The Handmaiden
Notes: Eventually, I was really impressed by this movie. First of all, it looked really gorgeous and, in this area, it is probably the best movie that Chan-wook Park has delivered so far. On the other hand, I have to admit that I didnā€™t know anything about the plot when I started to watch the damned thing and, to be honest, I did struggle at the beginning to completely follow what the hell was going on and who was who. However, eventually, it turned out to be such a fascinating multi-layered tale. Indeed, for starters, this tale was told from 2 different points of view resulting in a strong thriller with no less than 3 different cons. But they didnā€™t stop here as they managed to mix it with a strong love story. Seriously, it was quite fascinatng to see these 2 women trying to con each other but eventually falling in love. On top of that, there were some really neat erotic scenes. Eventually, I really loved the damned thing and it was easily one of the best movies delivered by Chan-wook Park so far.

Inside Out
Notes: After 5 long years and a couple of disappointing sequel/prequels, Pixar finally came back with an amazing original feature. As soon as I heard about the interesting concept, I was already excited but since they already let me down with 'Brave', I was still a little bit cautious. Eventually, there was really nothing to worry about after all. Indeed, the whole thing was just downright impressive and it worked on every possible level. As expected with Pixar, the animation was quite gorgeous, even though I could have easily done without the 3D. Above all, it is the amount of depth in the story and the characters involved that made the whole thing quite impressive. Indeed, basically, they became incredibly ambitious and decided to show what happens in the human mind, no less than that, and this journey was just fascinating to behold. To be honest, I'm not sure if the young kids will be able to grasp what was exactly going on and even though it was sold as a family feature, I think it is above all really enjoyable for the grown-ups.

When We Were Kings
Notes: To be honest, Iā€™m not a huge fan of boxing as a sport, I always had a hard time enjoying watching two grown men completely beating each other up, but I canā€™t deny the fact that there is still something quite dramatic about this sport which works very well with movies, in contrary to most other sports. Well, this fight must be one of the most famous fights that ever took place and everything about it was larger than life. Indeed, you had the young George Forman who was like this huge monster who seemed unbeatable and, of course, the legendary Muhammad Ali with his huge mouth and his unique charisma who was much older and who seemingly didnā€™t stand a chance. Eventually, the fight didnā€™t disappoint and, against all odds, with all Africa behind him, Ali won back his title which he had lost not because he faced a better opponent but because he didnā€™t want to take part in a war in which he didnā€™t believe in. Eventually, the whole thing was pretty fascinating to behold and you can see that even though ā€˜Aliā€™, starring Will Smith and directed Michael Mann, was a decent attempt, they never really managed to grasp the complexety and magnitude of this huge man.

The Barbarian Invasions (2003)
Notes: Even though I have left France almost 20 years ago, I still try to watch some French (speaking) movies once in a while. I'm particularly interested in the movies which won the CƩsar of the Best French movie (the French equivalent for the Oscars). Actually, this movie is Canadian but, somehow, it was still qualified to win this prize. Anyway, it was a very good drama, dealing with life and death, and the cast, made of actors unknown to me at that time, was really impressive. To be honest, I'm rather oblivious about Denys Arcand's work (so far, it is the only movie he has directed that I have seen) but I will definitely check his other features. As I really liked this sequel, I'm really curious about the original movie 'Le DƩclin de l'empire amƩricain' and I hope I will manage to watch it as some point. Apparently, it involves the same characters played by the same actors but 15 years before. Anyway, this movie can easily be watched as stand alone as it was quite spellbinding and heartbreaking to behold.

