Midnight Cowboy
Notes: To be honest, it has been ages since I have seen this flick and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. Anyway, even though it was released in 1969, in my opinion, it actually belongs to the great wave of amazingly inspired US movies from the 70’s such as ‘Taxi Driver’, ‘Dog Day Afternoon’, ‘The French Connection’, ‘Chinatown’, ‘The Conversation’, ‘The Godfather’ Part I and II, ‘One Flew over the cuckoos’s nest’, ‘All the President’s me’, ‘Annie Hall, ‘The Deer Hunter’, ‘Apocalypse Now’, … Indeed, back then , the box-office was not ruled by giant robots or super-heroes, it was ruled by such deep and dark features and this movie was a fine example. To be honest, I have never been really impressed by Jon Voight (seriously, in fact, the guy is nowadays more famous for being Angelina Jolie’s father than for his actual acting legacy) but he did make a few impressive movies and this movie is definitely one of them. And, of course, Dustin Hoffman was at the time one of the best actors in the world and he gave here one of his best performances.

A classic

“Since I kept hearing some really good things about this flick, I was really eager to check it out. In fact, the first time I heard about it was more than 30 years ago. Indeed, back then, one of my best friends and his two older brothers who were really into this kind of sports were really hyped by t” read more

Sleuth (1972)
Notes: In fact, I first saw the remake directed by Kenneth Branagh and, even though this remake didn’t get much love, I thought it was a decent watch. Well, I understand now why most of the viewers didn’t care for Branaggh's version though since this classic was indeed miles better. I’m also glad that I saw this remake such a long time ago because, this way, I didn’t remember some crucial details. However, I wish I did see the damned thing with some subtitles as the dialogues were amazing but sometimes slightly difficult to follow, especially since English is not my mother-tongue. Anyway, the whole thing was just fascinating with 2 great (or should I say 3) performances from Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine who were both at the top of their game. The only minor issue I had was that, while Michael Caine looked amazing as Inspector Doppler, I thought he didn’t conceal enough his voice and it was pretty easy to recognize him after all but it wasn’t a big deal. Eventually, even though you spend more than 2 hours with only 2 actors in one single location, it was yet just so fascinating and spellbinding to behold.

A good movie

“I had no idea what to expect from this flick but since it was directed by Charlie Kaufman and since it was available on Netflix, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, as usual with Kaufman, it turned out to be an extremely challenging movie. Basically, it is the kind of movies where nothing seems” read more

An average movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have been following Woody Allen’s career for more than 20 years, I was still quite eager to check it out. Well, eventually, even this movie wasn’t one of his worst, it wasn’t one of his best either. I mean, the whole thing was p” read more

Dunkirk
Notes: It was another box-office hit for Christopher Nolan which is even more remarkable since you wouldn't expect a movie dealing with WWII to be able to compete with your usual summer blockbusters. Still, to be honest, I don't think it will be remembered as one of his best movies, at least, not by me. I mean, sure, I was glad that he was at last doing something else than a super-hero flick or some high-concept science-fiction thriller, but at the end of the day, even if it looked different, it was still yet another thriller, something he has been doing through his whole career. Furthermore, I have seen my share of movies dealing with this conflict and, even though it was still a really good movie, I have seen better to be honest. On top of that, I didn't care much for the mixed chronology and it didn't help that none of the involved characters was developed at all. Still, from a technical point of view, it was really impressive and I have to admit that this movie was still quite spellbinding.

The Last Waltz
Notes: To be honest, before watching this movie, I didn't even know 'The Band' but I did know Martin Scorsese and it was a good enough reason for me to check this flick. For years, I had heard that it was the best concert movie ever made and after watching it, I must say indeed that he does deserve its reputation. Indeed, back then, music was really about actually playing some music with some real instruments. Nowadays, most of the work is actually done by some producers in the control room and you can never be sure that what you hear is the real thing or someting coming out from some computer. The other thing that impressed me was that even though those guys were separating, you could feel that they still enjoyed playing together. It was just so refreshing compared to other bands which kept playing for decades together for no good reasons or other bands where everybody got to each other's throats in some ugly split. Furthermore, the list of guests (Neil Young, Neil Diamond, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters, Ringo Starr, Ron Wood,...) was just really impressive as well and the whole thing was just downright impressive on a music level.
