Notes: Eventually, I thought it was quite amazing and it was much better than anything directed before or after by Wolfgang Petersen. Anyhow, I always thought that there was something fascinating about movies dealing with submarines and this one is by far the best one. Indeed, since then, it has been imitated numerous times but this feature remains the reference in its genre and I will remain so a for a long time. Basically, the directing was amazing and, like I said before, you could argue that Wolfgang Petersen never reached these heights again in his career. In my opinion, the mood was intense, there was a completely nail-biting tension and I was on the edge of my seat from the beginning until the last seconds. At the end of the day, it is not only a great submarine movie, it is basically one of the best war features ever made.5 years ago

What was it about?
This movie digs into the outrageous ecosystem of fraternity life long before the country turned against it.
My two cents:
Apparently, it was supposed to be released by HBO but it was banned because it was supposedly fake or, at least, some part of it. My guess was that the first part was genuine but, when Phillips got stuck half way through, they faked the rest as it seemed rather unlikely that the filmmaker would get involved himself with the pledges. Anyway, eventually, it doesn't really matter, at least, not to me. Indeed, I have to admit that I was expecting a movie dealing more with the everyday life in a frat house, especially the wild parties. Instead, it was more about the pledges and hazing you have to go through to get accepted in a fraternity. Well, while this process was interesting and, I'm afraid, fairly realistically depicted, it was also rather repetitive and barely entertaining. Basically, you get to see a bunch of stupid grown-ups doing some awful things to another bunch of equally ignorant grown-ups just because, well, they can. And after that, you are supposed to believe that College is/was the best part in the average life of most American men.
My rating: 06/10

Notes: By now, I have seen all the movies involving the Monty Python and while I was wildly enthousiast at first, I must admit it that I was a little bit disappointed. I mean, I more or less enjoyed all their movies but I didn’t find them really excellent and I came to the conclusion that their humor is not really my cup of tea. However, there is one exception and it is this flick. Indeed, contrary to the rest of their work, I really loved this comedy, for once I was able to completely connect with their humor and, in my opinion, I would go as far as saying that it is easily one of the best comedies ever made. Indeed, first of all, the concept was just awesome. Even though I’m not a religious man, I always thought that religion is a fascinating subject and I have never seen a comedy who managed to tackle this subject so successfully. On top of that, the jokes were really hilarious. Of course, not all of them were great but most of them were just spot on.5 years ago

Notes: Even though ‘Boogie Nights’ had made quite an impression at the time, it was with his 3rd directing effort that Paul Thomas Anderson really made his breakthrough. Personally, I think he is one of the best directors at work nowadays and this might be his best movie so far but I would have to rewatch ‘There Will Be Blood ’ to make up my mind for good. Basically, ‘There Will Be Blood’ is indeed a great flick but it mostly deals only with one character whereas this movie deals with a whole bunch of people played by an impressive cast. This movie was also responsible of making the hyperlink gimmick so popular (several loose story lines are intertwined and usually ends up together) and it must be the best movie in this genre. As a result, it displays some really interesting characters and stories, some strong directing and all the actors involved gave some very good performances. Indeed, even though Tom Cruise might have seemed to be insane, he definitely can act and when he leaves his comfort zone, he can be actually pretty amazing.5 years ago
