An average movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, to be honest, I turned out to be actually slightly disappointing. I mean, I have to admit it, the concept was interesting. Indeed, it was the first time I saw a ” read more

Notes: I have already seen this flick a couple of times but I thought it was time to watch it with Nick, my step-son. Honestly, I think he was pretty bored during most of the duration, because, let's face it, in contrary to what Sylvester Stallone did for the rest of his career, it is not really an action flick. Indeed, except for the last 10 minutes with the final showdown, the rest of the movie is actually a rather grim drama. Nick is not really big on dramas but I thought it was actually pretty good. It was also rather funny to see Stallone having so many dialogues especially compared to what he did in the last 30 years during which he has been usually blowing up some stuff or demolishing someone's face. Personally, I always had some mixed feelings about the whole thing. I mean, on one hand, it is indeed a pretty good flick, uncannily paralleling Stallone's whole life and it is the ultimate underdog story which has been copied 100's times afterwards. On the other hand, I'm sorry, but there are so many better movies out there. I mean, come on, the same year 'Taxi Driver' was released and was snubbed by the Academy awards in favor of this movie and it remains painful even 40 years later. Anyway, even if I don't think it is really amazing, it is still a classic though.

A Fish Called Wanda
Notes: I remember it very well, as a kid growing up in the 90’s, I noticed that people kept mentioning this movie saying that it was a hilarious cult-classic. With this in mind, I had some rather high expectations concerning this movie. Well, at some point, I finally watched the damned thing but, to be honest, I thought it was quite entertaining but not much more than that, I’m afraid. I mean, I always had a weak spot for John Cleese and I have to admit that he was very funny as usual but even though many might argue that Kevin Kline was also awesome in this movie, I always thought that he was actually seriously annoying as he played one of his typical hysterical characters. During the whole duration, everybody kept telling Otto that he was stupid, which was completely true, but I didn't see what was so funny about a guy who keeps doing and saying some really stupid things all the time. Furthermore, the plot and the characters involved were not bad but I never thought it was really hilarious and, even after re-watching the damned thing, I still ended up with the same feeling. Anyway, even if I’m not a huge fan, it is still a decent comedy though.

A good movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. I actually saw another movie about Ned Kelly starring Heath Ledger but it was ages ago and, to be honest, I don’t remember much about it. Anyway, in this case, ” read more

Notes: Somehow, it took me many years to watch this classic and, considering its impressive reputation, I had some rather high expectations. Eventually, even though I did enjoy it, I can’t say I was really blown away by the whole thing though. I guess, it is one of those cases that you keep hearing about a classic for many years but when you finally watch it, there is no way it will fulfill all your wild dreams. I mean, it is definitely a fun flick, no doubt about it, but somehow, I never really cared about the characters. It is like John Belushi, a guy who has become a legend since then, when in fact he made only 7 movies before dying and only 2 of them (‘Animal House’ and this movie included) were actually good. Well, I don't think that ‘Animal House’ was really that great either so I don’t really get all the fuss about this guy. Anyway, in my opinion, even though this movie tries to be wild and all, basically, it is pure and simply a musical with some pretty cool music and some rather chaotic scenes but not much more than that, I’m afraid. I don’t know, maybe I was in the wrong mood when I watched it and maybe I should give it another shot at some point. Still, even though it didn’t really blow me away, it is a classic.

"No worries. When making this list, I think I chose 'Contra III' back then because it was the official name of the game but, you're right, I bought 'Super Probotector' at the time."

Yes Day
Notes: It turned out to be one of these movies arguing that raising kids has become such an impossible task nowadays and, to be honest, I always have a hard time to relate with such movies. The fact that I got 3 very easy children to raise doesn’t help I guess. Anyway, in my opinion, raising children is not really about when you should say ‘No’ and when you should say ‘Yes’, it’s actually more about building trust between you and your child. So, you can see I didn’t care much for the whole set-up but, at least, it was nice that it was dealing with a bilingual family, even if they did actually very little with this aspect after all. Still, I have to admit that there was something pretty neat to see these kids calling all the shots for one single day. However, for some reasons, they completely derailed the whole thing during the 3rd act by sending the parents to jail for some rather dubious reasons. Finally, the tone was just so feather light. Indeed, the parents were nice, the kids were nice, there was barely a conflict even at the beginning of the movie and I get that it was probably done on purpose but it would have been more interesting if the characters would have been slightly more complex.
