Notes: Basically, it is my favorite Western. Indeed, I started to watch it as a kid with my father and I was actually planning to watch it again this time with my step-son but I ended up watching it on my own. I guess it is just too slow-paced for him. Anyway, I had recently watched again ‘A Fistful of Dollars’ and ‘For a Few Dollars More’ so I obviously had to round up this trilogy with this seminal classic. In my opinion, it clearly stands apart from the rest of the trilogy as the scope was much bigger this time and Sergio Leone had a rather impressive budget, at least for the time period. Indeed, there was even some room for a war scene and Leone didn’t really focus on Clint Eastwood like in the previous movies but he spent some good amount of time with Eli Wallach who had a great character (as a matter of fact, he even had the most screen-time) and he made a great duo with Eastwood. Maybe they could have developed a little more Lee Van Cleef’s character but it wasn’t really a big deal. Eventually, it is pretty much a childhood favorite which goes with Star Wars and Indiana Jones and it is obviously a great classic.5 years ago

Notes: Since I kept hearing some really great things about this flick, I was really eager to check it out and I had some rather high expectations. Eventually, the whole thing turned out be even better than I expected which is something that very rarely happens. Obviously, it was highly controversial in France where it was banned for many years which is not surprising since this movie was shot only 3 years after the actual independence of Algeria. This civil war lasted almost a decade and was very traumatizing for France so, to get such a bleak realistic depiction of this war so soon after this conflict was ended was probably too hard to swallow for the French audience. Anyway, first of all, as a history lesson, it is pretty amazing and, in my opinion, it should be actually compulsory viewings for all teenagers. On top of that, it is not only an incredibly valuable historical feature. Indeed, as a movie, it was just fascinating to behold and I would go as far saying that it was one of the most spellbinding thrillers I have ever seen. 5 years ago

Notes: For many people, it remains the best movie directed by Martin Scorsese and, for some, it is even the best movie ever made. Personally, I think it is probably the first flick directed by Scorsese that I saw. Back then, I must been have 15-16 years old and, indeed, I thought it was just awesome. Whereas I had to watch the Godfather at least twice before I was really able to enjoy it, I loved this movie right away. Indeed, the whole thing was just full of energy and adrenaline, filled with conflicted and fascinating characters. Basically, it is a great movie and of course one of the best movies directed by Martin Scorsese. Still, as I grow older I must admit that, in the same genre, I tend to enjoy more The Godfather flicks than this one because they are more subtle and more cerebral in my opinion but it remains a great movie. The whole thing is just plain entertaining and completely fascinating and unfortunately, once again, back then, Martin Scorsese was ignored by the academy and, instead, the decent but not really great 'Dances with the wolves' ended up with the big prize.5 years ago

Notes: It has been a while since I have seen this movie and I would really like to watch it again at some point. In fact, I do have a DVD of this movie but it’s only dubbed in Dutch and I would rather re-watch it in the original French language. Anyway, it’s a movie I watched so many times as a kid and, back then, I thought it was just spellbinding to behold but it’s a movie that I can be appreciated by children and grown-ups alike. It was made when there was still no CGI animation and I do believe it’s a shame that the hand-drawn animation has been dropped by most studios because such movies were also quite gorgeous to look at. On top of that, in this case, there was also some humour and adventure and it was probably the most poetic animated feature I have seen so far. It’s such a pity that Paul Grimault never managed to release another full length feature afterwards because I do believe that the guy was probably one of the best animation directors that ever lived.5 years ago

Notes: By now, I have seen all the movies directed by Hayao Miyazaki and, after watching his flicks, I must admit it, most of them didn’t really blow me away. I mean, they were all pretty good, the hand-drawn animation displayed was nothing short of marvelous but, to be honest, I always have a hard time to get into his stories. Still, there was one major exception though and it was this masterpiece which I just really loved. Indeed, I have all respect for the Disney animated features and they definitely made some great pictures but, in my opinion, Hayao Miyazaki displayed here so much more imagination and this feature was just so much more spellbinding. Once again, it was visually amazing but, for once, the story was just so fascinating. Indeed, not only did Miyazaki deliver a fascinating world but also he gave us a dark and thrilling tale with some quiet moments and some frenetic action. Furthermore, the pacing which be can challenging in most of Ghibli productions was just flawless here. Another major improvement was that the main character was quite complex and I really cared about what she was going through. It is interesting to note that my wife thought it would be too dark for my kids but I still made all my children watched this flick when they were very young and they were all mesmerized.5 years ago
