Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
Notes: I had the opportunity to watch it again recently and, this time, I understood why it was regarded as one of his best movies. It was the only comedy made by Stanley Kubrick and, as expected from the best director ever, it ended up being one of the best comedies ever made. Indeed, there were so many hysterical and hilarious scenes, I couldn't pick just one. Furthermore, everybody remembers Peter Sellers who was indeed excellent but the rest of the cast was also pretty awesome (George C. Scott, Sterling Hayden, Slim Pickens). Above all, I enjoyed the fact that it was very timely, especially when it was made and it was also very smart compared to all the stupid comedies they make nowadays. For example, everything happening in the plane was really accurate and made the whole thing even more surreal. I'm pretty sure that if I will watch it again it the future, I will love it even more.

A good movie

“Since I kept hearing some pretty good things about this movie, I was really eager to check it out. On top of that, since it was Alexandre Aja's breakthrough directing effort, it was definitely interesting. Well, eventually, I wasn't disappointed and this movie was easily Aja's best movie so far. An average movie

“I already saw this movie but since it was a while back, I thought I might as well check it out again. Well, the damned thing definitely had some potential. Indeed, I really liked the concept of mixing a neo-noir detective tale with a culture clash between Japan and the USA and the addition of a corp” read more

A Hard Day
Notes: First of all, I have to admit it, I even though I have some huge respect for their legacy, I have actually never been a big fan of the Beattles and I never really cared for their music. Still, even so , I thought it was actually a rather enjoyable feature. To be honest, I wasn't really able to follow the whole thing as it was in English without subtitles and the accents were sometimes rather thick but, obviously, this movie was not really about the plot or the dialogues either. At the time, it was a surprising box-office hit and many bands tried later on to release some similar movies like this one but most of them were some massive flops (the worse one being probably โ€˜Spice Worldโ€™). Anyway, to conclude, even though this movie didnโ€™t seem to be something for me, I thought it was actually pretty cool.

An average movie

“To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. First of all, it is not very often that you get to see Vin Diesel in something really new since he nowadays he only shows up in some sequels. Anyway, even though ” read more

Notes: First of all, I thought it was pretty awesome to see Catherine Deneuve at such a young age. Indeed, she is such a terrific actress, she was already awesome back then and the more movies I watch starring this actress, the more she fascinates me. What about the movie itself ? To be honest, even though I thought it was indeed pretty good with some nice songs, at the end of the day, it was obvious that it was not my thing. For example, all the dialogue in the film is sung and while the fan of the genre praised this choice, I always thought it was a rather tedious gimmick. Still even though I have never been a big fan of musicals, I liked this one. Indeed, I can't deny the fact that it was very well made and it definitely had some quirky qualities.

Notes: Unfortunately, this movie was pretty much destroyed by the critics when it was released so I lowered down my expectations but I was still eager to check it out. Well, even though it wasn't a complete disaster, it was still seriously weak though. Indeed, the whole thing was just really poorly put together and I'm actually lucky that I read the book a couple of years ago because, otherwise, I'm not sure if I would have been able to follow the damned thing. What I missed the most is that while the story was not necessarily amazing (I actually preferred 'Phantom' from the same author and also involving Harry Hole), at least, in the book, the characters were really interesting but, in this movie, they were just all very poorly developed. I felt sorry above all for Michael Fassbender, easily one of the best actors of his generation, who got stuck playing nothing more than another drunk detective when Harry Hole was supposed to be such an intriguing character. It's a real shame because, with such a solid director and fine cast involved, the movie seemed to be at first a sure winner.

An average movie

“When I heard that they were adapting Jo Nesbo's best-seller book, I got pretty excited as it had the potential for another awesome Scandinavian franchise like 'Millenium' so this movie was definitely one of my highest priorities for 2017. Unfortunately, it was pretty much destroyed by the critics wh” read more

Twilight Zone: The Movie
Cast : John Lithgow What was it about? Four horror and science fiction segments, directed by four famous directors, each of them being a new version of a classic story from Rod Serling's landmark television series. My two cents: It is another movie I have been tracking down for many years mostly because it was one of the very few movies directed by Steven Spielberg that I hadn't watched so far. On top of that, I have always been a huge fan of 'The Twilight Zone' so this anthology involving 4 major directors sounded pretty amazing on paper. Unfortunately, it turned out to be only a decent watch at best. Indeed, out of the 5 parts (4 segments and a prologue), 4 were not bad but nothing really amazing and one was just seriously weak. Eventually, the 4th and final segment directed by George Miller was in my opinion probably the most effective part and the only issue it might have had is that it was such a classic Twilight Zone tale and therefore it was slightly predictable. Anyway, even if the whole project turned to be rather half-baked, I still think it is worth a look. My rating: 06/10 (for George Miller's segment and for the whole movie) Check the full review

Twilight Zone: The Movie
Cast : Scatman Crothers What was it about? The 2nd segment was directed by Steven Spielberg and, to be honest, it was pretty much the worst thing Spielberg as ever done in his career. Indeed, the whole thing was just lifeless, boring and the connection with the TV show was just really thin. Apparently, Spielberg had been so affected by the tragic helicopter accident during the shoot of John Landis's segment that he didn't care much for this project anymore and he shot his part in just 6 days just to fulfil his contractual engagement which might explain why the damned thing was actually so weak. My rating: 06/10 (for 'Twilight Zone: The Movie') / 04/10 (for the 'Kick the Can' segment) Check the full review
