Notes: First of all, is it really a horror feature? Sometimes, I thought it was actually pretty funny above all because of the mannered acting of those silent movies. I mean, with a Charles Chaplin movie, it works like a charm but with a horror flick like this one, it makes you chuckle quite often. Also, even though at first I was quite happy with the awesome classic music, it was actually rather distracting because, since it wasnât especially composed for this movie, it often didnât fit at all the action. Still, the production value was quite impressive, especially for a movie made 90 years ago, and there was definitely something dark and ominous about the whole thing, especially the awesome bal masquĂ© with the Phantom disguised as the Red Death. And, of course, you have Lon Chaney. Man, this guy was impressive, playing one hell of a psycho, and to think he designed himself his own make-up was even more astonishing (apparently, it is something he took care of in all his movies).5 years, 3 months ago

Notes: To be honest, it has been a while since I have this flick and I should probably re-watch it at some point. By now, I have seen more than 6000 movies and, following this mad obsession about movies, I have seen many very old classics and I have noticed that it is very often hit-and-miss with such timeless features. Indeed, with some of them, I could see right away why they have been heralded through all the years but, for some others, it seems more that they were groundbreaking when they were released but they seem to be rather dated nowadays. Well, in this case, with this movie, it thought it was pretty good and, from a technical point of view, Eisenstein was quite a genius who came up with some movie technics that were never used before but, still, was it really such a fascinating story? Iâm not so sure. I mean, it is probably the best propaganda film ever made but, even so, the propaganda genre has its limitations and, as a result, this movie still didnât really blow me away. Anyway, even though it didnât become one of my all time favorite movies, it is still a really interesting watch.5 years, 3 months ago

Notes: What can be said about this movie that hasnât been said so many times before? Basically, it is pure and simply another impressive piece of cinema coming from Charles Chaplin and it is probably even better than 'The Circus' which I also loved. In fact, I have actually a nice story about this flick. At some point, I displayed this movie to my step-children because I thought it was important for their education. Back then, Nick, my step-son, was only 8 years old but, suddenly, out of nowhere, now 15 years old, during one of our endless conversations about movies, Nick started to precisely described in details the famous scene when the Tramp eats his shoe. Seriously, it was quite something and it shows the huge impact of this movie (but it could be said about anything done by this guy). Myself, I started to watch this movie when I was just a kid and, already then, I thought it was just fascinating and completely hilarious. 5 years, 3 months ago

Notes: To be honest, I thought it was rather hard to judge this movie after all. Indeed, on one hand, it was a huge box-office success at the time, it was also the first time that a war epic of this size was made (we shouldnât forget it was made already 100 years ago) and it was really influential for all the war movies that came afterwards. However, on the other hand, I have to admit that I actually struggled to really care about this movie though. Indeed, first of all, there was the fact that, with a running time of 150 mins, it was pretty damned long. Then, another thing that bothered me even more was the fact that it took them forever to finally get involved in this worldwide conflict. Eventually, Iâm not sure if I really cared about these 3 soldiers bonding about the most random things that you could imagine. The war scenes came therefore fairly late but these were the reason why this movie became pretty famous. However, to be honest, even these scenes left me rather unfazed. Thatâs the tricky thing when you watch a movie so old, itâs sometimes difficult to forget all the movies you have seen in the same genre that came afterwards which were technically obviously superior to this one. However, none of these other war movies would have been possible if this movie wasnât made in the first place.5 years, 3 months ago

Notes: For Jordan Peele, this movie turned out to be another home-run as it was another box-office and critical success and, personally, I think I enjoyed it even more than âGet Outâ. Indeed, the damned thing was just so spooky and quite scarier than Peeleâs previous directing effort and, on top of that, Lupita Nyong'o gave not one but two very strong performances. Still, unfortunately, pretty much like with âGet Outâ, once again, I thought that the concept was rather far-fetched after all. Seriously, ever since I saw this movie, I kept thinking about it and, to be honest, none of it made much sense. Furthermore, I figured out the twist fairly early on and, while Adelaideâs behaviour could be explained, Redâs behaviour, considering this twist, didnât really work though. Anyway, even if it wasnât flawless, it was still pretty damned entertaining and it was another really strong horror flick from Peele.5 years, 3 months ago
