An average movie

“To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much from this flick but since it was directed by Stephen Frears, I thought I might as well check it out anyway. Well, even though I thought it would be something terribly corny, I have to admit that it was not so bad after all. I mean, I still didn’t care much f” read more

Halloween
Notes: It is arguably the most famous movie directed by John Carpenter and it is the ultimate slasher flick. I mean, it is basically the blue-print for all the slashers that came afterwards. I think it is rather funny that some viewers would say that it is rather slow and not really gory or scary. Before watching this, you have to keep in mind that it was made more than 40 years ago and that it was actually independently financed with a very small budget. To be honest, I have to admit that the plot was very basic and neither Laurie, the victims, Michael Myers or the doctor chasing him were really developed. Still, it was really good and the thing I probably enjoyed the most was the music. Composed also by John Carpenter himself, it is almost as legendary as the movie itself and there is a pretty good chance that even though you haven't seen the movie, you would probably recognize the tune anyway. It was also Jamie Lee Curtis debut and she would become the ultimate scream queen for the following 5 years.

The Artist
Notes: Following all the hype surrounding this feature which eventually managed to win the Best Picture Academy Award (a historical event for a French movie), I obviously had to watch this movie at some point. Well, eventually, even though I did like damned thing, to be honest, I can't say I was really blown away. I don’t know, maybe it had to with the fact that, to the contrary of many viewers who loved this movie, I have seen my share of old silent movies and even though I'm a huge fan of silent comedies, especially the ones starring Charlie Chaplin, I always had a hard time enjoying silent dramas and this one was not an exception. On top of that, the story was entertaining enough but it wasn't anything I haven't seen before. However, I have to admit it, it was still an original and inspiring experiment. Indeed, the directing was really solid, they gave a good feeling about this time period and the performances were really good. I was above all impressed by Jean Dujardin who was just amazing and he really deserved to receive an Academy award for his tremendous work.

The Young Girls of Rochefort
Notes: This movie features a (very) young Catherine Deneuve and her less famous sister, Francoise Dorleac. Dorleac also had a promising career, she even worked with Roman Polanski in ‘Cul-de-sac’ and Francois Truffaut in ‘La Peau douce’. Unfortunately, she tragically died in a car accident at 25 years old. Anyway, I thought it was pretty awesome to see Catherine Deneuve at such a young age. Indeed, she is a terrific actress and she was already awesome back then, the more movies I watch with her, the more she fascinates me. But what about the movie itself ? Well, it was pretty good, with some nice songs but, to be honest, it was obviously not my thing. I mean, there was barely any plot and, as usual with musicals, the whole thing turned out to be terribly fluffy. I know, it is supposed to be that way but I always find it rather tedious. Still, it is a fun and very well made musical and Deneuve and her sister were terribly charming.

Force of Nature
Notes: Well, the (only) interesting with this movie was that, for a very long time, Mel Gibson was ruling the A list and, at some point, Emile Hirsch and Kate Bosworth got close to get there but the fact that they nowadays get involved in such generic and borderline worthless action flicks shows the current bad shape of their respective careers. In fact, with such a title and since it was taking place during a hurricane, I thought it would be a disaster movie but, in fact, it turned out to be some kind of very cheap version of ‘Die Hard’ taking place in Puerto Rico. By the way, you might wonder why the action was taking place in Puerto Rico since all the main characters were actually American. It’s like the hurricane, it had actually so little impact on the generic plot, it could have been actually easily removed. To make the whole thing even more random and half-baked, you had also some stolen Art by the Nazis and also some mysterious beast. Concerning this ‘beast’, it was rather disappointing that it didn’t have more impact on this tale but when it finally showed up for a split second, it actually seemed to only be a rather large dog after all. Concerning the actors involved, I’m afraid Emile Hirsch was not really convincing but Mel Gibson was not much better and gave here a rather weak performance. Eventually, Kate Bosworth was probably the only one who was not bad but she wasn’t helped by this poor material.

Dick Johnson Is Dead
Notes: To be honest, even though I did like this movie, I have to admit that I was actually expecting more from the damned thing. I mean, Dick Johnson seemed to be a great guy and I’m glad for Kirsten Johnson that she seemed to have such a great relationship with both her parents but I’m afraid I was never really grabbed by her movie. I was also not sure about the final act. It’s not that I thought it was shocking, it’s more that it all felt rather misleading to me. I mean, Kirsten Johnson might argue that she made this movie to help her father to prepare for the end of his life but I think it was pretty obvious that he did it more as a favour to her then actually for himself. In fact, in my opinion, this project was made partially out of a sense of guilt from Kirsten Johnson who mentioned that she didn’t have any footage of her mother when she was still Alzheimer free. As a compensation, she then decided to make a full-length feature focusing on her father before he became seriously demented. Still, there is no denying that the damned thing was really original, in fact, it was a unique picture, and only therefore, it gets some extra points from me.

Rocky
Notes: I have already seen this flick a couple of times but I thought it was time to watch it with Nick, my step-son. Honestly, I think he was pretty bored during most of the duration, because, let's face it, in contrary to what Sylvester Stallone did for the rest of his career, it is not really an action flick. Indeed, except for the last 10 minutes with the final showdown, the rest of the movie is actually a rather grim drama. Nick is not really big on dramas but I thought it was actually pretty good. It was also rather funny to see Stallone having so many dialogues especially compared to what he did in the last 30 years during which he has been usually blowing up some stuff or demolishing someone's face. Personally, I always had some mixed feelings about the whole thing. I mean, on one hand, it is indeed a pretty good flick, uncannily paralleling Stallone's whole life and it is the ultimate underdog story which has been copied 100's times afterwards. On the other hand, I'm sorry, but there are so many better movies out there. I mean, come on, the same year 'Taxi Driver' was released and was snubbed by the Academy awards in favor of this movie and it remains painful even 40 years later. Anyway, even if I don't think it is really amazing, it is still a classic though.

A Fish Called Wanda
Notes: I remember it very well, as a kid growing up in the 90’s, I noticed that people kept mentioning this movie saying that it was a hilarious cult-classic. With this in mind, I had some rather high expectations concerning this movie. Well, at some point, I finally watched the damned thing but, to be honest, I thought it was quite entertaining but not much more than that, I’m afraid. I mean, I always had a weak spot for John Cleese and I have to admit that he was very funny as usual but even though many might argue that Kevin Kline was also awesome in this movie, I always thought that he was actually seriously annoying as he played one of his typical hysterical characters. During the whole duration, everybody kept telling Otto that he was stupid, which was completely true, but I didn't see what was so funny about a guy who keeps doing and saying some really stupid things all the time. Furthermore, the plot and the characters involved were not bad but I never thought it was really hilarious and, even after re-watching the damned thing, I still ended up with the same feeling. Anyway, even if I’m not a huge fan, it is still a decent comedy though.
