“I had no idea what to expect from this movie but since I have a weak spot for Jessica Biel and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. To be honest, during the first half, I had a hard time to care about the damned thing as it seemed to be a rather generic and pred” read more

Memento
Notes: The funny thing is that, when this movie was released, back then I was living in England, the trailer didn't really impress me. Honestly, I thought it looked like any other convoluted dark thriller with a guy with some weird tattoos. A year later, I was back in France renting a movie with my best friend and we had no idea what to watch. My friend suggested this because there was absolutely nothing else and we both had no idea what it was about. Eventually, we started the damned thing and it took us at least 15 minutes to figure out the weird structure but then, we were both hooked. The funny thing is that we were at his house and even though we started with only the two of us, every 15 minutes, someone else would show up so we would stop the movie, explain what was going on and further move on. At the end, we were like 6 people watching this flick, none of us had heard from it before but we were all mesmerized. Basically, I think this movie is really amazing. At the end, you are so confused. I'm sure a lot of people are annoyed by this but I just love this feeling. Even though you have more information than Leonard, the main character, at the end, it still remains a big blur. How long has been he on the run ? 1 year ? 2 years ? longer ? How many John D. has he killed ? Was his wife killed or did he made that up ? So many questions remain even if you watch the movies 20 times. I just think it is fascinating and even after multiple re-watch, I still remains flawless. There were even some hilarious bits, funnier than most of the lame comedies I have watched. Of course, there are some plot-holes. For example, with his disease, Leonard shouldn't be aware that he has this sickness and he shouldn't even know what is tattoos or his pictures mean. Furthermore, he always forget precisely at the right moment so that the movie could be properly edited. In my opinion, those are minor flaws though, and to me, this movie is pretty damned amazing.

“To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, unfortunately, it turned out to be another misguided and completely unnecessary American remake. Obviously, they had to tweak this story to ma” read more

Fight Club
Notes: In my opinion, it is hands down David Fincher's best movie and I think it is a great achievement. Back then, when it was released, it was actually a flop, above all thanks to the terrible marketing campaign which focused on the fighting. Of course, this movie is not about fighting, it is filled with many more ideas and I especially enjoyed how they focused on insanity. 10 years later, it remains David Fincher's most ambitious project, it is sometimes thrilling, funny but very very dark. All those elements are mixed together in an incredible visual style, something we have been used to get again and again from this director. Not everybody, like Roger Ebert for example, did like this movie actually. Some people thought it was too violent, some others thought it had a dubious message. I think that, in order to enjoy this movie, you have to understand that the main character is insane, so all the people following his orders are not really wise and his relationship with Helena Bonham-Carter is bound to be messed up as well. My point is that it is a messed up and chaotic movie but brilliantly directed and I really loved it.

“To be honest, I have to admit that I wasn’t a huge fan of ‘Anchorman’ and I wasn’t surprised that this long delayed sequel didn’t get much love when it was released. The issue with this movie and its predecessor is that Ron Burgundy is such a moron. Sure, I get that is the whole point but ” read more

“To be honest, I wasn't really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. “To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from this flick but since it was available on Disney+, I thought I might as well check it out. Basically, it was one of these Package films Disney released during WWII before going back to some more prestigious work like 'Cinderella'. Well, I usually don't care ” read more

“Of course, like most guys of my age, I have been watching Star Wars my whole life (the first trilogy with my dad, the second trilogy with my buddies and this 3rd trilogy with my step-son) so, obviously, I was really eager to watch this final episode. Unfortunately, it was still the least satisfying ” read more

Citizen Kane (1941)
Notes: There always will be a debate about this movie. Some think it is indeed the best movie ever made and some will tell you it is the most overrated movie ever made. It is always the risk with such a huge classic that, if you watch it at a very young age (like I did the first time around) after building up some huge expectations, you might wonder what was the fuss all about. In my opinion, this movie is great because it is really subtle and also because it was much ahead of its time. I think it is something you can appreciate most of all if you have seen a lot of movies. Anyway, the second time I watched it, I was then able to see how modern and so well put together the whole thing was. It was simply mesmerizing. And think about it, Orson Welles was only 26 when he directed it... That's rather insane. To think that, at such a young age, this man who was much younger than me, managed to make possibly the best movie of all time. The thought is rather mind-blowing and it was also a curse for Orson Welles who always struggled as a director ever since, even though some of his following directing efforts were more than decent.

American Beauty
Notes: In fact, I remember it very well when I first saw this movie. I actually had the pleasure to see it in the movie theater when it was released and, back then, I was seriously blown away by the whole thing. Indeed, I thought it was a great movie. Seriously, it is not very often that I came across such a movie which really deserved all the praises it received and what I enjoyed the most was the tone. Basically, even though there was a lot of bleakness in this story, it was often quite hilarious as well and the balance between bliss and despair was rather pitch perfect. The other thing I loved about this movie is that all the characters were just fascinating to behold, even if Annette Bening’s character could have been more developed but it was not a major issue. Concerning Sam Mendes, he delivered here one of the very best directing debuts which was quite awesome but it had its downside as well since, like Orson Welles with ‘Citizen Kane’, he might never be able to reach such heights in his career ever again.

“Since I kept hearing some really good things about this movie, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, even if I really liked it, to be honest, I have to admit that it didn’t really blow me away though. The main issue, I guess, was that there were some big chunks of time during which nothing much” read more
