The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009)
Notes: Since I kept hearing some really great things about this franchise, I was really eager to check it out. Well, I wasn't disappointed and I really loved the damned thing. Indeed, the directing was really solid, it was a very intense and entertaining story and, above all, Lisbeth Salander turned out to be one of the most fascinating characters I have ever seen. Indeed, not only Noomi Rapace gave a very strong performance and then became an international star thanks to this franchise, this character was just so well written, she was just mesmerizing to behold. Eventually, since I really loved these movies, I read all the books and, in fact, I think that Salander was even better in the movies because she was more mysterious. Anyway, it was a great thriller, not doubt about it. Eventually, only 2 years later, they would come up with a US remake which gave me some mixed feelings. Indeed, on one hand, since it was directed by David Fincher, it was obviously pretty awesome, but, on the other hand, it was also seriously pointless since this original Swedish was already amazing.

Notes: To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. It is considered by many as Terry Gilliam's Magnum Opus and even though it might not be my favorite movie he made (I think I actually prefer ‘12 Monkeys’), it is still pretty obvious that this movie completely deserves its prestigious reputation. Surprisingly, Roger Ebert really didn’t like it at all but he was an expection as the movie was really well received when it was released. Somehow, I still can understand Ebert though. Indeed, I really believe that Gillim is one of the most imaginative directors out there and for already more than 30 years but his movies are always confused and confusing and they can be sometimes rather frustrating to watch. Still, as usual with this director, the whole thing was visually impressive but there was also something quite spellbinding about this tale. Personally, I always had a weak spot for futuristic dystopian stories and this must be one of the most famous movies in this genre.

An average movie

“I have to admit that I’m not really a huge fan of Beyoncé and I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was available on Disney+, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, pretty much like ‘Homecoming’ that she released last year on Netflix, even though this movie” read more

Notes: Nowadays, we don’t hear much about him but there was a time when Costa-Gavras was one of the most highly regarded directors in the world. Personally, there was a time when I was quite a fan of his politically charged thrillers and it is with a great pleasure that I finally managed to watch ‘Z’ which is pretty much his magnum-opus and is even considered by many as one of the finest movies ever made. More than a decade after ‘Z’ and many other acclaimed features, Costa-Gavras finally got the opportunity to work in the USA and it was once again another spellbinding political thriller which even managed to won the prestigious Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival. Back then when it was released, it was pretty controversial since it was dealing with the Chilean coup of 1973 which was backed by the US government. I mean, sure, the whole structure was rather straightforward and this feature didn’t reach the heights of ‘Z’ but I though it was still a really solid, entertaining and very interesting movie.

A good movie

“Since I kept hearing some interesting things about this movie, I was quite eager to check it out. To be honest, I struggled a little bit to judge this movie. I mean, on one hand, it was visually so impressive, it felt like diving in so many Van Gogh paintings which would then come to live and this c” read more

Notes: To be honest, it has been ages since I have seen this flick and I should probably re-watch it at some point. After his first surreal experiment with Salvador Dali with ‘Un chien andalou’, Luis Buñuel was this time working on his own but he still managed to deliver another surrealist cult-classic and, from this point, Buñuel would be the master of the genre through his whole career. At least, this movie had some kind of a plot but it was hardly what Buñuel cared about. Indeed, the whole thing was pretty much a succession of really weird and sometimes pretty messed up scenes and it is hard to imagine a major director trying to bring up something like this nowadays. David Lynch might be the most obvious exception but the fact that he has stopped making movies for already more than a decade shows how hard it is, even impossible, to make something truly surreal in the current movie business. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, even though it might be an acquired taste, I thought it was quite fascinating to behold.

“Obviously, I wasn't expecting much from this flick, in fact, all the people involved, Paul Schrader, Nicolas Cage and Anton Yelchin, even advised people to avoid it but I still ended up watching this movie. A good movie

“Everyone who's slightly familiar with French football, at least, from my generation, has heard about Nicolas Anelka so I have to admit that I was quite eager to check this documentary. Indeed, pretty much from the very beginning of his career, Anelka became the black sheep of the French football, pr” read more
