This Is England
Notes: Shane Meadows managed to set his movie in a specific historical time and place (England in the 80’s) and he also managed to create some fascinating characters to watch. Basically, it shows how dreary the life was for some people in England during that time (is it really any better nowadays?) and how slowly some of them moved towards the National Front and their extreme right wing ideas. This movie displayed also an interesting notion which I wasn’t aware about those skinheads. Indeed, apparently, the skinheads were at first more about a specific lifestyle (music, clothing, haircuts,…) than some actual ideology but, at some point, when some of them needed a goal, a purpose, they shifted towards right-wing politics and, above all, violence towards minorities. However, this flick was not just about history and it also dealt with some very interesting 3 dimensional characters. I mean, instead of showing us some skinheads breaking havoc, they displayed that they had a very strong sense of community but also that they didn’t have much purpose and that they were terribly confused.

An average movie

“It is rather doubtful that we needed a new ‘Bad Boys’ instalment (isn’t it the case with most sequels though?) but since this movie had been fairly well received and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even though it was probably nothing really amaz” read more

The Deer Hunter
Notes: The 70’s are usually considered the Golden Age of American cinema and, at the time, the studios were willing to give a lot of money and some amazing amount of freedom to directors such as Francis Ford Coppola to do whatever they wanted. Well, Michael Cimino managed to single-handedly halt this blessed period with ‘Heaven’s Gate’ which turned out to be a disaster, financially and critically. His career would never recover and since then the American movie production has been ruled by blockbusters and it won’t change anytime soon. It is a real shame because the movie he made before, the movie he should be remembered for, was an amazing piece of work. Indeed, it is easily belongs to the best movies about the Vietnam war like ‘Apocalypse Now’, ‘Platoon’ and ‘Full Metal Jacket’. Basically, even though the scope and amount of details were quite impressive, Cimino managed to keep an amazing rhythm. After re-watching it again after so many years, I was impressed about its perfect flow, how it takes the time to show the life of these young men living a simple but happy and carefree life. Then, they were thrown in an alien land and basically go through hell. Obviously, the Russian roulette scenes have become really iconic and you can literally see Christopher Walken’s character mentally melting down in front of you.

Mephisto
Notes: It is nowadays a rather forgotten movie but I thought it was actually fascinating. In my opinion, it is one of the darkest dramas ever made about WWII I have ever seen and I thought that there was a really impressive amount of depth put in the characters, especially the main one who was quite fascinating. Indeed, the directing was very well done and, above all, Klaus Maria Brandauer gave probably the best performance of his career. Since then I have seen some other movies starring this guy but none of them really impressed me like this one. Anyway, he was really mesmerizing here, giving life to a fascinating but also flawed character. On top of that, this movie was also a very interesting meditation about Art and while watching this you might wonder, when you are dealing with Art in general, where does it start and where does it end and how far should you go in order to reach your artistic goals?

1917
Notes: Like many other heralded movies released in 2019, even if I really liked the damned thing, it didn’t really blow me away though. The point was that, sure, it was indeed visually and technically impressive. However, even though the story was decent enough, to be honest, it was nothing really original or amazing. At least, the plot wasn’t as ridiculous as it was in ‘Saving Private Ryan’ (a movie with an amazing intro but otherwise seriously overrated). Indeed, everything happening was fairly realistic but, again, there was nothing really ground-breaking about these 2 soldiers involved in some seemingly impossible mission to bring a crucial message. Furthermore, pretty much like Christopher Nolan with ‘Dunkirk’, Sam Mendes chose a realistic approach regarding his characters but, while this approach definitely has its merits, it also has its downside. I mean, on one hand, you really feel that you are dealing with some average soldiers, that they could be anyone, the boy-next-door, yourself, your brother,… However, on the other hand, you do end up with some ‘average’ characters who were barely charismatic and who didn’t have any real distinctive features or personalities. Still, there is no doubt that the visuals by Roger Deakins (easily one of the best cinematographers at work nowadays) were just so impressive and it is possible that I would have enjoyed this movie more if I had seen it on the silver screen and not at home.

Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)
Notes: Through the years, the Academy has made some poor choices but, lately, I have to admit that they finally got it right and this movie was definitely a worthy winner. Eventually, I still think that 'Boyhood' was in fact a better choice but this flick was really not far behind and I liked it a lot. To be honest, I thought that the actual play was in fact about Birdman so I was expecting something slightly different but that wasn't a big deal, in the contrary. What we got here was a very smart, very well directed movie with some really impressive performances. Indeed, it was filled with some very long takes and you can imagine that it must have been rather daunting for the actors involved (apparently, Inarritu was actually eager to shot the whole thing in one single take but the actual merit of this rare technic is rather questionable if you ask me). For Inarritu, it is the crowning of an already impressive and pretty much flawless career and, for all the actors involved (Michael Keaton, Edward Norton, Emma Stone, Naomi Watts), it was a definitely a very high point in their career.
