An average movie

“I wasn't expecting much from this flick but since I have always been a fan of Sean Penn, I still wanted to check it out. Unfortunately, it turned out to be some really weak mix of the 'Bourne' and 'Taken' franchises. Indeed, except for the fact that Sean Penn did look physically really convincing to” read more

Notes: Since I really loved 'Fantastic Mr. Fox', of course, I was really eager to watch this new stop-motion animated feature from Wes Anderson. And, indeed, I wasn't disappointed and I just really loved the damned thing. First of all, it was such a well made animated feature and the amount of neat details displayed on each screen was just impressive. Furthermore, it was just a really fun adventure with some hilarious dialogue with the typical dry humor we are used to get with West Anderson. On top of that, there was also some room for some more sensitive moments but these scenes never clashed with the rest of the movie. The only critic I could find was that the 'human' characters could have been more developed and the dogs, who were all pretty awesome, were not much developed either because there were so many of them but it wasn't a big deal. Eventually, Wes Anderson displayed once again that he is easily one of the most interesting American directors at work nowadays and I will definitely watch his next director effort. My two cents: Since I really loved 'Fantastic Mr. Fox', of course, I was really eager to watch this new stop-motion animated feature from Wes Anderson. A good movie

“Back in 2017, Ridley Scott pulled off the marketing stunt of the year. Indeed, just about a month before this movie was released, he decided to reshoot all the scenes involving Kevin Spacey, who had just been hit by a massive sex scandal, and replace him with Christopher Plummer. Even though Scott h” read more

A good movie

“In spite of or because of its controversial reputation, I was quite eager to check this movie. On top of that, it had been years since I saw a movie directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini. Well, eventually, it definitely deserves its reputation as it was easily one of the most f*cked-up movies I have ever ” read more

A classic

“I wasn't really sure what to expect from this movie but since this one was included in the '1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die' list, I was quite eager to check it out. First of all, it is obvious that you can't really analyse this movie as a straightforward story as the concept was rather prep” read more

Notes: From all the massive classics directed by David Lean, it is easily and by far my favorite one. Of course, I enjoyed ‘The Bridge on the River Kwai’, ‘Great Expectations’, ‘Brief Encounter’ and even ‘Doctor Zhivago’ but this movie is definitely from a different level. First of all, visually speaking, it is Lean’s most thrilling epic. For example, at the beginning of the movie, you have this amazing paranomic shot of the desert and it was just mesmerizing. It is a very long static shot of the desert and, at some point, you finally see a camel rider coming from afar and coming slowly towards you. In this very shot, you have the real essence of this movie. Indeed, it is slow but also very meditative and so beautiful to look at. Of course, Peter O’Toole was just brilliant in this star-making performance and ever since I saw him in this movie, I became fascinated by this actor and I try to check his other movies whenever I get the opportunity. Somehow, I also connected with this character torn apart between two cultures which maybe has to with the fact that I’m half-French and half-Dutch.

A good movie

“Since I kept hearing some pretty good things about this movie, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, I have to admit that I was rather floored  by the damned thing and it had been a while since I saw such a massive mind-f*ck. To be honest, I don't think it is possible to write a review for this ” read more

chosen by Johan Notes: For once, I was really relaxed before watching this movie because I was pretty sure it would be a great success with the film club. And, indeed, I wasn't disappointed and everybody loved it. First of all, it was such a well made animated feature and the amount of neat details displayed on each screen was just impressive. Furthermore, it was just a really fun adventure with some hilarious dialogue with the typical dry humor we are used to get with West Anderson. But there was also some room for some more sensitive moments and these scenes never clashed with the rest of the movie. The only critic I could find was that the 'human' characters could have been more developed and the dogs, who were all pretty awesome, were not much developed either because there were so many of them but it wasn't a big deal. Eventually, Wes Anderson displayed once again that he is easily one of the most interesting American directors at work nowadays and I will definitely watch his next director effort, hopefully again with my dear film club. Notes: Eventually, the more I think about it, the more I come to believe that this movie might be actually rather overrated, even by myself. I mean, it is indeed a huge classic and I really liked it but there were definitely some elements that did bother me. The first thing was probably the fact that Roger Ebert surprisingly didn't like it and, in his review, he developed some really solid arguments about what went wrong with this movie. Furthermore, I thought it did take a very long time to take off. Also, you always hear that Atticus Finch is a great character, brilliantly played by Gregory Peck. It is true but actually the movie didn't focus on him but on his children and I wasn't thrilled by this choice. Eventually, I should definitely rewatch it at some point to make up my mind about the damned thing but, for the time being, it remains a very good movie and a great classic.
