Breathless (1960)
Notes: The first time I watched it, I must have been 15 or 16 years old, I thought it was just awesome and it became right away one of my favorite movies of all time. Basically, it is just a boy, a girl, a car and a gun, that's it, but because it is so simple, it became a really pure movie experience. However, even though those elements were quite simple, Godard did something quite revolutionary at the time which was stripping down many of the conventional narrative stereotypes (a core aspect of the French New Wave) making the whole thing even more spellbinding. Eventually, I re-watched it years later and I did lower my rating a little bit since there were a few dull moments but I absolutely remains one of my favorite French movies. Unfortunately, later on in his career, Godard will start to make really obscure movies and, in the process, more or less deliberately started to alineate his audience but this was his first directing feature and it became instantly a timeless masterpiece. Anyway, it is a great classic and I loved the damned thing.

Jem and the Holograms
Notes: Well, the damned thing turned out completely misguided. First of all, who was actually the target audience for this movie? I actually watched the cartoon when I was a kid back in the 90's but it was hardly one of the most popular cartoons back then. Furthermore, they obviously aimed the whole thing towards the young girls but they obviously had never heard of this old TV show. To make it more modern, they added a social media angle which was just so annoying as you would get some YouTube videos popping randomly with absolutely no link with what was going on. Furthermore, the way the characters used social media themselves made the whole thing looked like a very fake reality-TV show. Finally, what was the point with this robot? Seriously, I thought it would add something to their performance but it didn't have any impact after all. At least, some of the songs were not bad but it was obviously not enough to make this movie mildly entertaining.

A bad movie

“Obviously, I wasn't expecting much from this flick but since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, it turned out to be indeed pretty lame and completely misguided. First of all, who was actually the target audience for this movie? I mean, I actually watched the c” read more

Spartacus
Notes: I always think it is rather amusing when people tell me that 'Gladiator' is totally awesome. Do they know that the Peplum is actually one of the oldest genres in cinema and that 'Gladiator' is merely a reboot? Anyway, this movie was probably the least personal project for Stanley Kubrick as he was hired at the last minute by Kirk Douglas. Indeed, the whole thing was supposed to be directed by Anthony Mann but he was fired by Douglas who then hired Stanley Kubrick but they didn’t get along either and Douglas swore he would never work again with Kubrick. This movie was also the first and last time Kubrick made what you could call a 'standard' big budget studio feature without full control. Even so, I thought it was a really awesome flick with some spectacular scenes and it is definitely my favorite peplum. It is obviously the movie which stands out the most from Kubrick’s filmography as his touch is not so omnipresent and I think it is his most accessible flick but it is not necessarily a bad thing.

A very good movie

“When I heard that my uncle wanted to watch a movie about the tragedy in Utøya, I thought he meant the movie '22 July' directed by Paul Greengrass also coming out this year. Anyway, it doesn't really matter since it was such a powerful movie and easily one of the best I have seen this year. In my op” read more

A good movie

“Since I kept hearing some interesting things about this movie , I was quite eager to check it out. Well, eventually, it wasn't an easy watch, in fact, it was sometimes downright unpleasant to behold but, even so, I still think it was pretty good though. Basically, I think it could be described as so” read more

"@AVPGuyver21, in my opinion, 'Cape Fear' is more thriller than horror, and that applies for both versions."

An average movie

“Since Nick, my step-son, was really eager to check this flick, we went to see it in the movie theater when it was released. To be honest, I have to admit that it did turn out to be slightly better than I expected. Indeed, what bother me the most with the previous installment was that it was just too” read more

The Apartment
Notes: Since, it is a huge classic, I was really eager to check it out and I had some rather huge expectations. Indeed, it is supposed to be one of the greatest comedies ever made but, to be honest, even though I thought it was quite enjoyable and entertaining, I can’t say I wasn't really blown away by the whole thing. I mean, sure, it was pretty good, and I enjoyed it but I wasn't really laughing out loud but merely smiling during the whole thing. In my opinion, it is one of those comedies which was really great and ground-breaking when it was released but, nowadays, it all feels rather out-dated. I mean, it still remains a pretty good comedy, it is just I don’t really see what was so great about it. On top of that, I have to admit that Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine both gave some really solid performances. Considering Billy Wilder’s work, after watching 8 of his movies, I came to the conclusion that I enjoyed much more his dramas than his comedies. Anyway, even though I’m not a huge fan of this flick, it is still a classic.

Utøya: July 22
Notes: Eventually, the greatest success of this movie was to show not only that the guy shot more 170 people but, above all, the impact on the 300 remaining survivors would be psychologically traumatised maybe forever. Indeed, for more than an hour, they have nowhere to hide, they have no idea about what is really going on, who is attacking them and why, and if someone will finally show up to stop this nightmare. In the mean time, the shooting keeps going on and they do see other survivors running around scared shitless and they hear people screaming so it was a real nightmare and that's why the one-take gimmick really worked. Indeed, this way, there was no break to allow the viewers to breath for a moment and, this way, not only you're on the first line but you get eventually completely sucked in this tragedy. Anyway, to conclude, the whole thing was just really heartbreaking and terrifying at same time.
