Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Notes: This movie turned out to be such a nice surprise and the proof that even though we are close to get a super-hero overdose, there is actually still apparently quite some creativity in this genre. Indeed, even if it might not be the best super-hero flick ever made (it wasn’t far from it though), it still managed to become the best Spider-Man flick so far. I’m not surprised that Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were involved as the whole thing turned out to be such a fun wild entertaining ride. On top of that, the animation was just really neat and I wish I had seen it in the movie theatre when it was released because it was visually quite spectacular. Furthermore, this movie displayed that, to move forward with Spider-Man, they shouldn’t keep focusing on only Peter Parker because, after getting 3 young white boys playing pretty much playing exactly the same character, it is getting seriously repetitive and rather boring. With finally giving the lead to Miles Morales, they opened so many doors and, hopefully, the mighty Marvel will notice it and try to tackle some even more original concepts in the future. Finally, it was such a breath of fresh air to see a super-hero flick which wasn’t linked to an intricate cinematic universe.

A very good movie

“To be honest, when I first heard about this flick, I wasn’t really interested. Indeed, it felt like Sony was really trying to milk the famous character. Seriously, after giving us already 3 different iterations in just a decade, to go also for an animated version on top of it felt like some seriou” read more

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)
Notes: Even though it is almost 80 years old, it is still an impressive piece of work. Indeed, at the time, it was the very first full length animated feature, a huge gamble for Walt Disney, but this gamble paid off as it was a big box-office hit and it started the massive empire of Disney in the film business. Eventually, this movie would become the blueprint for their future work and, after all these years, the timeless fairy tales are still their most enduring trademark. Fortunately, they have the financial means to maintain their work and this movie has been restored already a couple of times and it still look quite amazing. Of course, they would improve and/or diversify their technic through the years but this one was already quite gorgeous to look at. To be honest, even though the story was charming and the dwarves pretty hilarious, the plot was decent but not really strong, in my opinion. For example, they spent half of the running time with Snow White getting to their home and getting acquainted with those fellows while everything involving the prince was seriously underwritten. Indeed, nowadays, this whole concept of this prince coming up from nowhere and basically saving the day seems rather hard to swallow for the modern audience. Anyway, even though it might seem outdated, it remains a timeless classic nonetheless.

Taboo
What is it about? Adventurer James Keziah Delaney returns to London during the War of 1812 to rebuild his late father's shipping empire. However, both the government and his biggest competitor want his inheritance at any cost - even murder. My verdict: To be honest, pretty much like 'Godless', even though I really enjoyed the damned thing, I still have to admit that it still slightly disappointed me though. Basically, I'm not surprised it was written by the same guy who wrote 'Peaky Blinders' since this TV-show had pretty much the same qualities and shortcomings. Indeed, the whole thing looked amazing and there was a strong cast involved. However, just like in 'Peaky Blinders', even though the main character was really charismatic and very well played by Tom Hardy, the guy was just too omnipotent for my taste. As a result, the narrative structure was just really predictable. Basically, each time his enemies would come up with something seemingly insurmountable, he would outsmart them no matter what. Still, the damned thing was quite mesmerizing though. Will I watch the following seasons? Apparently, a 2nd season has been planned but, 4 years later, we don't hear much about it so I'm not sure if it will really happen.

An average movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a nice cast involved, I was quite eager to check it out. Unfortunately, I was surprised by how half-baked the damned thing actually turned out to be. I mean, it did have some potential but there was something slightly misguide” read more

The Awful Truth (1937)
Notes: To be honest, even though this movie is considered as one of the best screwball comedies ever made, I have to admit that I had a really hard time to care about the damned thing after all. In fact, I think it probably have to do with some technical issues I had with the video I saw on YouTube. Indeed, visually, the quality was fine but, unfortunately, the sound was out of synch. Indeed, this movie became famous because it was mostly improvised and timing is crucial in comedy. In this case, since all the sound was out of synch, the timing was basically ruined and, as a result, it had a huge impact on my appreciation of the whole movie. It’s too bad because I always had a weak spot for Cary Grant and this was some perfect material for him. I have to admit that I wasn’t really familiar with Irene Dunne before watching this movie (she reminded me of some of kind of vintage version of Greta Gerwig) but she was pretty good here and she definitely had some decent chemistry with Cary Grant (they would eventually make 2 more movies together). Eventually, I should re-watch this movie under better conditions but, to be honest, I have some doubts that it will really dazzle me though. Indeed, I have been focusing lately on such vintage screwball comedies and I’m just not a huge fan of the genre. As usual, the plot was just so paper-thin here and, even though Grant and Dunne were both pretty good, their respective characters were hardly interesting after all. Still, it is a classic though.

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this movie since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, I really struggled to get into this flick.
