An average movie

“Yesterday, I saw 'Byzantium' which was the most recent movie directed by Neil Jordan so I decided to watch afterwards another movie he made which I still hadn't watch so far. Well, before watching the damned thing, I was actually aware of its rather lame reputation and, unfortunately, it turned out ” read more

Pierrot le Fou
Notes: โ€˜A bout de souffleโ€™ is and will remain one of my favorite movies forever and I have been following Godard ever since his masterpiece really blew me away but, unfortunately, no one of his movies have reached this level of awesomeness, at least not in my opinion. The point is that, pretty soon in his career, his movies started to get pretty cryptic really soon and become harder and harder to follow and, nowadays, except for a few die-hard fans, we all pretty much agree that his work has become some incomprehensible pseudo-intellectual and political mix. This movie is a pretty good example. Indeed, it has in fact a really good reputation and maybe I should give it a second chance at some point in the future but, to be honest, I really had a hard time to care about the whole thing. Basically, 5 years after โ€˜A bout de souffleโ€™, Godard was working again with Jean-Paul Belmondo and I was expecting something amazing. In fact, this movie was really similar to this impressive debut but while this great classic was inspiring and mesmerizing, this follow-up was rather pretentious and just way too cryptic for my taste.

An average movie

“I wasn't really sure what to expect from this movie but since I always had a weak spot for Neil Jordan's work, I was quite eager to check it out. First of all, it was pretty neat that Jordan was making another vampire movie almost 20 years after 'Interview with the Vampire' and it was interesting th” read more

A very good movie

“To be honest, I had actually no idea what this movie was about but since there was a nice cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, I have to admit that I actually really enjoyed the damned thing, even if it took a while to really grab me. At first, it seemed to be dealing with a ” read more

The Battle of Algiers
Notes: The whole thing turned out be even better than I expected which is something that very rarely happens. Obviously, it was highly controversial in France where it was banned for many years which is not surprising since this movie was shot only 3 years after the actual independence of Algeria. This civil war lasted almost a decade and was very traumatizing for France so, to get such a bleak realistic depiction of this war so soon after this conflict was ended was probably too hard to swallow for the French audience. Anyway, first of all, as a history lesson, it is pretty amazing and, in my opinion, it should be actually compulsory viewings for all teenagers. On top of that, it is not only an incredibly valuable historical feature. Indeed, as a movie, it was just fascinating to behold and I would go as far saying that it was one of the most spellbinding thrillers I have ever seen.
