightful movie in one of the most dangerous places on earth is quite a marvel and a mystery to me.

Silver Linings Playbook
Notes: In my opinion, his movie was just really amazing. I even shed a few tears, something that never happened to me before. First of all, the characters and the whole story really touched me personally as I was reminded of how I met my wife and why we ended up together in the first place. Finally, it was just a terrific movie with some real characters, with some real issues, dealing with their emotions and making me laugh and cry. I was also impressed by Bradley Cooper. Man, this guy seems to be the real deal. Indeed, only a few years back, he got his breakthrough with 'The Hangover' as a supposedly funny guy, then he became quickly another pretty face but, now, he is profiling himself as a genuinely talented dramatic actor. Concerning Jennifer Lawrence who actually won the Academy award for this performance, I'm not so sure. To be honest, in my opinion, she was actually too young for this part but she was solid and she definitely had some strong chemisty with Cooper. Eventually, I just loved this flick, it is basically an awesome drama and a great romantic-comedy.

“Since I have seen all the other movies directed by Gore Verbinski, I thought I might as well check his last directing effort. Well, from an aesthetic point of view, it was probably Verbinski’s most beautiful movie to look at with some really intriguing scenes and awesome camera set-up. Unfortunate” read more

The Handmaid
What is it about? A religion-based autocracy has taken over most of the United States, renaming the country Gilead. In this country women are second-class citizens. Anyone trying to escape is punished. One such person is June, who is captured while trying to escape with her husband and child and is sentenced to be a handmaid, bearing children for childless government officials. As a handmaid, June is renamed Offred. This is her story. My verdict: Well, even I really liked it and understand why it has been so much heralded, to be honest, it didn't become one of my favorites. Basically, the concept was really intriguing, Elisabeth Moss is definitely one of the best actresses of her generation and she is always spellbinding to watch in this show. And, yet, there are a couple of things that bothered me. Above all, they are constantly switching the behaviour and personalities of the characters depending of the needs of the plot. For example, June is/was supposed to be an average ordinary woman which made her ordeal even more relatable and horrifying but that already created an issue. Indeed, if she was seemingly so helpless, how was she suppose to achieve her goals like saving her little girl? As a result, time and time again, they turn her into some kind of super woman or, even worse, someone would suddenly show up and provide exactly what she needs at the right moment even if it vastly contradicted what this character had been doing so far. And yet, even if it is flawed, it is usually seriously entertaining though. Will I watch the following seasons? I hope they won’t stretch it forever but I will definitely check the other seasons.

Hated: GG Allin the Murder Junkies
What was it about? Documentary about the life and death of the notorious underground punk icon GG Allin, the foul mouthed, heroin shooting lead singer of the Murder Junkies, who would throw excrement at the crowd, start fights with the biggest guys in the audience, and threatened to kill himself onstage. He was considered the lowest common denominator of our society by some, an avant-garde artist by others. My two cents: When I heard about this movie, it sounded really interesting so I was quite eager to check it out. The fact that it was Todd Phillips's directing debut and the fact that it was miles away from his usual raunchy comedies made the damned thing even more intriguing to me. Well, even though GG Allin had quite a notorious reputation, I was expecting him to be a grotesque and pathetic guy ready to do any stunts just to get some attention but I thought he was actually quite charismatic and, in my opinion, he was a real and genuine punk rocker. I have to admit that I never really cared much about real Punk from a musical point of view but I always admired the attitude and way of thinking of Punk fans. The other advantage of watching this movie was that you could experience his live shows without actually being physically present because I don't think I would have dared to go to one of his concerts as the outcome was always so unpredictable and seriously hazardous.
