Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told

That Night
Notes: To be honest, the beginning was rather messy. Indeed, I donā€™t really understand why they started to show these police officers in their precinct. Then, they suddenly switched to a rather unclear robbery. Fortunately, after that, the movie finally did settle with a basic structure which was, at least, easier to follow. Indeed, you then had two parts. During the first part, you basically followed the main character running around in the streets trying to escape from the police and I think there was some surrealist quality about this 1st half. Indeed, they gave at the time no intertitles and it was visually pretty neat as well which I didnā€™t expect from such a vintage Ozu feature. The second part was also quite interesting because it completely flipped your expectations concerning this man but also concerning the guy chasing him. In this case, this humanistic approach was much more some classic Ozu but he was definitely the master in this genre, giving time and time such seemingly simple and yet complex human characters and this movie was no exception. Eventually, the material was a little bit slight though and it is no wonder that the running time was around 60 mins.

A good movie

“I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was directed by Ozu and since it was on YouTube, I thought I might as well check it out. Not so long ago, I saw also ā€˜TĆ“kyĆ“ no kĆ“rasuā€™ from the same director but, to be honest, it was actually rather disappointing. Fortunately” read more

“I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. “I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since I have a weak spot for Abbie Cornish and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, I was actually surprised by how boring the damned thing turned out to be. Basically, it is a typica” read more

A good movie

“Since I kept hearing some pretty good things about this film, I was quite eager to check it out. Eventually, even if Iā€™m not a huge fan of ā€˜Black Pantherā€™, without the success of this Marvel installment, it is doubtful that this movie would have ever been greenlighted. Anyway, I thought the da” read more

De Dans van Natasja
Notes: Even though Jos Stelling is one of the most highly regarded directors from the Netherlands, I have to admit that Iā€™m not really familiar with his work. Indeed, I have seen only his previous directorial effort, ā€˜Het Meisje en de Doodā€™ which did win the Golden Calf for the best Dutch film of the year but, to be honest, I didnā€™t care much for it. Well, even though the rest of the film club was really enthusiast, I have to admit that I had a hard time to really connect with this (probably) last movie from the Dutch master. I mean, I have to admit that it was visually really neat and definitely from another level than your average Dutch production, thatā€™s for sure. Unfortunately, the movie itself was just too cryptic for my taste and I would have a really hard time to tell what Stelling was trying to tell or to achieve here. Another thing that bothered me was the gimmick of the mute main character. In my opinion, it is a rather cheap trick to make your character deep and mysterious by having him saying nothing but he felt more like an empty shell than an actual human-being. Above all, I donā€™t think he was really interesting and this Russian woman who he met half way through was actually much more intriguing. The other tricky thing with this movie was that it was so random and itā€™s as if Stelling created his own logic as he went along and, like the rest of the movie, I guess it is really a matter of taste if youā€™re going to appreciate this approach. Anyway, even if it didnā€™t really work for me, I gave it a few extra points for being so artistic and challenging.
