Soldier of Orange (1977)
Notes: In the Netherlands, this movie is a huge classic and it is broadcasted on TV at least twice or three times a year. I mean, most of Paul Verhoeven's movies are more or less controversial but this one is usually considered a Dutch national treasure. It was, at the time, the most expensive Dutch movie ever made and it is indeed a very well made WWII feature with a gripping story, some decent directing and some very good actors. At some point, such actors like Alec Guinness, David Niven, Julie Christie, Henry Fonda or Charlotte Rampling were attached but, probably for some budgetary reasons, they didn't show up after all. Instead, Paul Verhoeven was yet again working with Rutger Hauer (he wasn't in fact his first choice but Hauer gave apparently a great audition) and it is a real shame that they didn't get along while making 'Flesh & Blood' in 1985 as they would never make another movie together. To be honest, the whole thing tends to be a little bit too patriotic and self-centered for my taste but it is still a really solid historical flick.

“To be honest, I had no idea what to expect from this flick but since it was suggested by one of my favorite Listal members, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even though the beginning was intriguing, unfortunately, from the moment that Charlotte drugged Lizzie and had her cut off her own” read more

“I had no idea what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. I was wondering if it was the first movie I saw directed by Chris Rock and, to be honest, I have to admit that I completely forgot that I saw years ago ‘I Think I Love M” read more

Notes: To be honest, I don't really understand why this movie was a flop when it was released. Indeed, in my opinion, it is easily one of the best movies delivered by Fincher so far but I guess the average viewer would rather have some far-fetched psychopath thriller with some preposterous twist than this marvel of cerebral film making. Personally, I have nothing against the more typical movies based on serial killers. Indeed, they're usually pretty entertaining but, in my opinion, they are also almost always over the top. Not this one though. Indeed, it didn't matter that it was based on a true story, what mattered, in my opinion, was that it was really realistic with some great directing with a keen eye for details. As a result, you had no chases and shootings or stuff like that but a deliberate slow pace which I loved but, apparently, it was one of the main complaints towards this gem. Furthermore, you had here some realistic police and realistic journalistic work and, basically, some great directing.

“I wasn’t exactly blown away by ‘John Wick’ but since this sequel had been even more successful at the box-office, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, once again, I was hardly impressed by Wick’s new adventure. In fact, I think that the first instalment was more specta” read more

Notes: Well, it is probably Roman Polanski's most famous movie and, I think it completely deserves its stellar reputation. Indeed, it is basically a great mix of a traditional neo-noir feature with Polanski's dark and twisted directing style. I have to admit that the plot tends to be a little bit murky so it is definitely a movie that you can easily watch a couple of times just to fully understand all the details and what the hell is actually going on. Anyway, the murkiness of the plot was actually something really inherent to genre and I really enjoyed the fact that none of the characters were really good as they all seemed to be pretty messed up, something recurrent in Polanski's work. This movie is also one of the many classics starring Jack Nicholson and he was just great in this. Eventually, it would be the last picture Polanski made in the US as he had to fled the country following the neverending drama involved in his personal life. It's such a pity because, back then, he was one of the most successful and highly regarded movie directors in the world.

Notes: Personally, I always had a rather hard time with John Hugues. Indeed, by now, I have seen almost all his directing efforts (I still need to see ‘She’s having a Baby’ though) and none of his movies really impressed me. However, there was one notable exception and it is this flick which was indeed quite amazing. First of all, it was the first movie directed by Hughes that I saw so maybe I wasn’t fed up yet with his directing style. Above all, I thought it was the only movie he made for which I thoroughly enjoyed the tone. Indeed, usually, I think the plots he develops are utterly childish and hardly entertaining. This time, even though there were some fun moments, there were also some rather grim scenes and the balance between those moods was very well done. On top of that, the characters, who are usually terribly underwhelming in his work, were very well written, quite complex and rather fascinating to behold. It has always been said that John Hughes was great at creating some compelling portrayals of teenagers but I rather disagree. In my opinion, his teenagers are usually some underwhelming walking clichés but, in this movie, I have to admit it, he got it right though and gave the right amount of self-righteousness, arrogance and lack of self-esteem and confidence.

A good movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I always had a weak spot for Benicio Del Toro, I was quite eager to check it out. To be honest, it was rather tricky to watch this flick after ‘Narcos’ which gave such a fascinating immersive look into the life of the notorious Drug” read more
