Reservoir Dogs
Notes: It might seem hard to believe but, for many many years, Quentin Tarantino was actually struggling to make his first movie. Eventually, after many failures, he came out with this feature and the rest is now history. I remember it very well when this movie came out, there was a huge buzz around this flick and, if I recall it correctly, it was released for a whole year in Paris in the movie theaters. Anyway, it had a huge impact and it is rightfully consider one of the best directing debuts ever made. In my opinion, it is actually still one of Tarantino's best movies and, as a matter of fact, I do think that he just went downhill from there. Indeed, in my opinion, this movie was such a success because Tarantino couldn't do everything he wanted at the time and he couldn't go on and on in his egotrip that has become most of his recent features. Basically, limited in space, time and money, he produced some of his best work and there was here some amazing writing, directing and acting. Harvey Keitel made with this movie a really impressive come-back here but the rest of the cast were just as amazing and they all provided some really strong performances.

The Hustler
Notes: It has been a while since I have seen this flick and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. To be honest, before watching the damned thing, I was actually completely unaware of its reputation and I think I decided to give it a try just because the review on the TV magazine was really positive. Eventually, I was completely blown away by the whole thing and it turned out to be one of the best cinematic surprises I ever watched. First of all, for some reasons, I have always been fascinated by the pool game and by pool hustlers and this movie is just by far the best ever made dealing with this subject. Indeed, it looked gorgeous, Paul Newman gave one of his best performances and the whole thing was just really damned entertaining. Eventually, 25 years later, they would release a sequel directed by Martin Scorsese and starring both Paul Newman and Tom Cruise but while it turned out to be a decent watch, it never came near the greatness displayed in this flick, Iโ€™m afraid.

A classic

“I already saw this movie not so long ago but since it was so challenging, I thought I might as well check it out again, especially since I bought a really cool Tarkovsky Blu-Ray box-set. Obviously, since Iโ€™m such a major movie buff, I had to watch a movie directed by Andrei Tarkovsky at some point” read more

Raging Bull
Notes: When I was younger, 'Goodfellas' was definitely my favorite Scorsese feature but, nowadays, it is a toss up between this flick and 'Taxi Driver' and it is easily one of the best movies produced by De Niro and Scorsese. Basically, it is a really spellbinding story and easily the best movie dealing with an athlete. I mean, even though 'Ordinary People' was a very good flick, this masterpiece was just from another level and should have won the best picture academy award back in those days. In my opinion, if there is a time when Scoresese should have won the big prize, it was at that moment and not with 'The Departed' which was the only way the Academy could possibly apologize to this great master. Anyway, this movie is the stuff of legends. Indeed, In 1978, when Martin Scorsese was at an all-time low resulting from an addiction to cocaine, Robert De Niro visited him and told him that he had to clean himself up and make this movie. Thanks to De Niro, Scorsese was back in the game and directed one of the best movies ever made and continued to make incredible movies for the next 4 decades. Of course, we shouldn't forget De Niro who gave one of the best performances which has been a reference for many actors afterwards.

A good movie

“To be honest, I wasn't really sure what to expect from this movie but since I kept hearing some pretty good things about this flick, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, pretty much like with 'Blue Ruin', Jeremy Saulnier's previous directing effort, I have to admit that it didn't know anything a” read more

An average movie

“To be honest, I wasn't really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Jessica Alba, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, unfortunately, it turned out to so much weaker than what I could have ever anticipated. Indeed, the whole thing started with a rather cringe-” read more

An average movie

“I had no idea what to expect from this movie but since I have a weak spot for Vanessa Paradis, I thought I might as well check it out. Slumdog Millionaire
Notes: When it won the Best Picture Academy Award, I became quite intrigued by this movie. Apparently, at first, nobody was interested by this project and there was even some rumors that it might end up being released directly on DVD. Eventually, it managed to get released and the critical and public response was really enthusiast and, coming from nowhere, it was even heralded at the Oscars. Personally, even though I'm a huge cynical, I actually really loved this movie. In my opinion, it is one of the best combinations of drama, realism and entertainment I have ever seen and I think it is a great achievement. I always found that Danny Boyle was a very good director and once again, he didn't disappoint me and I'm really glad he finally received all the recognition he deserved. Personally, I don't really agree with the people criticizing its happy ending, at least, it didn't bother me. The point is that the whole thing is actually some kind of fairy tale (which explains the musical scene at the end) but it is set into a realistic harsh and grim world and I thought that this mix was amazing and to throw 'Who wants to be a millionaire' on top of that was just masterful.
