Getting In

5 years, 4 months ago
Things to Come (1936)
Notes: It turned out to be a really neat vintage UK science-fiction flick. Seriously, it was really impressive how much they did cover with a movie almost 100 years old and lasting only 90 mins. Indeed, I didn’t see it mentioned by other viewers or critics but, with this ‘wandering sickness’, they were pretty much the predecessor for all these zombie flicks that came afterwards (I mean, ‘The Walking Dead’ does sound extremely similar, doesn’t it?). Then, it was probably the oldest post-apocalyptic movie I have seen and it didn’t stop here. In this movie, you get to see some flat-screens and, even if it might not seem weird to us to see those, in fact, they would be invented only 70 years later. As far as I was concerned, the most hairy thing was how this movie was dealing with a large scale all-destructing war only 3 years before WWII actually started. So, it was definitely a prescient movie and you might wonder why it didn’t have more an impact back then and even nowadays. Eventually, I think it was because the whole thing was rather clunky which partially had to with the fact that they covered all of this (eventually, they covered a whopping 100 years) in only 90 minutes when, in fact, with so much material, they could have easily delivered a movie lasting 3 hours.

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, even though the damned thing really had some potential, to be honest, it didn’t really work though. It’s too bad because, once again after ‘Office Space’” read more

Notes: At least, this movie had a rather decent concept, which is more than what you usual get with such dreadful direct-to-DVD features starring Bruce Willis. Still, it doesn't mean that it was actually good though. Indeed, beside a concept which was pretty much a mix of 'Blade Runner' with 'The Purge', this movie had really nothing else to offer, at least, nothing good. First of all, the tech looked cheap and unconvincing but that was hardly the biggest issue with this flick. Indeed, there wasn't really a main character but about 3 or 4 really half-baked characters and, to make things worse, all the actors involved gave some rather weak performances. Finally, even though the concept did have some potential, it wasn't properly developed at all. Indeed, as displayed most brilliantly in 'Blade Runner', the most interesting thing about such a movie dealing with such advanced AI is the reflection on what makes us human and the mental struggle going through such a conscious artificial being. Well, obviously, this movie didn't care about this at all and, instead, they gave us some really generic and boring action scenes.

A very good movie

“Since I kept hearing some really good things about this flick (it even won the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival), I was really eager to check it out. Shoplifters
Notes: Apparently, Hirokazu Koreeda has the reputation of being the greatest humanist director at work nowadays and, after watching this movie, it is pretty easy to understand why. Basically, this time around, Koreeda focused on a group of people who has all been rejected and pretty much forgotten by the common society and who are now living in a marginal lifestyle with its own rules and moral code. Koreeda’s masterstroke was that he never judges or praises the characters and, for the first 90 minutes, you see how they cope living completely in the margin of our society. So, it was already quite interesting with some complex 3 dimensional character but, during the last act, they managed to push the whole concept even further. Basically, after a tragic even which was doomed to happen at some point, they completely get sucked back into our world and it all became seriously heart-breaking and even more powerful than it already was. Eventually, following ‘Like Father, Like Son’, this movie was even stronger argument from Koreeda that the strongest bond between the members in a family is not blood but love.
