An average movie

“To be honest, I wasn't really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Jessica Alba, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, unfortunately, it turned out to so much weaker than what I could have ever anticipated. Indeed, the whole thing started with a rather cringe-” read more

An average movie

“I had no idea what to expect from this movie but since I have a weak spot for Vanessa Paradis, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, I really struggled to get a grip on the damned thing. Basically, Jean-Marc Vallée tried to mix here two completely different tales, one taking p” read more

Slumdog Millionaire
Notes: When it won the Best Picture Academy Award, I became quite intrigued by this movie. Apparently, at first, nobody was interested by this project and there was even some rumors that it might end up being released directly on DVD. Eventually, it managed to get released and the critical and public response was really enthusiast and, coming from nowhere, it was even heralded at the Oscars. Personally, even though I'm a huge cynical, I actually really loved this movie. In my opinion, it is one of the best combinations of drama, realism and entertainment I have ever seen and I think it is a great achievement. I always found that Danny Boyle was a very good director and once again, he didn't disappoint me and I'm really glad he finally received all the recognition he deserved. Personally, I don't really agree with the people criticizing its happy ending, at least, it didn't bother me. The point is that the whole thing is actually some kind of fairy tale (which explains the musical scene at the end) but it is set into a realistic harsh and grim world and I thought that this mix was amazing and to throw 'Who wants to be a millionaire' on top of that was just masterful.

Hoop Dreams
Notes: Since I keep hearing many good things about this flick and, eventually, I was seriously blown away by the whole thing. Indeed, the whole thing was just spellbinding to watch and it is definitely one of the best documentaries I have ever seen. Basically, it is a really amazing movie describing the harsh realities in America involving the life in the ghetto and what is at stake for the boys who get a shot at becoming a professional sportsman. At first, it seemed to be pretty straightforward and predictable but, then, what makes this movie really work is that the director followed these boys for 5 years and, as a result, you get really close to them and it became some kind of social drama of epic proportions. Somehow, this movie reminded me of ‘Boyhood’ which was a fictional feature directed by Richard Linklater which was also shot over 12 years following a boy from age 6 until he reached 18 years old.

Rosemary
Notes: Basically, it is yet another masterpiece directed by Roman Polanski, it was a success when it was released and I think it definitely deserves its stellar reputation. Indeed, I'm a huge fan of this flick and it is absolutely one of my favorite horror movies of all time. I mean, the whole thing is so original, really unsettling and completely spellbinding from the beginning until the end. It was Polanski's first movie in America and he became right away a major director to reckon there as well. Eventually, the drama in his own private life would prevent him to have an even bigger impact on American cinema. Anyway, fortunately, he still managed to make this timeless classic. To conclude, even though I have sometimes a difficult time with older horror flicks (for example, I believe that ‘The Exorcist’ is actually one of the most overrated horror features ever made), I have a huge weak spot for this one, I think it is just spellbinding to behold.

Paths of Glory
Notes: I had the privilege to see this flick on the big screen but since it was ages ago, a re-watch was really needed. And I wasn't disappointed. Indeed, back then, I was pretty impressed but the second time around, I was really blown away. Basically, the whole thing is just so shocking, heartbreaking and downright revolting. In my opinion, it is easily the best movie starring Kirk Douglas and one of the best directed by Stanley Kubrick. It is basically one of the greatest anti-war movies, it is as simple as that and even though it was only Kubrick's 3rd directing feature, he was apparently already one of the great masters. For example, the battle scene was just really impressive. It might not have been as bloody as 'Saving Private Ryan' but for such an old flick, it was technically and visually quite brilliant. I above all loved the juxtaposition between the fancy headquarters, the nice little diners, the little chats, the nice dance parties the general have together and the dirt, the constant humidity, the hunger, the fear and the horror of the trenches. Also the way the generals talk about the soldiers was so despicable but, unfortunately, probably accurate. In the history books, this war was called 'The Great War' but there was nothing much great about it, except maybe the huge number of casualties.

Dog Day Afternoon
Notes: Eventually, I wasn’t disappointed, that’s for sure, and it is definitely one of these movies which actually deserve their terrific reputation. Indeed, it is easily one of the best movies starring Al Pacino, the guy was really on fire back in those days, and he gave here one of his best performances. The fact that it is a true story didn't really interest me but it was just an amazing story and it kept me mesmerized until the end. Indeed, the main character, Sonny Wortzik, is such a deeply flawed but still charismatic guy, he could be one of the most intriguing characters I have ever seen. Furthermore, it is quite a dark and messed up tale and it was impressive how they managed to not sugarcoat the whole thing in any way. Sidney Lumet has made some great and not so great movies during his stellar career but this flick definitely belongs to his best flicks.

The Usual Suspects
Notes: I know, so many years later, the twist at the end seems a little bit lame but when I saw it the first time at the movie theater, it really blew my mind. I guess it's a movie you can really enjoy only the first time and, obviously, before watching this flick, you have to be completely unaware of the twist occuring at the end. As a result, to be honest, the second watch was also pretty cool since you can check all the details but the end had therefore barely any impact. In fact, Roger Ebert really didn’t like this movie at all because, according to him, there is actually nothing to understand in this plot and, therefore, he just didn’t care at all for the whole thing. Ebert was definitely in the minority since this movie was a massive critical and popular success but I do understand where he was coming from and, when you re-watch this flick knowing how it will all end, it does feel a little bit pointless. Still, there is no denying that I was completely blown away by this flick.

“To be honest, I’m not really sure if we really needed yet another movie about this tormented artist but since I always had a weak spot for Julian Schnabel’s work, I was really eager to check it out.
