My Beautiful Laundrette
Notes: By now, it is pretty obvious that Daniel Day-Lewis is one of the best actors ever. Indeed, he has recently won his 3rd Academy award for the Best actor for his awesome performance in ‘Lincoln’. However, I often wonder if the people raving about him have actually seen his older movies. Anyway, Day-Lewis basically gave here his breakthrough performance and even though this movie is nowadays pretty much forgotten, it is actually really good. The awesome thing, which was also pointed out by the great late Roger Ebert, is that the same year Daniel Day-Lewis also showed up in ‘A Room with a View’, another heralded movie released in 1985. The most striking thing is that those two roles were completely different (a street punk in 80’s UK and a repressed snobbish fellow in turn-of-the-twentieth-century England) and it was really something to see a complete unknown bursting into the scene with such a wide range, becoming right away a major player. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, it was actually supposed to be made for TV but was eventually released theatrically and became Stephen Frears’ first international success. Indeed, I thought it was a very interesting drama, dealing with various social issues but it was also an original and refreshing romance taking place in 80’s UK when Thatcher was Prime Minister, a rather grim and not really economic flourishing time.

"@Monstermaster, in fact, his wife, Jackie Sandler, showed up in almost 20 of his movies but it is always such a minor part so it didn't seem really relevant."

An average movie

“To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Olivia Munn and Freida Pinto and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, eventually, I have to admit that it was actually not bad at all after all. Indeed, Sam Claflin and ” read more

Notes: I can’t believe I haven’t seen any movies directed by Akira Kurosawa for such a long time. A few years ago, I was doing a good job and ended up watching 13 of his movies but, by now, it has been a while since I saw another one of his movies. It is a real shame but maybe I will pick it up again later on. Anyway, this flick is probably not one of his most famous ones but I really loved it. As a matter of fact, this is the oldest movie directed by Akira Kurosawa that I have seen and, at the time when it was released, he was not yet really famous abroad (with no internet, it wasn’t really easy to reach a wide audience so rapidly as today) but it definitely changed with ‘Rashomon’ which would be released a year later and Kurosawa became suddenly overnight one of the most highly regarded directors in the world. Coming back to our main feature, it is a rather simple story but thanks to Kurosawa’s efficient directing and Toshiro Mifune’s fine performance, it was really a fascinating film noir.

A good movie

“Since I really loved ‘Hereditary’, I was really eager to check this follow-up from Ari Aster, especially since it had been very well received as well. Well, it was ambitious and the damned thing definitely had some potential and, during the first hour, it was just quite amazing to behold. Indeed” read more

Notes: Well, it was ambitious and the damned thing definitely had some potential and, during the first hour, it was just quite amazing to behold. Indeed, the intro was pretty intense and the whole thing looked great with an impressive immersive mood. Furthermore, Florence Pugh definitely delivered here a really strong performance, she displayed a great potential and she will be someone I will closely follow, that’s for sure. Unfortunately, even if I mostly enjoyed this movie, there was one thing that really bothered me though and it was the huge lack of character development, which was rather surprising coming from a movie lasting around 150 mins. It didn’t bother me during the first hour because I was assuming that there was still plenty of time left. However, it became more obvious from the moment these 2 elders jumped from a cliff. From then on, a succession of weird and unsettling scenes kept occurring but the characters remained mostly apathetic and unphased in spite of what was going on. As a result, since you didn’t get to know the characters and since they were basically turned into some kind of brainwashed puppets with no way to determine their own fate, it was rather hard to really care about what they were going through. Anyway, even if it wasn’t a complete home-run like ‘Hereditary’, there was still a lot to enjoy with this movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Kate Mara, I thought I might as well check it out. To be honest, I thought it was a rather weak mix of a standard thriller with a junkie drama and this mix never really worked in my opinion. It’s too bad becaus” read more

Notes: I really loved the damned thing and it turned out to be the best horror film I have seen for a very long time, no less than that. To be honest, it is definitely a slow-burn movie and, if you would expect a standard horror flick, you would be disappointed since at least 3/4 is actually a family drama. In fact, many viewers consider this movie as a drama but I can't remember the last time I watched a movie mixing these two genres so well. As a result, the dramatic parts managed to ground the story and the characters and you had more time to get to know and care about them. Still, the last 30 minutes, when the horror part finally really kicked in, were just so unsettling and pretty damned f*cking scary, it was just an awesome way to conclude this tale. Sure, you could argue that the outcome was after all rather predictable but it worked just fine for me. On top of that, I just loved that, even though some stuff was explained, they didn't chew out everything freaking details and the fact that some of it remained mysterious made the whole thing even more spellbinding to behold. And, of course, Toni Collette displayed once again that she is a terribly underrated character actress as she delivered here another really strong performance.

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Notes: I really liked this movie but the only low point for me was that it was very over-hyped before I watched it for the first time and my expectations were kind of huge. So, it wasn't as great as I hoped but it still quite impressive. Furthermore, there was some great directing, some very good acting and a very interesting story. At some point, I watched it again to make up my mind for good but, basically, I had the same feeling as the first time around. Above all, there are indeed some visually truly amazing scenes and just for them, you should check this flick. Furthermore, I really enjoyed the acting, especially by Michael Caine who was just awesome as usual. But the rest of the cast (Clive Owen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Julianne Moore, Danny Huston) was very good as well. Basically, they followed the current trend of showing the near future without too many fancy gadgets but with more similarity to our current world. In my opinion, it worked very well and the tone was very well set. Unfortunately, even though the story was intriguing, I was still not completely blown away, especially by this rather disappointing ending. It feels as if they spent loads of time creating this fascinating vision of the future but eventually they didn't know what to do with it. Anyway, it is still a modern classic.
