A good movie

“I wasn't really sure what to expect from this movie but since I have a weak spot for Hilary Swank and since this movie had some decent rating on IMDb, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, the story was seriously generic and predictable. Indeed, the caregiver was at first a mes” read more

Black Panther
Notes: Well, eventually pretty much like with ‘Thor: Ragnarok’, even though I really liked the damned thing, I didn’t think it was so revolutionary though. In my opinion, the main issue was that, after already 18 movies, the MCU has become too big and it has become a shore to link all these movies together and make sure they don’t break the continuity. In this case, as a result, at least half of the movie was spent on explaining why Wakanda and Black Panther were not involved before in the MCU and why they will be involved from now on. I mean, it was rather well done but it wasn’t really compelling and I hope that, after ‘Infinity War’, Marvel will stop to link all their movies together and provide some much needed flexibility to their directors. Anyway, beside this point, it was still a really cool super-hero flick, no doubt about it. In fact, it will probably be a milestone in motion picture history as being the first major black blockbuster ever made, not less than that. Indeed, Ryan Googler delivered a gorgeous movie with a fascinating fantasy African world. On top of that, they gave us an all-star black cast and 2 of the best bad guys in the MCU history (Erik Killmonger and Ulysses Klaue).

Notes: To be honest, it has been a while since I have watched this flick and maybe I should re-watch it again at some point. Basically, when I was studying in college, I went studying for a year in Cambridge and I took part in this film class which was really awesome. The idea was to watch every week a movie, starring from the silent era moving forward towards the 90’s and we would then discuss the movie seen during the class. So, this flick was one selected by our teacher and, of course, I had some huge expectations, especially since it was directed by the great Federico Fellini. Unfortunately, even though this movie has quite a stellar reputation, I didn’t like it much, I’m afraid. Basically, it was one of his whimsical tales, without much of a plot and this one was even downright psychedelic. Maybe I wasn’t in the right mood when I watched it but I had a rather hard time to see why it was supposed to be so great.

An average movie

“I had no idea what to expect from this movie but since it was recommended by one of my favorite listal members, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, even if it turned out to be a decent watch, I'm afraid it didn't really work for me. I mean, the beginning was pretty good and I” read more

Notes: It was my wife who actually introduced this movie to me when we first met. Indeed, it was one of her favorite movies, one of those that she saw so many times as a child, and she was (rightfully) shocked that I never saw the damned thing in my life. Well, even though I can see why it has been so much loved after so many years, to be honest, I didn't really connect with this movie. I mean, I do think that Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer both delivered some really solid performances and some of the tunes were rather catchy, but, unfortunately, the story was just rather sleep-inducing to me. Sure, it is really innocent and harmless but also terribly simplistic and frankly rather outdated. For example, don’t you think it is rather odd that Maria and the Captain would fall in love without having one single conversation? Sure, it is all inherent to the genre but it all felt rather fluffy to me. And what about this third act? Up to that point, it was a rather charming fairy tale so why on Earth did they bring WWII in the mix? Such a really serious historical tragedy didn’t belong in such a childish musical and I thought it was seriously misguided to portray them as some kind of resistance heroes. Anyway, it was obviously not my thing but it remains a classic.

A good movie

“As usual, I didn't have any clue about what this movie was about but it turned out to be very popular amongst our film club members. To be honest, it was a rather challenging movie to analyze and, personally, I did struggle with the lengthy and gruesome depiction of this slaughterhouse and I couldn'” read more
