Notes: One of Louis Malle's most heralded movies must be 'Au revoir les enfants' but even though it is a great flick, I actually preferred this other movie he made also about WWII. Basically, it is another classic French movie but, in my opinion, it was actually much more original and quite spellbinding to behold. Indeed, like the Vietnam war for American directors, the WWII has always been an endless source of inspiration for the French directors. So, by now, I have seen my share of French movies dealing with the subject and it is very rare to see a director trying a really different approach about this material but it was definitely the case here. Indeed, instead of telling the usual story of a heroic resistance fighter, they decided this time to focus on a rather despicable young man who was pretty much anything but a hero. As a result, you get a rather dark tale which was just quite fascinating.

The Terminator
Notes: When you rewatch this movie, it is rather funny to see that even before he got those monster budgets, James Cameron was already able to make some pretty awesome action scenes. I mean, 30 years later, the whole thing still holds up pretty good whereas most of the 80's movies look nowadays terribly cheesy. Of course, the story was rather preposterous but they still managed to create a fascinating mythology and a dreary vision of the future. On the other hand, there managed to provide many funny scenes and some great one liners along the way. Another masterstroke was that even though Schwarzenegger couldn't act whatsoever, since he was portraying an emotionless cyborg, it was just perfect. They even managed to fill in a romantic intrigue which wasn't annoying at all. Eventually, back then, action movies were R rated with a huge capital R and they weren't skirmish about those. To conclude, even though I'm usually not a great fan of action movies, I really loved this one and it is a great mix of action and SF.

5 Flights Up

An average movie

“To be honest, I wasnโ€™t expecting much from the damned thing but since it was produced by DreamWorks Animation, I thought I might as well check it out. Indeed, since this movie had been more or less a flop at the box-office and, with such a seemingly lame title, I was pretty sure it would be really” read more

The Grand Illusion
Notes: This is indeed a true masterpiece directed by Jean Renoir and I thought it was just brilliant and worked on so many levels. Indeed, not only it is a great war drama, one of the best ever made, but there are also some thrilling escaping schemes and even some hilarious bits here and there. One of the thing I appreciated the most is that there was no bad guy, on either side, which is something actually quite unique. Basically, they had to kill each other because it was their duty but without the war, they could have been friends. All those characters might seem rather stereotypical but they were all actually really 3 dimensional individuals and quite spellbinding to watch, especially von Rauffenstein portrayed by the great Erich von Stroheim. And, obviously, it is a movie which deals with illusions, that this war would be the last one, that all those people from different social backgrounds (working class, wealthy ( Jewish or not), aristocrats) would get along after the war as well as they did while they were fighting together and that the Aristocrats were not actually a dying specie. Basically, it is one of the best movies about the 1rst World War and simply one of the best movies produced back then.

A good movie

“To be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect from this flick but since I always had a weak spot for Matthias Schoenaerts, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, I have always been interested in alternative lifestyles, it was the first movie I saw dealing with the squatters in Amsterdam and only ther” read more

An average movie

“To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from this flick but since there was a really solid cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, it turned out to be rather difficult to judge this movie. I mean, sure, at least half of it was pretty much some garbage. However, there” read more

A good movie

“To be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I was quite eager to check it out. First of all, for Rupert Wyatt, this movie was such a weird career move. I mean, back in 2011, he had managed to relaunch the Planet of the Apes franchise with 'R” read more

Touch of Evil
Notes: Even though he did manage to direct arguably the greatest movie ever made, Orson Welles did have one very tumultuous career but some of his other directing efforts were still pretty damned amazing and this flick was definitely one of them. Like many other movies directed by the great master, he had once again some major issues with the studio producing this picture and they tempered with the end-results without consulting Welles who was fired during the post-production. Fortunately, at the end of the 90โ€™s , the movie was re-cut following his wishes with some tremendous results. To be honest, Iโ€™m not so sure the story was really amazing, it was pretty much a dark and murky film noir but it was definitely entertaining and, above all, the directing was really impressive. Indeed, it has one of the best openings ever, a legendary 10 minutes take, something only a director like Welles could pull off. Seriously, if only to see this marvelous scene, it is already worth watching the damned thing.
