Notes: Basically, it is yet another masterpiece directed by Roman Polanski, it was a success when it was released and I think it definitely deserves its stellar reputation. Indeed, I'm a huge fan of this flick and it is absolutely one of my favorite horror movies of all time. I mean, the whole thing is so original, really unsettling and completely spellbinding from the beginning until the end. It was Polanski's first movie in America and he became right away a major director to reckon there as well. Eventually, the drama in his own private life would prevent him to have an even bigger impact on American cinema. Anyway, fortunately, he still managed to make this timeless classic. To conclude, even though I have sometimes a difficult time with older horror flicks (for example, I believe that âThe Exorcistâ is actually one of the most overrated horror features ever made), I have a huge weak spot for this one, I think it is just spellbinding to behold.4 years, 11 months ago

Notes: I had the privilege to see this flick on the big screen but since it was ages ago, a re-watch was really needed. And I wasn't disappointed. Indeed, back then, I was pretty impressed but the second time around, I was really blown away. Basically, the whole thing is just so shocking, heartbreaking and downright revolting. In my opinion, it is easily the best movie starring Kirk Douglas and one of the best directed by Stanley Kubrick. It is basically one of the greatest anti-war movies, it is as simple as that and even though it was only Kubrick's 3rd directing feature, he was apparently already one of the great masters. For example, the battle scene was just really impressive. It might not have been as bloody as 'Saving Private Ryan' but for such an old flick, it was technically and visually quite brilliant. I above all loved the juxtaposition between the fancy headquarters, the nice little diners, the little chats, the nice dance parties the general have together and the dirt, the constant humidity, the hunger, the fear and the horror of the trenches. Also the way the generals talk about the soldiers was so despicable but, unfortunately, probably accurate. In the history books, this war was called 'The Great War' but there was nothing much great about it, except maybe the huge number of casualties.4 years, 11 months ago

Notes: Eventually, I wasnât disappointed, thatâs for sure, and it is definitely one of these movies which actually deserve their terrific reputation. Indeed, it is easily one of the best movies starring Al Pacino, the guy was really on fire back in those days, and he gave here one of his best performances. The fact that it is a true story didn't really interest me but it was just an amazing story and it kept me mesmerized until the end. Indeed, the main character, Sonny Wortzik, is such a deeply flawed but still charismatic guy, he could be one of the most intriguing characters I have ever seen. Furthermore, it is quite a dark and messed up tale and it was impressive how they managed to not sugarcoat the whole thing in any way. Sidney Lumet has made some great and not so great movies during his stellar career but this flick definitely belongs to his best flicks.4 years, 11 months ago

Notes: I know, so many years later, the twist at the end seems a little bit lame but when I saw it the first time at the movie theater, it really blew my mind. I guess it's a movie you can really enjoy only the first time and, obviously, before watching this flick, you have to be completely unaware of the twist occuring at the end. As a result, to be honest, the second watch was also pretty cool since you can check all the details but the end had therefore barely any impact. In fact, Roger Ebert really didnât like this movie at all because, according to him, there is actually nothing to understand in this plot and, therefore, he just didnât care at all for the whole thing. Ebert was definitely in the minority since this movie was a massive critical and popular success but I do understand where he was coming from and, when you re-watch this flick knowing how it will all end, it does feel a little bit pointless. Notes: This is, until further notice, my favorite Pixar movie. In my opinion, the whole thing was just mind-blowing. Where should I start? As usual with Pixar, it looked gorgeous and, as usual, it was entertaining but for the very first time, it was also very profound and rather emotional. I mean, the previous movies made by Pixar always had some interesting story and provided some interesting thoughts but with this jewel, they reached some unknown heights. It also quite impressive to see how they managed to create such a spellbinding story around a lead character who was basically mute. I mean, in our modern age, it is a really bold move to have a non-talking robot as your main character but I thought it was a great decision. I thought it was a fascinating little fellow, involved in a touching love story.4 years, 11 months ago

Notes: To be honest, with its running time of more than 9 hours, it was slightly daunting and I wonder if it is really watchable in one sitting. In my case, I split it in 5 bits and it worked fine this way. Anyway, coming back to the movie itself, it wasn't a great movie, it turned out to be one of the best movies I have ever seen, no less than that. It is such a poweful and an important movie, I believe it should be a compulsory watch in school for all the teenagers. I mean, I have seen many movies dealing with WWII but even the great classics like 'Schindler's List' or 'The Pianist' don't come near the brutality displayed in this shattering documentary. Indeed, we have all heard about the holocaust but, with this movie, the total horror comes so close, following testimonies of the victims, the perpetrators and people who just happened to be around at the time. What happened at the time was so awful, it has been ever since a trauma for the whole world but above all for Europa. 30 years later, all the people involved have now passed away making this movie even more valuable.4 years, 11 months ago
