An average movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Anthony Hopkins and since it was directed by Richard Attenborough, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, I had really a hard time to care about the damned thing. First of all, I have to admit” read more

Notes: In fact, the first time I saw the damned thing, it was at school when I was a teenager. Basically, like anyone else, I got to watch some movies with my teachers but, most of these attempts were rather disastrous. Indeed, instead of making us watch such modern classics like ‘Pulp Fiction’ or ‘Fight Club’, they would make us watch some old movies which were usually very poorly received. For example, one teacher made us watch ‘Johnny Got His Gun’ and even though it is in fact a great classic, can you imagine watching this with a classroom filled with 30 brainless teenagers? However, there was this one English teacher who actually did manage to show us some very old flicks and, surprisingly, those old classics turned out to be really interesting and entertaining. This movie turned out to be the best of the bunch. Indeed, for each class, we would watch like 15-20 minutes and then we would have a discussion about what actually happened and what could happen next. Eventually, the damned thing was so spellbinding that we would still talk about it even after the class during the break. On top of that, Gene Tierney was easily one of the best femmes fatal I had ever seen.

Notes: Even though Stanley Kubrick had already directed a few movies before, it was really with this directing effort that he started to display the extent of his talent, becoming one of the most exciting upcoming directors. From this movie and during the following 40 years, each and every movie he will deliver afterwards would turn out to be pretty much amazing which is something no other director has ever managed to achieve. Coming back to our main feature, sure, it was probably not one of Kubrick's very best movies but it was still one of the best heist movies I have seen. Indeed, back then, Kubrick was already displaying some impressive directing skills and his obsessive eye for details. The only flaw would be towards the end when most of characters are all killed within seconds during some massive shoot-out. Until that moment, everything was just so tight and so well put together but this scene didn't really work and felt like a rather cheap way to tie up most of the loose ends. Anyway, the whole thing was still pretty damned entertaining and spellbinding to watch though.

Notes: It turned out to be indeed seriously weak but it's not that it was really bad, it's just that it was so generic and predictable. In fact, the only thing that seemed remotely interesting to me were those 5 years during which the main character had disappeared and during which she turned herself into a lethal killing machine. Instead, you get the period before during which she was a rather average mother and the period after during which she was killing some thugs pretty much non-stop but both periods were pretty tedious, I'm afraid. To be honest, it was in fact some pretty lazy ass writing. I mean, how did she get such skills with absolutely no knowledge and no connections whatsoever? Anyway, I can understand that, after spending most of her career playing in some romantic-comedies and some family features, Jennifer Garner would be attracted by such an action movie and I don't think she was really so bad. It's a pity though that she chose to show up in some kind of NRA-sponsored vigilante fantasy during which, if you give a sh*tload of guns to the right person, a lot of bad guys will be executed.

My Beautiful Laundrette
Notes: By now, it is pretty obvious that Daniel Day-Lewis is one of the best actors ever. Indeed, he has recently won his 3rd Academy award for the Best actor for his awesome performance in ‘Lincoln’. However, I often wonder if the people raving about him have actually seen his older movies. Anyway, Day-Lewis basically gave here his breakthrough performance and even though this movie is nowadays pretty much forgotten, it is actually really good. The awesome thing, which was also pointed out by the great late Roger Ebert, is that the same year Daniel Day-Lewis also showed up in ‘A Room with a View’, another heralded movie released in 1985. The most striking thing is that those two roles were completely different (a street punk in 80’s UK and a repressed snobbish fellow in turn-of-the-twentieth-century England) and it was really something to see a complete unknown bursting into the scene with such a wide range, becoming right away a major player. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, it was actually supposed to be made for TV but was eventually released theatrically and became Stephen Frears’ first international success. Indeed, I thought it was a very interesting drama, dealing with various social issues but it was also an original and refreshing romance taking place in 80’s UK when Thatcher was Prime Minister, a rather grim and not really economic flourishing time.

Notes: I can’t believe I haven’t seen any movies directed by Akira Kurosawa for such a long time. A few years ago, I was doing a good job and ended up watching 13 of his movies but, by now, it has been a while since I saw another one of his movies. It is a real shame but maybe I will pick it up again later on. Anyway, this flick is probably not one of his most famous ones but I really loved it. As a matter of fact, this is the oldest movie directed by Akira Kurosawa that I have seen and, at the time when it was released, he was not yet really famous abroad (with no internet, it wasn’t really easy to reach a wide audience so rapidly as today) but it definitely changed with ‘Rashomon’ which would be released a year later and Kurosawa became suddenly overnight one of the most highly regarded directors in the world. Coming back to our main feature, it is a rather simple story but thanks to Kurosawa’s efficient directing and Toshiro Mifune’s fine performance, it was really a fascinating film noir.
