The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Notes: I have seen this movie so many times, I even saw the damned thing in the movie theater when it was released and it has never lost its appeal. Basically, it is a gorgeous picture at the same time dark and bleak but also joyful and charming. However, it is slightly annoying that Tim Burton got most of the credit concerning this picture when in fact, Henry Selick is the one who actually directed the whole thing. Eventually, in my opinion, Henry Selick is the one responsible for his greatness whereas Tim Burton was too busy working on other projects to actually directing it ... Selick should be the one credited for this jewel, not Burton. Of course, I have to admit it, you can see Tim Burton's influence as he provided many sketches in order to create the characters. Anyway, it is one of the darkest fairy tales I have ever seen, it is very bold and you should probably don't show it to young children. Anyway, it is visually mind-blowing, the characters are fascinating and I even liked the songs . In this genre, it is the best movie of its kind.

Good Bye Lenin!
Notes: I remember it very well, when this movie was released, it was a critical success so I had some pretty big expectations the first time around. Well, Iโ€™m glad I watched it again because I enjoyed it even more. Indeed, the concept might seem silly and you can imagine that an American movie would have gone for the cheap laughs but I was surprised by how subtle the damned thing turned out to be. Sure, to see the fall of the Berlin wall and of Eastern Germany in general from this perspective was quite interesting and the clash between the Eastern and Western world as well and it was all quite funny and entertaining but, actually, they went really deeper than that. Basically, it might be one of the very few comedies (maybe even the only one?) which was based on a lie and it still actually worked. Indeed, it is most of the time a useless gimmick because the reason a lie is used are almost always worthless but, in this case, it actually did make sense. Of course, it was completely impractical and fairly ridiculous but the reason why was actually sound and, above all, the main character did it for love and completely regardless of his self-interest. Furthermore, I also loved the tone and it might be one of the most melancholic comedies I have ever seen. Seriously, this mixing of drama and comedy was pretty much flawless.

“To be honest, I wasnโ€™t really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved and since it sounded like an interesting story, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even though it turned out to be indeed an incredible story with a huge historical impact, it di” read more

Schindler
Notes: Even if Steven Spielberg has definitely made many very entertaining flicks in the past , I always had been kind of annoyed by his movies because they are most of the times not challenging enough, or too "nice" for my taste (For example, 'ET' is a good movie but the alien and the children tend to get on my nerves). However, with this movie, Spielberg finally displayed his skills showing a terribly bleak and dark tale. Of course, you could say that Schindler is a little too heroic but you can't argue that Amon Goethe is one of the most despicable and yet fascinating bad guys seen on the silver screen. The directing was great, the cast was awesome and the story was completely heartbreaking. It was so good that the Academy finally HAD to give Spielberg his Oscar which he had been denied for so many years.

Unidentified Flying Mater
Cast : Larry the Cable Guy What was it about? It was the last one of these shorts that I saw and, even though I was by then pretty much done with this concept, I have to admit that this one was actually fairly enjoyable. Indeed, even though the story was again seriously random, this little tale actually did work. On top of that, Mator was a solid character and his relationshiop with Mater was pretty neat which is rather impressive since the whole thing only lasted 4 mins. My two cents: My rating: 7/10

Kick-Ass
Notes: Kick-Ass is so much fun. Just the title cracks me up! Still, even so, I don't think it is a masterpiece though. Indeed, Hit-Girl didn't really work for me. Not that I was shocked or anything but what I loved in this movie is that the main character was a loser without super power. Indeed, I really loved this concept but then came Hit-Girl fighting just like a super hero... Anyway, when it was released, this movie rapidly reached a cult status. Indeed, the first half is just great. When they focused on this average teenager who tries to be a super-hero, the whole thing was just hilarious and the realistic approach was great. The directing was also awesome and the cast was really neat. Still, I really hard a hard time with Hit Girl. Not to blame Moretz who gave a tremendous performance at such a young age but I failed to see how it was 'cool' to see a 12 year old girl shooting a whole bunch of guys. Eventually, she even gets beat up which was quite inevitable and also pretty discomforting. Furthermore, like I said before, the way she completely whacks everyone makes her look totally unbelievable and completely contradicted the realistic approach they chose. Still, even though it might not be as 'awesome' as many seem to think, it still remain a very well made, original and intriguing super-hero flick.
