Diego Maradona
chosen by Peter Notes: After watching 'Amy', this was the 2nd documentary we saw directed by Asif Kapadia with our film club. First of all, even though the movie was about 2 hours long, I was surprised that they mostly focused on less than 10 years which shows that there were so many dramatic events in Maradona's life that you could easily release a whole TV-show about him. Anyway, as a kid growing up in the 80's, I was quite fascinated by Diego Maradona, I always believed that he had been one of the greatest footballers ever and, with this movie, you get to see pretty much all the highlights of the most productive part of his career which was pretty neat. However, if the promotional material might have been giving the impression that this movie would provide a complex portrayal of this notorious figure, I'm afraid that it was a slight failure in this area. Basically, the whole thing was just too one-sided as their approach was to constantly show Maradona as a victim. Indeed, if you would believe this movie, even when he was at the top of his game, he was still a victim of his success as the fans were giving him too much attention (massive stalking might be a better word though). But he was also a victim of the mafia, of the defense players, of the media, of the Napoli football club, of a pregnant woman, of a good chunk of the Italian population... Of course, it was one way to see his life but some nuances would have been maybe more interesting. Still, there is no doubt that the guy was an amazing football player. (Aug. 2019)

Notes: I must confess, I'm not a huge fan of his very old British features. I mean, they are old pretty good and entertaining, that's for sure, but except for 'The Lady Vanishes' which really impressed me, none of them actually blew me away and this movie was not an exception. It seems that it is a very popular story since it has been adapted 4 times already and, apparently, this version is the most acclaimed one. Basically, it is one of those many British spy movies Hitchcock made back in those days and even though I enjoyed it, I couldn't shake the thought that he was still rehearsing before creating all his masterpieces he made in the 40's and the 50's. Still, this movie is considered as a major British film of its time so I might re-watch it at some point in the future to make up my mind for good. Anyway, even though it didn't really blow me away, it is still a very entertaining vintage spy feature.

An average movie

“I already saw this movie but since my wife has a weak spot for the genre, I thought I might as well re-watch it with her. Well, I have to admit that I enjoyed it more the 2nd time around but, when I think about it, it was probably because I saw in the meantime ‘Conversations with a Killer: The Ted” read more

An average movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Alicia Vikander, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, to be honest, it wasn’t really good after all and I’m not surprised that they released the damned thing 3 years after the shooting was done (Eventually” read more

A very good movie

“I already saw this movie but, for some reason, I was quite eager to check it out again. The first time around, since I kept hearing some pretty good things about this flick, I was quite eager to see it. Well, it’s a pity it turned out to be a flop at the box-office as it was, in my opinion, much m” read more

First Man
Notes: To be honest, I wonder why they didn’t release this movie a year later as it came out just a year before the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing but, maybe, it would haven’t made a difference at the box-office. Anyway, I thought it was a fascinating look on the race to the moon and I loved the scientific approach they took. It was also really neat to discover that Neil Armstrong was neither some cowboy or even a solider but a very accomplished engineer. In fact, all these astronauts and even pretty much everyone involved in this project turned out to be pretty damned smart. And, yet, as pointed out by Janet Armstrong, fairly often, you wonder if these guys really knew what the hell they were doing. Indeed, at least 3 times during the whole duration, Armstrong came close to loose his life and, yet, each time, he kept on going without much hesitation. To be honest, I had some doubts on how they played out the Apollo 11 mission though. I mean, it was, just as the rest of the movie, very well done but, after all what happened before, it felt actually slightly anti-climactic but I might need to re-watch this movie some point to make up my mind on the final act. Anyway, eventually, it was another fascinating movie from Damien Chazelle.

Murder Mystery
Victim: - Jennifer Anniston Worldwide Gross: none (streaming feature) Note: Even though it didn’t turn out to be one of Sandler’s worst movies, it still turned out to be so lazy and poorly developed. The best example would be how, out of the blue, the main character decided to go on a trip in Europe with his wife. I mean, sure, they didn’t seem to be poor but they definitely didn’t have the financial means to take such a sudden trip. Then, even if Adam Sandler and Jennifer Anniston have been friends apparently for years, they didn’t really have much chemistry as a couple. Furthermore, it didn’t help that if Sandler was rather believable as a loser police officer (not exactly a huge challenge for him though), Anniston was not convincing at all as a blue-collar hairdresser.
