A good movie

“In fact, I wanted to see the original version first but since this remake was directly available thanks to my TV provider, I thought I might as well check it out anyway. Well, if you thought that ‘Black Swan’ gave a creepy look on the dance world, I think that Luca Guadagnino managed to deliver ” read more

Notes: Eventually, I was really impressed by the damned thing. To be honest, I have no actual interest in mountain climbing whatsoever and I believe it is one of those hazardous hobbies which seem rather pointless to me. On top of that, since both men were there to tell this story 20 years later, then you pretty much knew beforehand how it would all end. And, yet, in spite all this, it was just fascinating and sometimes even rather excruciating to see. I mean, at first, when they went up there, it seemed really hard but still doable but, as there was still more than one hour of running time, I was pretty sure that something pretty nasty would happen at some point. And, indeed, when those climbers went down, it turned to be a real nightmare. I won’t go into details but what happened up there was just incredible and one of the greatest tales of human survival I have ever seen.

Notes: To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. Sometimes, I do wonder if Krzysztof Kieslowski is really famous among the Listal users and that's a shame because he is responsible of some of the most striking movies of the 90's and 80's. I can’t believe he passed away already 20 years ago and, in fact, I should myself watch many more of his movies. On top of that, I was probably too young to really appreciate his Three colors trilogy and I hope I will give it a second chance at some point in the future. Right now, I actually preferred this one which is my favorite of his movies so far. Indeed, I thought this tale was just mesmerizing. I have to confess that probably most of the symbolism went over my head but I just loved the mood and I felt a great connection with this story and the characters involved (something I was slightly missing with the Three colors trilogy). Concerning Irène Jacob, back then, it seemed that she would become the next great French actress but aside from the massive 2 classics she made with this great master, her career turned out to be rather underwhelming after all.

The Tree of Life (2011)
Notes: Basically, this movie started with an awe inspiring introduction which I cannot describe and then the movie went very theological and metaphysical. I guess that since I'm not that smart, I was kind of losing track of the whole thing but then Mallick came again and again with some amazing sequences really beautifully shot with some awesome music, and then I was again completely fascinated by the moving pictures in front of me. I know, this review sounds rather cryptical but so was this movie. Watching this movie was like going to a museum and staring at a masterpiece. Nothing is explained to you but you get some emotional reaction to it, right there in your gut, a reaction which will be really personal and someone else may have a completely different response to it. In my opinion, Brad Pitt gave an amazing performance and I don't think I have ever seen any children giving such impressive performances before, just mind-blowing. And of course, Malick is an amazing director, actually he is not, he is an amazing artist, something rare nowadays in the movie industry. This movie touched me very deeply and many times, I thought I was watching myself when the father was messing up his family or when the older boy was getting messed up.

An average movie

“I’m well aware that this franchise has a rather lousy reputation but, to be honest, I have to admit that ‘London Has Fallen’ was slightly better than its predecessor so I thought I might as well check this 3rd instalment.  Well, unfortunately, this sequel turned out to be a huge step back, I” read more

Notes: I thought that this movie was totally heartbreaking but also very inspiring. If you think you have a difficult life, you should really check this movie. Indeed, it is a massive wake-up call and made me really think about my own life and how lucky I have been so far. On top of that, it also works as a really exciting thriller/sport feature. Indeed, it is not just about those guys trying to give some meaning to their life, it is also about their next big tournament and if they will win the damned thing, even if they have to face their previous coach. Obviously, since it was a massive critical success, it was nominated for the Academy Award for the Best Documentary Feature but even though it should have won in my opinion, it lost to ‘March of the Penguins’ which was maybe a huge box-office hit but I thought it was actually rather overrated.

A very good movie

“I already saw this movie but, since it is rather complex, I thought I might as well check it out again. Well, I’m glad I gave it a second chance since I was much more able to have a good grip on the whole thing. Eventually, it is quite relentless and even heartbreaking to watch.
