A good movie

“To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since it was directed by George Miller, I thought I might as well check it out. Eventually, it turned out to be a very classic tale but the fact that the story was fairly derivative was not a problem at all. Indeed, it was actu” read more

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Cast : Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, Elsa Pataky What was it about? The origin story of renegade warrior Furiosa before her encounter and teamup with Mad Max. My two cents: I’m not surprised that this sequel didn’t turn out to be such a huge box-office success after all. It’s not that it was bad, it’s just that it is really an acquired taste and that it seems that ‘Fury Road’ was just a struck of luck back then. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, I have to admit that Furiosa was definitely a badass character and it was pretty cool to make a movie about her origins. However, the main issue was probably the fact that the damned thing was too long. Indeed, it was 30 mins longer than ‘Fury Road’ and such action movies should never last more than 2 hrs. In this case, it took maybe 1 hour before Anya Taylor-Joy finally showed up. By the way, she is definitely one of the most fascinating actresses at work nowadays and she delivered another strong performance here. The funny thing is that I was convinced that she was much smaller than Charlize Theron but, in fact, they are both about the same size. Anyway, there is something really statuesque about Theron and, in spite of Taylor-Joy’s impressive talent, I’m afraid she doesn’t have the same physical presence though. Concerning the action scenes, well, George Miller is pretty much the all-time master in this genre and I guessed they worked fine in this area. My rating: 07/10 Check the full review

Rebel Moon: Part Two - The Scargiver
Notes: Once again, even though the critics for this movie were rather abysmal, I don’t think it was so bad. Indeed, in my opinion, this follow-up was neither better or worse than its predecessor and, at least, you have to admit that Zack Snyder is actually pretty consistent. Above all, what amazed me the most was how Snyder managed to get 4 hrs of running time from this material? Seriously, I don’t think it was really so bad, it was more that it felt so empty somehow. In this case, this village and these warriors had 5 days before the enemy would attack them and, out of these 5 days (which was ridiculously low), they took like 2 or 3 days to harvest wheat but it was rather pathetic. I mean, the whole idea was that the harvest would supposedly protect them but it was certainly not convincing. Of course, at some point, Atticus Noble gave the order to blast this whole village regardless of the harvest making their whole plan completely meaningless. In a similar fashion, sure, in ‘Seven Samurai’, a handful of skilled warriors could win against an army of bandits, but, in this case, they were facing an intergalactic super power would could blast them from out of space so I’m afraid the whole concept eventually didn’t work from the very beginning. At least, I think that Sofia Boutella was actually better but I think it was mostly because she had so very little dialogues this time around (like everyone else actually). Eventually, the funniest thing is that they gave an open ending for a possible sequel but, to be honest, I wish that Snyder would drop this, even if it did sound quite promising at first.

Bugonia
Release date (U.S.) : ??? 2025 directed by : Yorgos Lanthimos with : Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons plot : Two conspiracy obsessed young men kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth. Why do I want to see this ? Wow... Lanthimos and Emma Stone really seem to inspire each other since it will be the 3rd movie they make together in only 3 years. Eventually, it still rather rather hard to keep up their productive pace as I still haven't watched the 2nd one ('Kinds of Kindness') as I just came out. Anyway, I really loved 'Poor Things' and even more 'The Favourite' so I will definitely check this one out as well.

What
Note : Before Titanic, Leonardo DiCaprio did this small movie. What a perfomance ! Until now, it is his best one. Johnny Depp, as usual, is very good. The story is moving and the directing is great aswell. Finally, it is a realistic movie about the loving but also difficult relationships in a familly when someone has a handicap. A great masterpiece. For more info : Top 10 best movies 1993

Infinite
Notes: I have noticed that it turned out to be a huge flop when it was released (it was even nominated for the Razzie of the worst movie of the year) and, well, I can't say I was surprised as the damned thing turned out to be pretty much an unwatchable mess. Seriously, right from the intro explaining how this concept was supposed to work, I thought it already sounded really half-baked. To make things worse, Sophie Cookson's character repeated exactly the same explanation maybe 30 mins later. Concerning the cast, there were a few decent actors involved but, in my opinion, Mark Wahlberg was completely miscast here though. Indeed, even though he can be certainly entertaining, he was never convincing whatsoever playing a man supposedly suffering from schizophrenia. The fact that he looked ridiculous carrying all the time his samurai sword probably didn’t help either and I wish he did stop delivering wise-*ss oneliners every 2 mins. In fact, I think the concept might have had some potential. Indeed, what if we could remember past lives? The metaphysical implications would be huge. And, indeed, how someone would cope with this? Becoming schizophrenic or mentally ill from all this didn't seem so far-fetched but, instead of digging deeper in what it could mean and the impact it might have on an individual, all these ideas were buried very deep under so much nonsense and so many boring and derivative action scenes.
