A Few Good Men

Zero for Conduct (1933)
Notes: Jean Vigo is one of these mythic movie directors who managed to deliver only one masterpiece (ā€˜Lā€™Atalanteā€™) before dying very young. Vigo did also manage to direct a few shorts and this one is probably the most famous one. Well, to beginning with, I just loved this title. I mean, even though this movie was made 60 years before I myself went to junior high-school in France, I completely could identify myself with these kids who felt completely misunderstood by the school and by the establishment in general. In their case, it was actually much worse though since, at least, I didnā€™t have to sleep there. This movie also displayed the unrest and melancholy that you can experience at this age, when you start to realize that your games are becoming childish and that you discover that the grown-ups around you are not so great after all. So, the approach was definitely quite realistic and Iā€™m pretty sure that this movie must have been a major inspiration for FranƧois Truffaut when he made ā€˜Les quatre cents coupsā€™ 25 years later. However, in spite of Vigoā€™s realistic approach, there was also a few seriously surrealist moments, the kind of wild combination you would see only back then when they were still experimenting on how to make a movie and these few surrealist bits made the whole thing even more unique and even quite poetic.

A very good movie

4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007)
Notes: Since this movie won the prestigious Golden Palm at Cannes film festival, I was really eager to check it out. As expected, it was really a depressing movie and Iā€™m not sure if I will re-watch it any time soon but, to be honest, I don't really mind. Obviously, if you're looking for a feel-good entertaining movie, you should look somewhere else though. Indeed, there is no doubt that that this story was quite heartbreaking. Of course, it was a drama but, as a matter of fact, I thought it actually felt almost like a thriller sometimes as I was really wondering most of the time what was going to happen next. The directing was not flashy at all, it was in fact very sober but it was probably the best way to handle this subject. After this movie, Cristian Mungiu went to direct some other movies which were also very well received but I havenā€™t seen them to be honest and, at the time, there was some claim about a New Romanian Cinema but, to be honest, we donā€™t hear much from this anymore.

The Draughtsman
Notes: To be honest, I wonder how I actually ended up watching this movie but I think it was because the critic in the TV mag was pretty good. Anyway, even though I didnā€™t really expect it, it turned out to be a major milestone in my movie watching. Indeed, back then, I was much younger, I had never seen anything like this before and I was seriously blown away by the whole thing. I think that the first thing that impressed me with this movie was its visual aspect. Basically, it deals with art and painting and it is probably the movie which made the best connection with the painting art I have ever seen. Furthermore, there was also a mesmerizing surrealist vibe with this movie and even though the plot and the characters were rather murky, it was one of the most spellbinding movies I have ever seen. Concerning Peter Greenaway, it was his breakthrough feature film, it would be also his first movie I managed to watch and I became right away a big fan of his work.

City Lights
Notes: To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie, like all the major masterpieces directed by Charles Chaplin, I should definitely re-watch it at some point. Anyway, I have noticed that, according to IMDb, this movie is supposed to be the best one delivered by this great master but I personally prefer 'Modern Times' and 'The Great Dictator' because I believe they are socially and historically more relevant than this movie which I considered as merely a romantic comedy. Back then, Chaplin was apparently facing some extreme pressure to make the film as a talkie, but his popularity and power in Hollywood were such that he was able to release the film as a silent feature (with recorded music though) at a time when the rest of the American motion picture industry had converted to sound. Just a moment ago, I mentioned that it was merely a romantic comedy but I should add that it is also probably one of the very best one in this genre though. Indeed, it is funny, beautiful and really poetic.

A good movie

“To be honest, I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it seemed to have a decent reputation and since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, I was well aware that Dalton Trumbo had been blacklisted and that he had kept working using fr” read more

Boudu Saved from Drowning (1932)
Notes: Since Jean Renoir is one of the best French directors ever, I was really curious to check out this flick. It also stars Michel Simon who was back then the best actor in France. Eventually, I thought it was pretty good but not Renoir's best work. Indeed, I thought the story was a little too simplistic, there is no plot and there are only a few characters developped. I know that many people would said that it is actually the strength of this movie that because it is simple that is why it is so great but I wasn't really blown away by the whole thing. The best thing about it is how relevant it is, almost 90 years after it was made. Indeed, the different attitudes of people coming from different social classes, the way norm and values dictate our behavior, it was really spot on here with this movie. They made a remake a few years ago starring GƩrard Depardieu, another giant of the French cinƩma, I haven't seen it yet but I heard it was not really that good. The acting was pretty efficient here above all by Michel Simon who was pretty hilarious.

Forbidden Games
Notes: Eventually, it actually turned out to be definitely one of the saddest movies I have ever seen. First, they gave us this opening with this famous melancholic guitar tune which kept coming back throughout the whole thing. Then, in the very first scene, there was this 5 year old girl holding her dead dog while both her parents were being shot by a plane. I mean, it was just 5 minutes into the movie and I was already a total wreck...Then, they kept bringing again and again some heartbreaking scenes and, as expected, the end was also completely devastating. A few weeks before, I actually saw 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas' and everybody seemed to think that it was a major tearjerker but even though it was indeed pretty heavy, compared to this feature, it was actually a piece of cake. A part from that, the acting by the kids was just really impressive and I also enjoyed the writing. Indeed, all the characters were three dimensional and felt really genuine in the sense that they were sometimes nice and sometimes pretty nasty, even the two children. I have to admit that I didn't care much about the whole cross stealing thing but, a part from that, this movie was really impressive.

In the Heat of the Night
Notes: Since this movie won the Academy Award for the Best Picture, I was really eager to check it out but, for some reasons, it took me about 10 years to finally see the damned thing. Well, I can tell you, it was definitely worth the wait and this movie completely deserved its stellar reputation. Indeed, it was such a powerful movie and it is not very often that I saw a movie who felt so historically important. Indeed, there are tons of movies like ā€˜Philadelphiaā€™ who explores some important issues but at least a decade too late while this movie was made when the segregation was still going strong in the South of the USA. Indeed, the whole thing was just so intense, especially the first half which was just so spellbinding to behold. Itā€™s interesting that, the very same year, Sidney Poitier made also ā€˜Guess Who's Coming to Dinnerā€™ which is also considered a classic but this movie felt really outdated but not this one. Indeed, from the moment they find Tibbs waiting for his train, you could feel the tension, the actual clash of 2 different worlds and you could feel that the whole situation might go south at any moment.
