Notes: I really liked this movie but the only low point for me was that it was very over-hyped before I watched it for the first time and my expectations were kind of huge. So, it wasn't as great as I hoped but it still quite impressive. Furthermore, there was some great directing, some very good acting and a very interesting story. At some point, I watched it again to make up my mind for good but, basically, I had the same feeling as the first time around. Above all, there are indeed some visually truly amazing scenes and just for them, you should check this flick. Furthermore, I really enjoyed the acting, especially by Michael Caine who was just awesome as usual. But the rest of the cast (Clive Owen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Julianne Moore, Danny Huston) was very good as well. Basically, they followed the current trend of showing the near future without too many fancy gadgets but with more similarity to our current world. In my opinion, it worked very well and the tone was very well set. Unfortunately, even though the story was intriguing, I was still not completely blown away, especially by this rather disappointing ending. It feels as if they spent loads of time creating this fascinating vision of the future but eventually they didn't know what to do with it.
Anyway, it is still a modern classic.

Notes: I really loved the damned thing and it turned out to be the best horror film I have seen for a very long time, no less than that. To be honest, it is definitely a slow-burn movie and, if you would expect a standard horror flick, you would be disappointed since at least 3/4 is actually a family drama. In fact, many viewers consider this movie as a drama but I can't remember the last time I watched a movie mixing these two genres so well. As a result, the dramatic parts managed to ground the story and the characters and you had more time to get to know and care about them. Still, the last 30 minutes, when the horror part finally really kicked in, were just so unsettling and pretty damned f*cking scary, it was just an awesome way to conclude this tale. Sure, you could argue that the outcome was after all rather predictable but it worked just fine for me. On top of that, I just loved that, even though some stuff was explained, they didn't chew out everything freaking details and the fact that some of it remained mysterious made the whole thing even more spellbinding to behold. And, of course, Toni Collette displayed once again that she is a terribly underrated character actress as she delivered here another really strong performance.

Notes: What I loved the most was how it started as a really realistic look on how a TV network works and it was easily one of the best, or maybe the very best depiction of this world I have seen so far, but it became so much more. Indeed, they went so much further than that and, slowly, it became something rather insane. The chilling and at the same time fascinating thing was that all the crazy stuff while it was becoming more and more preposterous by the minute still felt possible somehow and it is considered by many as a prophetic movie. Eventually, the only thing that didn't really work for was the love story involving Diana and Max. I mean, I don't blame Faye Runaway and William Holden, they were both pretty much pitch-perfect, but it was rather unbelievable that these two characters would extend their romantic relationship beyond their first one-night stand. Basically, they got involved only so the writer could give Max a nice juicy speech towards the end. Still, the material was just so dense and fascinating, it gave an amazing reflection on how most people of my generation have grown up in front of their TV sets and how we have been shaped by this medium.

Notes: This movie is an exception. Indeed, there is a rule saying that a sequel should never be better than its predecessor but, fortunately, there are a few exceptions and this movie is one of them. Indeed, if I recall it correctly, โBefore Sunriseโ was the first movie directed by Richard Linklater which I had the pleasure to watch and it was definitely a solid romantic feature. However, you could feel that Linklater was still inexperienced with the material (It was only his 4th directing effort and his first romantic outing). It was the same thing concerning Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. Their performances were pretty good and I believed in their characters but I thought that the whole thing was a little too self-conscious and pretentious. So, 10 years later, they came back with the same characters and they went back where they left it and the end-result was just quite impressive. Indeed, the director and both actors had grown older just like the characters and wrote together this impressive piece of work. Basically, just like the previous installment, there was not much action during the whole thing, just 2 characters talking to each other. It might sound dull but it was just the opposite, it was really spellbinding to watch. And this time, there were so many layers, the joy to see each other again, the bitterness about the missed opportunities, the frustration concerning their life, the love still lingering there somewhere and many more. In the first movie, it all ended in a rather melodramatic way but it fitted perfectly those characters at that moment in their life. This time, the ending was more ambiguous and, once again, an improvement.
