An average movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this movie but, somehow, I still ended up watching this flick. Well, I have to admit that I have never been a huge fan of Stephen King but it has been a while since I have seen such a pathetic adaptation of one of his books.  First of all, I thought it was” read more

Notes: Well, sometimes, I have some huge expectations before watching an old classic and some of them turn out to be slightly disappointing but that was definitely not the case here. Indeed, what a great picture! Even though it is rather old, it has not lost any of its strenghts. I think it took me maybe 5 minutes to get into this story and, as a result, I thought it was just spellbinding from the very start until the very end. Nowadays, in a thriller, you have chases, shootings, improbable twists,... Fortunately, not in this movie. In my opinion, it must be one of the purest movies I have ever seen, you just have 12 guys stuck into a room, that's all what you will get but in spite of these limitations, it was just completely entertaining. Basically, it is just about the power of words and acting. No effects, no tricks, just an incredibly thoughtfull and smart picture and it is definitely one of my all-time favorites.

An average movie

“I already saw this movie but since it was ages ago, I thought I should check it out again. Well, to be honest, I didn’t remember much and I have to admit that it was actually not so bad after all. I mean, I still think that most of the plot was rather idiotic. Indeed, basically, it was some kind o” read more

Wild Strawberries
Notes: Well, to be honest, as usual with Bergman, I had a rather hard time to connect with the damned thing. Still, the fact that I didn't connect with this movie was probably because I'm not smart enough and not because it wasn't a good movie, that's for sure. Eventually, as usual with Bergman's work, I enjoyed more thinking afterwards about his movies than actually watching them and this one was a perfect example. First of all, even though our Western world is getting older and older, we still get very few movies dealing with old age and this movie is easily one of the best about this subject. Indeed, through his whole life, the main character was really successful professionally but he didn't care at all about his relationship with the people around him but, in his twilight years, he is looking back to his past, which is rather usual, and starts to show more compassion towards the few people still around him. However, if this change of attitude and way of thinking made complete sense with the main character, I think it was rather unbelievable that Marianne would suddenly change her mind about him and think that he was a great guy just after spending one road trip with him. Anyway, even if it didn't completely blow me away, it is still a major classic.

Maniac
What is it about? Two strangers are drawn to a mysterious pharmaceutical trial that will, they're assured, with no complications or side-effects whatsoever, solve all of their problems, permanently. Things do not go as planned. My verdict: First of all, the whole thing earned a few extra points for being a mini-serie. Then, it was also so creative, original, just plain weird and, sometimes, quite fascinating to behold. And, yet, something was missing though. I guess they might have spent too much running time on these 'trips' when they could have developed more the characters or the world they were living in instead. Still, only for its sheer originality, it is highly recommended.

A good movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was Adrian Lyne’s directing debut and since I was always had a weak spot for Jodie Foster so, I was quite eager to check it out. To be honest, I was slightly worried with the opening scene which was rather sleazy and misguided. For” read more

A milestone

“Since I saw again ‘How to Get the Man's Foot Outta Your Ass’ recently, I thought it was really time to see this notorious movie directed by Melvin Van Peebles. Well, basically, it was a similar situation that we had with ‘Ed Wood’ which was a great movie about the making-off of ‘Plan 9 fro” read more

A bad movie

“Obviously, I wasn’t expecting much from the damned thing but since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Left Behind
Notes: I had heard of these hardcore Christian movies but it was the first one I saw but I was rather amazed and even appalled by the end-result. Indeed, the whole thing was basically some massive propaganda garbage based on the Rapture and it is rather scary and depressing that some people would actually believe that something like this will happen in the future. I mean, if I did understand correctly, it doesn’t really matter if you are a good or a bad person, it only matters if you put your faith in God and then, and only then, you will be saved and sent to Heaven. But it went further than that, apparently, you have to believe in the ‘right’ God since a Muslim who seemed to be a rather decent man wasn’t spared because of his faith. At least, they had the decency to save all the children regardless of their beliefs. Otherwise, everyone else, the drug addict, the gambler, the capitalist, the adulterer, the investigative journalist, the cute-opinionated-student-with-a-big-mouth, they were all pretty much doomed but, on the other hand, what really happened? Allright, millions of people just disappeared suddenly but would such an event suddenly bring the collapse of the World? I doubt that. I mean, with a massive natural disaster, a nuclear world war, an alien invasion or a zombie outbreak, I could understand why but I thought it was rather far-fetched that it would happen so fast in such circumstances. And, of course, the whole thing looked terrible, especially the cheap CGI, the performances were so weak and the dialogues were borderline laughable.
