An average movie

“I wasn't expecting much from the damned thing but, since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Notes: I remember it, many years before this movie was even released , there was a huge hype surrounding it. Eventually, it became the biggest box-office success ever. Nowadays, pretty much like ‘Titanic’ , the views concerning this flick are pretty extreme and basically, many love it but also many people really hate it with a vengeance. So, according to many viewers, it is really overrated but, personally, after seeing Avatar, I realized that 3D movies could be great and not a complete swindle. The story was maybe not original but was still pretty entertaining and the visuals were just mind-blowing. Coming out of the movie theater, I had probably the same feeling when people just saw Star Wars back in 1977. By now, I have seen it a couple of times on Blu-Ray, I still think it is really good. Ok, it may not be as mind-blowing as the first time, in theater, with the 3D and all, but it remains a gorgeous flick and a milestone in motion picture history. Coming back on the story, many believe it is just a rehash of ‘Pocahontas’ and even though it is partly true, I still think there is an extra dimension to it. Indeed, the main character finally walks again and suddenly becomes another being and on a psychological and a metaphysical level, it was quite intriguing.

A good movie

“To be honest, when I heard that they were coming up with a new reboot/remake/sequel for this franchise, I can’t say I was really excited but since it had been rather well received (it was even the most successful Halloween movie ever released at the box-office), I thought I might as well check it ” read more

Notes: I heard the critics were good but I didn't expect to be blown away like this. Until now, I thought Sean Penn was a pretty good director but this one is his best by far. Indeed, I thought it was a really fascinating and thoughtfull story with some great directing and acting. Emile Hirsch shows here he is a very talented actor and I am really curious to see what he will do in the future (Eventually, his career went nowhere after all). The thing I most enjoyed was that the main character was, at the same time, inspiring and rather fascinating, but through his choices, he was also displayed as a rather selfish and arrogant young fellow and the duplicity of this character made him even more human and even more interesting to watch. I don't know, I guess, to enjoy this movie, you still have to relate with the main character's state of mind, otherwise the whole thing might seem pretentious, juvenile or even stupid to you. I mean, I would have never dare leave home like this (I did immigrate to the Netherlands when I was 22 years so I still get some extra points, I guess) but I sure can understand that someone would get fed up with our society, drop the whole thing and just get on the road.

The Dark Knight
Notes: What can I say that hasn't already been said about this movie ? It's just the best super-hero movie out there. It is is rather funny to think that before it was released, 'Spider-Man 2' used to be considered the best in this genre. I mean, Sam Raimi's opus was a decent and entertaining blockbuster, that's for sure, but compared to how Nolan revolutionized the genre with this 2nd Batman installment, it wasn't that amazing. Nolan's sequel was also the proof that you could make a commercial movie, make a lot of bucks and still making a damn entertaining and not completely brainless picture at the same time. Never before a super-hero feature had been so epic with such a great cast, such awesome action scenes and such a memorable bad guy thanks to an exceptional performance by the late Heath Ledger. Still, even though I'm wildly enthusiast about this flick, it is not even the best thing Nolan has done in his short career as I prefer his work not involving the Cape crusader such as 'The Prestige' or 'Memento'.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Notes: Like every year, I went back from Holland to France on Christmas holiday and I went to see this movie with my best buddy and some other friends. Personally, I really liked 'The Fellowship', I liked even more 'The Two Towers' and I thought this one was the best of them. Even though some complain that there were too many endings (and indeed I think that all those multiple endings took at least 30 minutes), I thought it was such a great conclusion. I mean, the action scenes were awesome but there were also many memorable bits. For example, each time I see the scene where Sam carries Frodo on top of Mount Doom, it just breaks my heart completely ('I can't carry it for you... but I can carry you!'). In my opinion, this whole trilogy is based on a huge built-up and this final installment is just a huge and mighty climax, ending one of the greatest tales put on the silver screen. Maybe in the 80's, they had The Star Wars trilogy but our generation can proudly say "We saw The Lord of the Rings back then when it came out and it was freaking awesome!!!". I can't wait to brag about it with my great children. Anyway, this trilogy is amazing and this last installment is, in my opinion, the best part, I have seen it many times and I never get tired of it.

Notes: In my opinion, it is such a brilliant movie. I have actually seen it several times when I was younger, even in the movie theater when it was released but the last time was more than a decade ago so I really wanted to check it out again. Well, I wasn't disappointed, that's for sure. I'm actually rather amazed that it doesn't get more credit than this. I seriously believe that it is practically flawless. Indeed, you have here a profound and fascinating story, some very strong visuals but still grounded in reality, a mesmerizing soundtrack creating a great melancholic feeling and a top-notch cast giving some rather flawless performances. In fact, back then, Jude Law was practically unknown and this movie definitely launched his career. Basically, it is a great achievement and it's a pity this movie is now pretty much forgotten. Many years later, Andrew Niccol came back with another SF feature called 'In Time' and while there was once again a great concept involved, it was this time just so poorly developed and the whole thing was therefore rather disappointing.
