An average movie

“I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Alicia Vikander, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, to be honest, it wasnā€™t really good after all and Iā€™m not surprised that they released the damned thing 3 years after the shooting was done (Eventually” read more

A very good movie

“I already saw this movie but, for some reason, I was quite eager to check it out again. The first time around, since I kept hearing some pretty good things about this flick, I was quite eager to see it. Well, itā€™s a pity it turned out to be a flop at the box-office as it was, in my opinion, much m” read more

First Man
Notes: To be honest, I wonder why they didnā€™t release this movie a year later as it came out just a year before the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing but, maybe, it would havenā€™t made a difference at the box-office. Anyway, I thought it was a fascinating look on the race to the moon and I loved the scientific approach they took. It was also really neat to discover that Neil Armstrong was neither some cowboy or even a solider but a very accomplished engineer. In fact, all these astronauts and even pretty much everyone involved in this project turned out to be pretty damned smart. And, yet, as pointed out by Janet Armstrong, fairly often, you wonder if these guys really knew what the hell they were doing. Indeed, at least 3 times during the whole duration, Armstrong came close to loose his life and, yet, each time, he kept on going without much hesitation. To be honest, I had some doubts on how they played out the Apollo 11 mission though. I mean, it was, just as the rest of the movie, very well done but, after all what happened before, it felt actually slightly anti-climactic but I might need to re-watch this movie some point to make up my mind on the final act. Anyway, eventually, it was another fascinating movie from Damien Chazelle.

Murder Mystery
Victim: - Jennifer Anniston Worldwide Gross: none (streaming feature) Note: Even though it didnā€™t turn out to be one of Sandlerā€™s worst movies, it still turned out to be so lazy and poorly developed. The best example would be how, out of the blue, the main character decided to go on a trip in Europe with his wife. I mean, sure, they didnā€™t seem to be poor but they definitely didnā€™t have the financial means to take such a sudden trip. Then, even if Adam Sandler and Jennifer Anniston have been friends apparently for years, they didnā€™t really have much chemistry as a couple. Furthermore, it didnā€™t help that if Sandler was rather believable as a loser police officer (not exactly a huge challenge for him though), Anniston was not convincing at all as a blue-collar hairdresser.

Concerning the plot itself, well, like most movies involving Sandler, I donā€™t think it was such a bad concept but, unfortunately, it was again so poorly developed. Basically, it felt like some kind of weak mix of a Cluedo game and an Agatha Christie mystery novel. Indeed, to parody a genre which is already rather silly to start with like the mystery novel is rather tricky and the makers here just failed miserably. Seriously, all the characters were just rather tedious and most of the jokes were lame.

“Of course, since this movie was poorly received like most Adam Sandlerā€™s features, it didnā€™t expect much from it but since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. A good movie

“To be honest, it seemed to be a rather obscure movie but since my film-club saw it before I joined in, I was really eager to check it out. Top Hat (1935)
Notes: Even if it turned out to be a decent watch, I have to admit that I had a rather hard time to really care about the damned thing. I mean, sure, with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers involved, there were obviously some very good dancing scenes, the songs were not bad and there were even some funny dialogues here and there. Unfortunately, even though I am well aware that it is inherent to the genre, I thought that the story was really fluffy. On top of that, I always get rather bored when a romantic comedy is solely based on a misunderstanding as it is must be one of the most tedious and overused gimmicks in this genre. Anyway, it is pretty obvious that this movie didnā€™t really work for me but I have to admit that it was actually a very well made feature and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

Peter Ibbetson (1935)
Notes: Unfortunately, after watching a pristine restored version of ā€˜The Kid Brotherā€™ on YouTube, for this movie, the version I saw on YouTube as well was seriously bad. In fact, the beginning was pretty much unwatchable and I almost quit at some point. Concerning the movie itself, it turned out to be a strange and super romantic tale. For some reason, it did remind me of ā€˜When Harry met Sallyā€¦ā€™ and how this movie could have turned out to be if the main characters were not so cynical. And, yet, with all its old-fashioned approach, I thought it actually did work which might be surprising since Iā€™m also quite cynical like Harry Burns and Sally Albright. I guess there was something pure and unambiguous on how they approached a romantic relationship. To be honest, the movie didnā€™t have much else to offer though (with a running time of barely 85 mins, there was basically no time for it). There was also the fact that the story didnā€™t make much sense. Wouldnā€™t it have been more logical that Peter meet again Mary in Paris instead of during some completely random work assignment? In fact, even the the two main characters were barely developed at all. Still, there is no denying that Gary Cooper (who, for some reason, thought he was miscast for this part) really made the most of this material and the guy was just super charismatic.
