Dog Day Afternoon
Notes: Eventually, I wasn’t disappointed, that’s for sure, and it is definitely one of these movies which actually deserve their terrific reputation. Indeed, it is easily one of the best movies starring Al Pacino, the guy was really on fire back in those days, and he gave here one of his best performances. The fact that it is a true story didn't really interest me but it was just an amazing story and it kept me mesmerized until the end. Indeed, the main character, Sonny Wortzik, is such a deeply flawed but still charismatic guy, he could be one of the most intriguing characters I have ever seen. Furthermore, it is quite a dark and messed up tale and it was impressive how they managed to not sugarcoat the whole thing in any way. Sidney Lumet has made some great and not so great movies during his stellar career but this flick definitely belongs to his best flicks.

Shoah (1985)
Notes: To be honest, with its running time of more than 9 hours, it was slightly daunting and I wonder if it is really watchable in one sitting. In my case, I split it in 5 bits and it worked fine this way. Anyway, coming back to the movie itself, it wasn't a great movie, it turned out to be one of the best movies I have ever seen, no less than that. It is such a poweful and an important movie, I believe it should be a compulsory watch in school for all the teenagers. I mean, I have seen many movies dealing with WWII but even the great classics like 'Schindler's List' or 'The Pianist' don't come near the brutality displayed in this shattering documentary. Indeed, we have all heard about the holocaust but, with this movie, the total horror comes so close, following testimonies of the victims, the perpetrators and people who just happened to be around at the time. What happened at the time was so awful, it has been ever since a trauma for the whole world but above all for Europa. 30 years later, all the people involved have now passed away making this movie even more valuable.

“I wasn’t expecting much from this flick but since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, I wonder if the original version starring Terry O'Quinn was any good but this remake was pretty weak, I’m afraid. Basically, it was supposed to be a rather creepy movie ab” read more

WALL·E
Notes: This is, until further notice, my favorite Pixar movie. In my opinion, the whole thing was just mind-blowing. Where should I start? As usual with Pixar, it looked gorgeous and, as usual, it was entertaining but for the very first time, it was also very profound and rather emotional. I mean, the previous movies made by Pixar always had some interesting story and provided some interesting thoughts but with this jewel, they reached some unknown heights. It also quite impressive to see how they managed to create such a spellbinding story around a lead character who was basically mute. I mean, in our modern age, it is a really bold move to have a non-talking robot as your main character but I thought it was a great decision. I thought it was a fascinating little fellow, involved in a touching love story.

“To be honest, when I heard that we would watch the latest movie directed by Johan Nijhenhuis, I can't say I shared the enthusiasm displayed by the rest of my film club. Well, at least, Nijenhuis probably did deliver the best movie of his career but it doesn't mean I really liked it though. Basically” read more

“I wasn't expecting much from this flick but I have to admit that I was curious to see if it really deserved its terrible reputation. Well, to be honest, even if it was pretty weak, I don't think it was so bad. The main issue remains that, even though Dakota Johnson was a perfect choice for this role” read more

“To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of the Muppets but since their last movie was available on Disney+, I thought I might as well check it out. First of all, I really liked the fact that they went for a completely different approach than what they did in the previous instalment and, Constantine, Kerm” read more

De Beentjes van Sint Hildegard
chosen by Eric Notes: To be honest, when I heard that we would watch the latest movie directed by Johan Nijhenhuis, I can't say I shared the enthusiasm displayed by the rest of the film club. Well, at least, Nijenhuis probably did deliver the best movie of his career but it doesn't mean I really liked it though. Basically, this Dutch director has made a career delivering some really successful but also really fluffy romantic-comedies and, while this movie definitely had more substance than his usual work, I'm afraid it was still too shallow for my taste. First of all, even though I have to admit that some of the jokes were really funny, most of the characters were actually more annoying than actually entertaining. Then, I really liked the idea of making a comedy about Alzheimer's disease but the whole concept was rather poorly handled, especially since the tone was so light, and it would have worked so much better with some pitch-black humor. Eventually, during the last 30 minutes, they finally dealt more seriously with the main issue within this relationship but it came just too late in my opinion. Still, Herman Finkers is definitely a really charismatic man and I have to admit that it was really entertaining to see a movie in Twents dialect. (Feb. 2020)

Double Indemnity
Notes: It turned out to be a spellbinding film noir, easily one of the best movies in this genre, and it completely deserved its stellar reputation. What I loved the most was the simple and minimalistic way this story was told. Indeed, most of the movie was just about Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck only together in one room talking with each other and giving us some of the best dialogues ever written for a movie. Nowadays, they would give us some boring climax with some huge action scene and, of course, the usual tedious twist at the end but, here, the whole thing remained focused and sharp from the beginning and until the end. It was like the plan they came up with, it was not so far-fetched at all and it made the whole thing even more spellbinding to behold. I also loved the fact that the main character was not fooled by this girl and at first simply walked away when he found out what she was up to, even if he felt terribly attracted to her. That's another great thing about this movie, the characters were all rather shaddy and you could never be sure what they were actually thinking.

Downfall
Notes: Eventually, I wasn't disappointed. Indeed, I thought it was really an amazing movie and I would go even further by saying that it is probably the last great war movie in my opinion.I remember, after watching it, I discussed it with my wife and she argued that the makers could have never known how the whole thing exactly happened. Personally, I think it is totally irrelevant though but it still seemed pretty convincing in my opinion. Basically, it is a fascinating study giving us the magnitude of the sheer madness of those guys. 70 years later, it remains difficult to comprehend that literally millions of people followed this guy and his ideology. That's also the other great thing about this flick, the impressive performance given by Bruno Ganz. Indeed, up to that point, the general perception I had of Adolf Hilter was one of a barking man during his distressing speeches. Here, Ganz managed to give him another dimension. I mean, the madness, the megalomania, it is all there but, and that's the most controversial aspect of this movie, they gave him some human features because, after all, he was also a human being with actual feelings which is a concept hard to believe and/or accept... Anyway, Bruno Ganz was brilliant and he must have been one of the most underrated actors ever.
