Notes: I know, sometimes, my ratings are rather harsh but after watching so many movies, it is not very often that I’m truly amazed by something new. And, yet, sometimes, it does happen and, as a result, I keep watching movies after movies hoping to get again this great feelings I got when I was a teenager discovering the classics. Well, this movie was basically one of those extroardinary gems and I would go as far as saying that it is one of the very best movies I have seen during the last decade. To be honest, I'm usually not so found of those ‘true story’ movies but this one was just simply amazing. The best thing, in my opinion, was the directing. I mean, Julian Schnabel’s previous movies (‘Basquiat’ and ‘Before Night Falls’ also some real life tales about some famous figures) were decent but, here, he seriously reached another lever and he really succeeded in giving an idea of what it could be like to be in such predicament. Of course, Mathieu Amalric gave a powerhouse perfomance and the story was just fascinating to behold. 5 years, 4 months ago

Notes: In my opinion, it is probably the last great movie directed by Tim Burton, even maybe his best one ever. I mean, he has made some good flicks afterwards but never as inspired and inspiring as this one. The first time I saw it, I thought it was pretty good but I don't know why, the second time around, I thought it was just amazing and I was just blown away by the whole thing. The visuals, the directing, the performances,... Everything was pretty impressive. For once, the main character was not portrayed by Johnny Depp but by Ewan McGregor and I thought it was really refreshing (Especially when you see what Burton and Depp has done together between 2005 and 2012...). Furthermore, they had a really top cast and they all gave some solid performances. Above all, I thought it was such a deep, thougthful and inspiring tale which managed to intermingle life, death, love, truth, lie, and many other things. Since then, Tim Burton has spent his time adapting 2 famous books, a broadway show, a TV show and playing around with some puppets but I would be nice if he went looking again for some really original material. 5 years, 4 months ago

Notes: I know, sometimes, my ratings are rather harsh but after watching so many movies, it is not very often that I’m truly amazed by something new. Notes: I heard the critics were good but I didn't expect to be blown away like this. Until now, I thought Sean Penn was a pretty good director but this one is his best by far. Indeed, I thought it was a really fascinating and thoughtfull story with some great directing and acting. Emile Hirsch shows here he is a very talented actor and I am really curious to see what he will do in the future (Eventually, his career went nowhere after all). The thing I most enjoyed was that the main character was, at the same time, inspiring and rather fascinating, but through his choices, he was also displayed as a rather selfish and arrogant young fellow and the duplicity of this character made him even more human and even more interesting to watch. I don't know, I guess, to enjoy this movie, you still have to relate with the main character's state of mind, otherwise the whole thing might seem pretentious, juvenile or even stupid to you. I mean, I would have never dare leave home like this (I did immigrate to the Netherlands when I was 22 years so I still get some extra points, I guess) but I sure can understand that someone would get fed up with our society, drop the whole thing and just get on the road.5 years, 4 months ago

Note: At least, this time, his character was married with Kathryn Hahn which marked the very first time that Adam Sandler was playing someone with a believable love interest. And, I have to admit that I actually did like the intro with these two old friends getting back together after all these years. Unfortunately, pretty much everything else happening afterwards was just some total garbage. Above all, I was just amazed by how completely random the story was. Seriously, it seems that Sandler is becoming lazier with each movie.5 years, 4 months ago

Notes: Well, eventually, it turned to be even weaker than I expected, I'm afraid. To be honest, I have to admit that I actually did like the intro with these two old friends getting back together after all these years. Unfortunately, pretty much everything else happening afterwards was just some total garbage. Above all, I was just amazed by how completely random the story was. Seriously, it seems that Sandler is becoming lazier with each movie. I mean, here, his character was switching agenda every 5 minutes, being a FBI agent, then a coroner, then a school counselor and finally a victim of cancer. Seriously, by the end, I still didn't who the hell this guy was supposed to be. And to throw the ultimate cure for cancer in the mix was just borderline offensive. 5 years, 4 months ago

Notes: I remember it, many years before this movie was even released , there was a huge hype surrounding it. Eventually, it became the biggest box-office success ever. Nowadays, pretty much like ‘Titanic’ , the views concerning this flick are pretty extreme and basically, many love it but also many people really hate it with a vengeance. So, according to many viewers, it is really overrated but, personally, after seeing Avatar, I realized that 3D movies could be great and not a complete swindle. The story was maybe not original but was still pretty entertaining and the visuals were just mind-blowing. Coming out of the movie theater, I had probably the same feeling when people just saw Star Wars back in 1977. By now, I have seen it a couple of times on Blu-Ray, I still think it is really good. Ok, it may not be as mind-blowing as the first time, in theater, with the 3D and all, but it remains a gorgeous flick and a milestone in motion picture history. Coming back on the story, many believe it is just a rehash of ‘Pocahontas’ and even though it is partly true, I still think there is an extra dimension to it. Indeed, the main character finally walks again and suddenly becomes another being and on a psychological and a metaphysical level, it was quite intriguing.5 years, 4 months ago
