Notes: Basically, this movie is quite unique. It is more than 80 years old, and it is not some fiction but not a documentary either. Basically, it is something quite different. It seemed to be some kind of experiment to see how far you could go with a camera and those guys invented or developed many movie techniques in the process such as double exposure, fast motion, slow motion, freeze frames, jump cuts, split screens, extreme close-ups, tracking shots, footage played backwards, stop motion animation,… From an historical point of view, this movie is therefore an amazing treasure. I mean, if you have any interest in movie as an Art form, it is pretty much a must-see. However, I must confess, the whole thing was not really entertaining to watch though. Indeed, it is basically a collection of random footage and the one scene has barely anything to do with another and even though there were some awesome shots, it was sometimes pretty tedious to watch. Still, it is a classic, a very interesting watch, and it is definitely worth a look.5 years, 4 months ago

Notes: Even though I did like the damned thing, to be honest, it didn’t completely win me over though. Above all, in my opinion, the whole thing was rather messy. The best example would be the very first scene. Indeed, it felt as if they skipped something as none of the characters were properly introduced. I mean, who was Lulu? Where did she come from? How did she end up in this apartment? Who were all these guys trying to get her attention? After that, a lot of things did happen to her (she even ended up in the arms of Jack the Ripper) but, at the same time, you learn so very little about Lulu after all. Indeed, what was she thinking or feeling during all this? And, yet, the damned thing was still quite spellbinding to behold, above all, because Louise Brooks had such a magnetic screen presence. After watching this movie, it is rather surprising that she didn’t have a great career afterwards (she did become super famous after this movie was released but it didn’t last). Anyway, from the first moment she showed up on the screen, I was just hooked and she was definitely one of the most mesmerizing women I ever saw. There was also something about her acting. At the time, it was apparently misunderstood because she was going for such a naturalistic acting, she was basically ahead of the game for several decades and the audience back then had no idea how to deal with it. 5 years, 4 months ago

What was it about?
With a sale tag hanging from his seat, propped up in the corner of a bicycle store on a rainy night, Red the unicycle dreams about a better place.
My two cents:
Well, to be honest, I didn't care much for this short. I mean, the concept was not bad but, in my opinion, it was too similar to what they did in 'Luxor Jr.'. However, the biggest issue was with the clown though. Of course, I understand that they were just starting at the time to make such CGI animated features and this guy was actually their first organic character. So, it was quite a milestone but, I'm sorry, this clown was just ugly and he made the whole thing quite cringe-inducing to behold. It is still worth a look though but, in my opinion, it is definitely a minor effort coming from Pixar.

Notes: To be honest, I don’t think this movie grew old very well. I mean, 90 years after it was released, so many vastly superior gangster flicks have been released such as ‘The Godfather’ 1 and 2, ‘Goodfellas’, ‘Scarface’ and many others. And yet, even if this movie was maybe not the first in this genre, it was certainly a major trendsetter, the precursor of all the gritty gangster movies that came in the 30’s but also afterwards up until nowadays. On top of that, even if the movie itself didn’t really impress me, I have to admit that Edward G. Robinson was pure gold though. Indeed, the guy was just so convincing and even if you maybe didn’t like his character, he was still seriously charismatic. Sure, he was definitely not a nice guy but he was tough and rather smart and, eventually, it all made sense how Little Caesar managed to climb up the ladder in the mob world. As a result, this realistic approach made the whole thing quite compelling to behold. However, the rest of the movie didn’t have much to offer, I’m afraid. Indeed, none of the other characters was remarkable whatsoever. It’s also interesting that there was only one female character involved, a character barely developed, and you might wonder why the main character didn’t have a girlfriend or a lover which is usually a main attribute for any average gangster. Even if it didn’t complete blow me away, it was still a really solid vintage gangster flick though.5 years, 4 months ago
