An average movie

“Al Pacino used to be one of my favorite actors but unfortunately, pretty much like Robert De Niro, he has spent the last 10, maybe even 20 years, wasting his great talent with some really weak movies. With this in mind, I wasn't expecting much from this movie but since the ratings were actually dece” read more

A good movie

“Since I always had a weak spot for Werner Herzog's work, I was quite eager to check this movie, especially since it was available on Netflix. First of all, I have noticed that, by now, I have seen more documentaries directed by the German master than his actual fictional work. Anyway, once again, He” read more

The Graduate
Notes: Since this movie had quite a reputation, I had some really high expectations but, to be honest, I thought it was a decent watch but it didn’t really blow me away. I don’t know, the concept definitely had some potential but, in my opinion, it could have been better developed. On top of that, it was really difficult to take Dustin Hoffman seriously as a student when the guy was in fact already 30 years at the time. To make things worse, he and Anne Bancroft were in fact less than 6 years apart in real life, even though she was supposed to be more than twice his age. Same thing with Katharine Ross who was just 9 years younger than the actress playing her mom. Of course, you might argue that it was a comedy so I shouldn’t take it so seriously but I thought it was just fairly entertaining but not much more than that, I’m afraid. Anyway, even though I thought it was slighlty disappointing, it is still a classic.

Notes: This movie was actually barely seen when it was released but it has reached cult status through the years. To my surprise, I realised that 'Payback', a pretty good underrated Mel Gibson flick, was actually a remake of this movie which was something I actually didn't know before watching the damned thing. Anyway, above all, I was impressed by the directing. Indeed, especially during the first 20 minutes, the whole thing had a very strong surrealistic quality and it was quite mesmerizing to behold. Unfortunately, the rest of the movie, while it was entertaining, was much more straightforward. Maybe it had to do with the fact that I saw it on the BBC without subtitles and maybe I missed some details in the dialogues. I was also impressed by Lee Marvin, an actor which I knew by name but with whom I'm not so familiar with. So, the directing and acting were really interesting but I wasn't really so sure about the story which was rather pedestrian, at least, in my opinion. It is still a decent watch though.

“To be honest, since this movie had been a big critical flop, I wasn't really expecting much from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Nicole Kidman, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, as I expected, it wasn't really good, I'm afraid. First of all, even though Nicole Kidman did try,” read more
