Notes: I have always loved this documentary. The first time I saw it, I was about 16 years old and it really blew me away. Indeed, back then and still nowadays, I was a huge fan of the music they made in the mid-60ā€™s to the mid-70ā€™s, probably one of the most prolific periode in music history so it was just a blast to see this massive concert with all these legendary music artists involved. What I didnā€™t know is that there were also a lot of footage involving the audience and what was going on around the concert. Those bits were also really interesting and the whole thing is just an invaluable time bubble which made possible to more or less experience what it must have been to live in this age. I have seen it a couple of time since then (I think I have seen it at least once every decade) and it hasnā€™t lost his power after multiple viewings. The only thing that might have changed is that I donā€™t feel the urge to go back in time as, when I was a teenager, I thought it would be awesome to live at the time.

Notes: This flick must be one of the most underrated movies I have ever seen. Indeed, Paul Greengrass is above all known for the Bourne movies he has directed (indeed, those were some solid action flicks but nothing really amazing in my opinion) and everybody seems to forget this 'small' movie he made between those them. In my opinion, it is actually a real shame since this movie happens to be a real masterpiece. First of all, I thought this it was just really heartbreaking. Indeed, to watch this was a really powerful and harrowing experience. Above all, the real masterstroke was that they chose not to give any explanation about why the protagonists acted in anyway, victims or terrorists, and, as a result, it pretty much works like a captivating mirror showing the chaos in which our world is evolving. On top of that, the cast was solely composed of an unknown actors and no one stood out which made this shattering retelling of these tragic events even more captivating. With dealing with this kind of movies, my wife always argues 'Since they are all dead, how the hell do they know how it all went down?'. First of all, the makers spent a huge amount of time to make it as accurate as possible and, secondly, faithfulness is not everything, I'd rather had a story well told which happens to be fake than a straight story which happens to suck balls.

“Itā€™s another movie that, for some rather obscure reasons, I really wanted to watch for quite some time. “I wasn't really sure what to expect from this movie and, to be honest, I wonder how I actually ended up watching the damned thing. Platoon
Notes: In my opinion, it is pure and simply the best movie about the Vietnam war. It might even be my favorite war movie. I mean, there are some other pretty good movies about the Vietnam war, like ā€˜Full Metal Jacketā€™ for example, but this flick is just way better than the rest in my opinion. The making-off was already the stuff of legend. Indeed, the actors spent 2 weeks in a boot camp to get into the right ā€˜moodā€™ and Stone made sure that all the details were accurate. Stone, himself a Vietnam veteran, struggled for more than a decade to manage to make this movie (he even tried to cast Jim Morrison at some point) but it was eventually a huge financial and critical success. It won the Best Picture Academy award and Oliver Stoneā€™s career was finally launched for good. At the end of the day, it remains a really fascinating and sometimes heartbreaking war tale with some fully fledged characters. Hell, there is even Johnny Depp in itā€¦ What else do you need? Like I said before, after this movie, Oliver Stoneā€™s career was launched and he kept making some impressive pictures but they unfortunately never reached the level of this masterpiece.

12 Angry Men
Notes: Even though it is a rather old movie, it has not lost any of its strengths, thatā€™s for sure. Indeed, I think it took me maybe 5 minutes to get into this story as the whole thing turned out to be so spellbinding from the very start until the very end. In my opinion, it must be one of the purest movies I have ever seen. Indeed, you just had 12 guys stuck in a room, that's all what you will get and, in spite of these limitations, it was just completely entertaining. Basically, it is just about the power of words and acting. No effects, no tricks, just an incredible thoughtfull and intelligent picture. To be honest, Iā€™m not really convinced that a whole jury would change its mind like this if only one of the juror who would have some doubts but it was still so powerful with some fascinating and yet really realistic characters. Itā€™s interesting that this movie has always been considered as an example on how great and democratic the judicial system is but, in fact, I thought it was actually rather scary. Indeed, in my opinion, it shows how people very often take decision with their guts and how you can change their mind just by twisting the evidence.

Notes: In my opinion, it is probably the last great movie directed by Tim Burton, even maybe his best one ever. I mean, he has made some good flicks afterwards but never as inspired and inspiring as this one. The first time I saw it, I thought it was pretty good but I don't know why, the second time around, I thought it was just amazing and I was just blown away by the whole thing. The visuals, the directing, the performances,... Everything was pretty impressive. For once, the main character was not portrayed by Johnny Depp but by Ewan McGregor and I thought it was really refreshing (Especially when you see what Burton and Depp has done together between 2005 and 2012...). Furthermore, they had a really top cast and they all gave some solid performances. Above all, I thought it was such a deep, thougthful and inspiring tale which managed to intermingle life, death, love, truth, lie, and many other things. Since then, Tim Burton has spent his time adapting 2 famous books, a broadway show, a TV show and playing around with some puppets but I would be nice if he went looking again for some really original material.

A classic

“Since this movie is a major classic, of course, I was really eager to check it out. A Trip to the Moon (1902)
Notes: Itā€™s another movie I should definitely rewatch at some point. Well, if you might have some doubts regarding the fact if ā€˜The Great Train Robberyā€™ is amazing or not, there is absolutely no doubt that this is little short from Georges MĆ©liĆØs was and still is pretty awesome. Indeed, MĆ©liĆØs was pretty much the inventor of the special effects but, with this movie, probably without being really aware of it, he also delivered the first Science-Fiction flick and also the first animated feature. Of course, you might argue that the whole thing was pretty messy but it is also part of its charm and, above all, the fantasy and imagination displayed was just terribly inspiring. Eventually, itā€™s a shame MĆ©liĆØs didnā€™t get much praise when he was alive but there is no denying that the guy was one of the greatest masters in this Art which was pretty much in its infancy at the time.

The Birth of a Nation
Notes: Eventually, I must admit it, the first half was actually quite impressive. Indeed, it was a really intriguing depiction of the Civil war, displaying the impact on the people of the North and the South. There were also some very well made battle scenes, especially considering the fact that it is a 100 years old feature and it must have cost a fortune back in those days. However, in the second half, Griffith went completely apeshit on us and the whole thing became really despicable. First of all, the way black people were described was just really awful. Indeed, they are basically portrayed as evil, ignorant and completely useless. It was so disturbing that even at the time many people were really outraged. Furthermore, while the first part seemed pretty accurate historically speaking, in the second half, they gave an alternate version where the North and South were actually bonding against the black oppressor ruling in the South and the Ku Klux Klan was described as some kind of rightful resistance groupā€¦ Still, even though you donā€™t agree with Griffith's ideas, you have to bare in mind that the guy was actually a visionary and he has single-handedly created most of what we know of the cinematic language (intercutting between various scenes, establishing shots going to medium shots going to close-ups,ā€¦). When you see this movie, you donā€™t notice those tricks because you have seen them in 100s of movies that came afterwards but he actually invented all these things. So, from a technical and historical point of view, it is quite a valuable feature and it is usually considered as the birth of the modern American cinema but the ideas developed were just disgusting and the whole thing felt terribly misguided.
