Wuthering Heights
Notes: To be honest, I'm usually not a huge fan of romantic costume dramas but I was actually surprised by how much I actually enjoyed this one. Indeed, it must be one of the gloomiest doomed love stories I have ever seen and, as a result, it was much more entertaining than most of the other movies in this genre. Basically, it is one of the most famous love stories but what made it so interesting was that the two main characters, Heathcliff and Cathy, never could make up their mind if they should passionately love or hate each other and, eventually, they basically destroyed one another and also the people that happened to be around. On top of that, the cast was really strong, especially Laurence Olivier who was at the top of his game back then. There were still a couple of things that slightly bothered me like the fact that Cathy's brother provided a very convenient villain or how easily Heathcliff went to America and came back as a rich man. Eventually, I wonder if this movie was a good adaptation and I might read the famous book it was based on at some point but I really enjoyed this flick.

Notes: Back in the 90’s, I had the pleasure to discover Akira Kurosawa’s movies and I became overnight a huge fan of his work. Of all his movies I have seen so far, this must be the most underrated coming from this director but it is definitely one of the best he has made, at least, as far as I’m concerned. Indeed, I think it is an amazing movie dealing with the slums in Japan and, even though it might sound weird, I really loved its bleak and realistic approach. Indeed, all his famous samurai features such ‘Rashomon’, ‘Yojimbo’ and ‘Shichinin no samurai' were of course pretty awesome but I think it was really neat to see this director working on something contemporary. Unsurprisingly, even though the Japanese master had some big expectations, this movie turned out to be a big box-office failure which isn’t really surprising considering its massive depressing tone. At the time, Kurosawa was already struggling and the blow was so huge at the time that he even attempted suicide.

Trainspotting
Notes: Either you like this movie or not, the fact remains that it is easily the most influential British movie released in the 90's. Even though I might prefer 'Shallow grave', I must admit that I was really impressed by the second movie directed by Danny Boyle. Indeed, there was some great directing, some great acting and it was plain and simply a very entertaining movie. Still, even though I think it is really good, I'm not sure if it is really that great though. This is a really personal point of view that you may not share at all but, personally, I think it has an ambivalent attitude towards drugs. Of course, there are some horrible parts shouting "KEEP OFF THE DRUGS" but, in some over scenes, they rather seem to have a grand time. Eventually, I think it is a very well made and fun movie with some great characters but, at the end of the day, the whole thing is actually pretty shallow. As a matter of fact, I have just re-watched it recently and, I must admit it, the 1st half was really hilarious, some of the funniest sh*t I have ever seen, which is quite striking when you consider the subject.

“To be honest, I had no idea what to expect from this flick and the only reason I actually ended up watching the damned thing was because it was available on Netflix and because another listal member advised me to check it out. I wonder if this movie had been an inspiration for the TV-show 'Airwolf' ” read more

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009)
Notes: Since I kept hearing some really great things about this franchise, I was really eager to check it out. Well, I wasn't disappointed and I really loved the damned thing. Indeed, the directing was really solid, it was a very intense and entertaining story and, above all, Lisbeth Salander turned out to be one of the most fascinating characters I have ever seen. Indeed, not only Noomi Rapace gave a very strong performance and then became an international star thanks to this franchise, this character was just so well written, she was just mesmerizing to behold. Eventually, since I really loved these movies, I read all the books and, in fact, I think that Salander was even better in the movies because she was more mysterious. Anyway, it was a great thriller, not doubt about it. Eventually, only 2 years later, they would come up with a US remake which gave me some mixed feelings. Indeed, on one hand, since it was directed by David Fincher, it was obviously pretty awesome, but, on the other hand, it was also seriously pointless since this original Swedish was already amazing.

Rescue Squad Mater

Rescue Squad Mater
Cast : Larry the Cable Guy What was it about? Mater tells Lightning McQueen about his previous job as a Fire Truck. My two cents: After 'Cars' came out, they made a few short features starring Mater as a main character and this one was directed by John Lasseter himself (in fact, he would direct most of the installments himself). To be honest, I never cared much about 'Cars' which ought to be one of the most underwhelming efforts by Pixar so I wasn't exactly the best audience for these shorts, I'm afraid. The very first one actually didn't even follow the usual template as Lightning McQueen would be involved pretty much right from the beginning. On top of that, Mater was not only a Fire Truck but also a doctor which made this short even more random than usual. My rating: 6/10

Notes: Nowadays, we don’t hear much about him but there was a time when Costa-Gavras was one of the most highly regarded directors in the world. Personally, there was a time when I was quite a fan of his politically charged thrillers and it is with a great pleasure that I finally managed to watch ‘Z’ which is pretty much his magnum-opus and is even considered by many as one of the finest movies ever made. More than a decade after ‘Z’ and many other acclaimed features, Costa-Gavras finally got the opportunity to work in the USA and it was once again another spellbinding political thriller which even managed to won the prestigious Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival. Back then when it was released, it was pretty controversial since it was dealing with the Chilean coup of 1973 which was backed by the US government. I mean, sure, the whole structure was rather straightforward and this feature didn’t reach the heights of ‘Z’ but I though it was still a really solid, entertaining and very interesting movie.

Notes: To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. It is considered by many as Terry Gilliam's Magnum Opus and even though it might not be my favorite movie he made (I think I actually prefer ‘12 Monkeys’), it is still pretty obvious that this movie completely deserves its prestigious reputation. Surprisingly, Roger Ebert really didn’t like it at all but he was an expection as the movie was really well received when it was released. Somehow, I still can understand Ebert though. Indeed, I really believe that Gillim is one of the most imaginative directors out there and for already more than 30 years but his movies are always confused and confusing and they can be sometimes rather frustrating to watch. Still, as usual with this director, the whole thing was visually impressive but there was also something quite spellbinding about this tale. Personally, I always had a weak spot for futuristic dystopian stories and this must be one of the most famous movies in this genre.
