Have a Good Trip

Ex Machina
Notes: I wasn't disappointed and it turned out to be easily the smartest movie released in 2014. Indeed, even though it was visually quite appealing, it was above all the fascinating ideas developed in this picture that really appealed to me. As a matter of fact, just a few weeks ago, I saw a talk show on TV where they were saying that, indeed, some big companies like Google are currently investigating on AI and we should expect some major breakthrough in this area in the near future. In this movie, you could see already the issues we would have to face if we would come up with a very intelligent AI. For example, how could we know what an AI is actually exactly thinking? What would be its purpose in life, a concept we humans are constantly struggling with? And most important, what would be then our purpose?

Spenser Confidential
Notes: From the 5 movies that Peter Berg has made with Mark Wahlberg so far, even if I haven’t even seen yet ‘Patriots Day’, I’m pretty confident that this flick will be the weakest of the bunch. I mean, the opening scene was decent enough, at least, until the characters involved started a brawl. Seriously, it has been a while since I have seen such an uninspired fight scene and, unfortunately, it was pretty much representative of the quality of the whole movie, I’m afraid. Indeed, even he is definitely not the greatest actor out there, Mark Wahlberg has a decent comic timing and the guy can be entertaining but, with such a generic material, there was not much the guy could do, I’m afraid. Concerning Winston Duke, I won’t blame the guy but their characters barely had any chemistry together. On top of that, to make the main character team up with his roommate - because, well, there was basically no one else available - was rather pathetic. At least, Post Malone was pretty convincing and it would have been neat if they could have managed to expand his part as he only had 2 scenes. Anyway, he was probably the only interesting thing about this movie.

Straw Dogs
Notes: It has been a while since I have seen this movie and I will definitely check it out again when I have the opportunity. To be honest, I was actually slightly disappointed by ‘Wild Bunch’. I mean, sure, I thought it was pretty good but I failed to see what was so impressive and, in fact, I was more able to connect with this other classic directed by Sam Peckinpah. In my opinion, it is actually one of his more subtle directing efforts. Of course, in fact, as usual with this rather brutal director, it wasn’t actually not subtle at all, quite violent, especially back in those days and borderline misogynist but, for a Peckinpah feature, it had actually quite some depth. I also enjoyed to see Dustin Hoffman who has at the top of his game at the time. Indeed, Hoffman was an unexpected but great choice to play the lead and I thought it was more intriguing to have him go beserk instead of one of the usual tough guys that you might have in such a violent setting.

Incendies
Notes: Basically, it is a really slow burning drama but it was very effective and the ending was just heart-breaking. Still, I thought it was a little bit frustrating that they never named in which country the whole thing took place and it bugged me so much, I had to stop half way through it to look it up on the internet. And, indeed, it takes place in an unnamed Middle-Eastern country based on Lebanon. There were also some refugees whose nationality was never specified. Even though I consider myself an history buff, I was sometimes confused, and if you don’t have any knowledge of this region history, I’m pretty sure you’ll be confused as well. Anyway, it didn’t change the fact that it was a fascinating drama with some shades of thriller elements. The cast was also really good and, like I said before, the ending was completely heartbreaking hitting me like a truck on full speed. Usually, I’m annoyed to death by the typical twist ending provided by your average Hollywood thriller. It is a useless gimmick but, in this movie, it was really good and appropriate. Even the random chronology which is so much overused nowadays worked really well here. This movie was also a terrible reminder of all the atrocities which have been taken place in the last 50 years in the Middle East.

An average movie

“To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even though it is probably the best movie I have seen released by Netflix so far this year (it is actually a rather low bar), I was still not reall” read more

A very good movie

“To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was directed by Asghar Farhadi, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, after his French movie (‘Le passé’) and before his Spanish movie (‘Todos lo saben’), Farhadi went back to Iran to make this flick which t” read more

The Killing
Notes: Even though Stanley Kubrick had already directed a few movies before, it was really with this directing effort that he started to display the extent of his talent, becoming one of the most exciting upcoming directors. From this movie and during the following 40 years, each and every movie he will deliver afterwards would turn out to be pretty much amazing which is something no other director has ever managed to achieve. Coming back to our main feature, sure, it was probably not one of Kubrick's very best movies but it was still one of the best heist movies I have seen. Indeed, back then, Kubrick was already displaying some impressive directing skills and his obsessive eye for details. The only flaw would be towards the end when most of characters are all killed within seconds during some massive shoot-out. Until that moment, everything was just so tight and so well put together but this scene didn't really work and felt like a rather cheap way to tie up most of the loose ends. Anyway, the whole thing was still pretty damned entertaining and spellbinding to watch though.

The Last Thing He Wanted
Notes: Following the impressive ‘Mudbound’, still probably one of the best movies ever released on Netflix, the expectations were pretty high regarding this follow-up from Dee Rees but, unfortunately, the damned thing turned out to be indeed so disappointing. Seriously, it has been a while since I have seen such a huge pretentious mess. Basically, it started out as a typical political thriller about the US intervention in the various conflicts taking place in Central America during the 80’s but, even if it was nothing really original, it did have some potential. But, then, the main character got involved with some kind of shady weapons deal originated by her own father which was just such a misguided idea, and, from this point, the whole thing just completely spiralled out of control. Indeed, the damned thing became murkier by the minute and, to be honest, it was rather difficult to make sense of what the hell was going on. To make things worse, Anne Hathaway provided one of her weakest performances in years. Of course, you could blame the material but Willem Dafoe still managed to be interesting. On the other hand, this guy would remain spellbinding no matter what they gave him to do. Concerning Ben Affleck, he wasn’t really convincing either but he had the luck that he was playing only a supporting character. Anyway, the damned thing was quite a misfire.
