Notes: Once again, Steve McQueen really impressed me and it is not very often that you come across a director who managed to deliver so much quality with just 3 movies (It's too bad that I didn't care much for 'Widows'). The only thing Iâm worried is that the whole dreariness of his tales might become a gimmick at some point if he keeps throwing at us such dark and relentless dramas. Anyway, this time, he gave us a rather painful portrait of a man driven by his obsession and how his life constantly revolved around this obsession and nothing else. Since Iâm a rather obsessive person myself, it was rather confronting and I could definitely relate with him in the way that, even though his constant search for sex gave him a purpose, it also made him emotionless and completely unable to connect or socialize with other human beings. At least, junkies or alcoholists usually have an active (albeit sick) social life but the main character here chose not to have such a social life, probaby because of the shame he constantly felt. Once again, Michael Fassbender who is obviously one of the greatest actors of his generation gave a fearless performance and it is really astonishing that he wasnât even nominated at the Academy awards.

“I wasnât really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Gugu Mbatha-Raw and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, it wasnât really a strong story but, fortunately, Gina Prince-Bythewood managed to make the most” read more

johanlefourbe added 1 item to 1001 Movies ... my own version (1990's) list
Notes: At the end of the 90âs, following their winning of the Golden Palm at the Cannes, I discovered The Dardennes brothers with âRosettaâ but even though I thought it was indeed a decent drama, I canât say I was really blown by the whole thing. And, yet, after this bumpy start, those guys would turn out to be eventualy some of my favorite directors. Indeed, after the disappointing âRosettaâ, I still wanted to give those guys a 2nd chance so I decided to watch their previous directing effort. And, this time, I was finally really impressed. Once again, the whole thing was really raw and realistic but the big difference was that, this time, it was completely spellbiding to behold. Indeed, not only it was socially completely relevant but I was also impressed in the depth provided to the characters and I really cared about what they were going through. For the young JĂ©rĂ©mie Renier, it was a really impressive acting debut at only 15 years old, he would eventually have a decent career, working 3 times again with those guys (âLâenfantâ, âLe silence de Lornaâ, âLe gamin au vĂ©loâ).

“To be honest, I didnât have some really huge expectations regarding this movie but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even if I have to admit that the concept turned to have some potential after all, it could have been better developed though. I m” read more

johanlefourbe added 1 item to 1001 Movies ... my own version (1960's) list
Notes: To be honest, it has been ages since I have seen this flick and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. Anyway, even though it was released in 1969, in my opinion, it actually belongs to the great wave of amazingly inspired US movies from the 70âs such as âTaxi Driverâ, âDog Day Afternoonâ, âThe French Connectionâ, âChinatownâ, âThe Conversationâ, âThe Godfatherâ Part I and II, âOne Flew over the cuckoosâs nestâ, âAll the Presidentâs meâ, âAnnie Hall, âThe Deer Hunterâ, âApocalypse Nowâ, ⊠Indeed, back then , the box-office was not ruled by giant robots or super-heroes, it was ruled by such deep and dark features and this movie was a fine example. To be honest, I have never been really impressed by Jon Voight (seriously, in fact, the guy is nowadays more famous for being Angelina Jolieâs father than for his actual acting legacy) but he did make a few impressive movies and this movie is definitely one of them. And, of course, Dustin Hoffman was at the time one of the best actors in the world and he gave here one of his best performances.