Nanook of the North
Notes: Well, I was seriously impressed by this movie, that's for sure. First of all, I have always been interested in documentaries so it was just really neat to see this movie which is usually considered as the very first movie in this genre. Indeed, Robert Flaherty, probably not consciously, set many of the ground rules of the genre and most of the documentaries made nowadays still use these rules. Obviously, many criticised this movie because many (maybe all) of the scenes were actually staged but this criticism is rather ridiculous in my opinion. Indeed, can you imagine shooting with such 100 years old cameras in such terrible conditions without setting up first the scenes? Even nowadays, they still make up some stuff. Anyway, the bottom line is, was it faithful or not? You bet it was. Indeed, with this movie, you get a fascinating look on the life of Eskimos and even though this movie is nowadays almost 100 years old, it never felt condescending. Anyway, this movie was a huge milestone in motion picture history.

The Last Emperor (1987)
Notes: First of all, to be honest, I was actually rather disappointed that they shot this movie in English instead of Mandarin of Manchurian which was probably the language spoken by the Emperor. Then, even though it was almost 3 hours long, it still must be the most accessible movie directed by Bertolucci. Basically, it was pretty much a rather straightforward biopic but it doesn't mean that I didn't seriously enjoy it though. Indeed, even though storywise, it was nothing really groundbreaking, it was visually really impressive and, by far, the most ambitious feature in this area delivered by the Italian master. Concerning the story, not only it was an entertaining tale about the life of the last Emperor of China, it also provided a fascinating view on 60 years of Chinese history. Of course, you might argue that some of the facts had been dramatised to make the whole thing more suitable for the silver screen but you can assume that most of it was actually fairly accurate. Above all, I thought it was quite interesting to learn that the Emperor, right from the beginning of his reign, didn't have any power whatsoever making his life even more peculiar to follow.

Mank
Notes: Well, unfortunately, even though I really admired the work done, to be honest, I canā€™t say I was really blown by the end-result though. I mean, as usual with David Fincher, it was visually really impressive and I loved the way he tried to reproduce the vibe of a movie from the same time period. Furthermore, Herman Mankiewicz was an interesting character and Gary Oldman gave another really strong performance. However, the first issue was already the fact that, beside Mankiewicz, none of the other characters were developed whatsoever. However, the biggest problem was that, even though this movie was obviously a passion project for Fincher (it was even written by his father years ago), it was interesting at best but never really fascinating, Iā€™m afraid. In a sense, you could compare it to ā€˜Once Upon a Time in Hollywoodā€™ which was basically Tarantinoā€™s love songs to the end-60ā€™s Hollywood, in this case, Fincher brought us back to the 1930's Hollywood with his meticulous attention to the details but, just like with Tarantinoā€™s acclaimed opus, I just didnā€™t care much like they both did. Furthermore, concerning the conception of ā€˜Citizen Kaneā€™, it didnā€™t go really deep after all. I mean, basically, Mankiewicz locked himself up in some lodge in the middle of nowhere and delivered one of the best screenplays ever written, thatā€™s it. Anyway, even if I didnā€™t care much the material, it was still another fine directing effort by David Fincher.

Toni Erdmann
Notes: Even though it is a rather tricky movie and even though I took me a while to get into the damned thing, I was eventually really impressed. First of all, even though I did laugh a few times, it was definitely not a comedy but it was neither really a drama. Eventually, it was something really different and quite spellbinding to behold. One thing I was wondering was when did Winfried Conradi started to show this erratic behaviour. Was he always like this or is it something that came later on in his life? Indeed, it was something that was never addressed by this family which might give the feeling that he did this for quite a while but, on the other hand, their bewilderment was an indication they really didnā€™t know what the hell was going on. Anyway, another thing I loved about this movie is that it didnā€™t provide some supposedly profound life lessons which was just so refreshing. Indeed, even if Winfried was obviously trying to get closer to his daughter, his method was actually rather toxic and you might wonder if what he did actually change anything after all. And, yet, I was still admiring this man who was at least trying to do something, even if it was something seriously weird. I have to admit that I also liked how they displayed that someone making a lot of money with a supposedly high-social status might still have a rather lame job after all. Eventually, Winfried probably did his best to raise his daughter, he managed to give her a high education resulting in a successful career and, yet, they have become seriously estranged in this process and it was so recognizable and rather heartbreaking.
