A very good movie

“Since I kept hearing some really good things about this flick (it even won the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival), I was really eager to check it out. Well, I wasn’t disappointed and the damned thing really deserves its stellar reputation. Apparently, Hirokazu Koreeda has the reputation of b” read more

Shoplifters
Notes: Apparently, Hirokazu Koreeda has the reputation of being the greatest humanist director at work nowadays and, after watching this movie, it is pretty easy to understand why. Basically, this time around, Koreeda focused on a group of people who has all been rejected and pretty much forgotten by the common society and who are now living in a marginal lifestyle with its own rules and moral code. Koreeda’s masterstroke was that he never judges or praises the characters and, for the first 90 minutes, you see how they cope living completely in the margin of our society. So, it was already quite interesting with some complex 3 dimensional character but, during the last act, they managed to push the whole concept even further. Basically, after a tragic even which was doomed to happen at some point, they completely get sucked back into our world and it all became seriously heart-breaking and even more powerful than it already was. Eventually, following ‘Like Father, Like Son’, this movie was even stronger argument from Koreeda that the strongest bond between the members in a family is not blood but love.

The Grand Illusion
Notes: This is indeed a true masterpiece directed by Jean Renoir and I thought it was just brilliant and worked on so many levels. Indeed, not only it is a great war drama, one of the best ever made, but there are also some thrilling escaping schemes and even some hilarious bits here and there. One of the thing I appreciated the most is that there was no bad guy, on either side, which is something actually quite unique. Basically, they had to kill each other because it was their duty but without the war, they could have been friends. All those characters might seem rather stereotypical but they were all actually really 3 dimensional individuals and quite spellbinding to watch, especially von Rauffenstein portrayed by the great Erich von Stroheim. And, obviously, it is a movie which deals with illusions, that this war would be the last one, that all those people from different social backgrounds (working class, wealthy ( Jewish or not), aristocrats) would get along after the war as well as they did while they were fighting together and that the Aristocrats were not actually a dying specie. Basically, it is one of the best movies about the 1rst World War and simply one of the best movies produced back then.

An average movie

“To be honest, I really had no idea what to expect from this flick but since it was directed by David Cronenberg, I still wanted to check it out. Well, at first, it seemed to be a rather odd project for Cronenberg, especially at this point of his career, but, apparently, he was a huge fan of the play” read more

M. Butterfly
Note: Serirously, the whole thing is a mess. I mean, was the main character a complete idiot? Or was he actually aware of Song Liling's true nature and was he wrapped up into some kind of really weird sexual fantasy? Unfortunately, the makers never did confront this issue at any moment through the whole duration, even towards the end, when René Gallimard was asked point-blank what was going on during a trial. Why should you watch it anyway? Even though the whole thing was seriously half-baked, there was still something quite fascinating about this weird romance.

“Since I always had a weak spot for Danny De Vito, I was quite eager to check this flick. Well, even thought the damned thing was definitely fun, to be honest, it didn’t completely worked and I think it was mostly due to the fact that it was De Vito’s directing debut. Indeed, the whole thing felt” read more

“Since I'm a big fan of Thomas Vinterberg's work, of course, I was quite eager to check this movie. Well, even though the damned thing really had some potential, especially since Vinterberg himself grew up in such a commune in Denmark, it still didn't really work, I'm afraid.
