Need for Speed
Notes: Well, at least, it wasn't a shameless copycat of 'The Fast and The Furious' but that's probably the only positive thing about this movie. Seriously, to make a movie about a video game is usually a bad idea but to make a movie about a race video game was even worse. I mean, I did play one of the 'Need for Speed' games many years ago and I have to admit that it was pretty neat but there was no story involved whatsoever so they had to come up with something but the end-result was long, rather boring and most of the time really preposterous. The most bewildering thing was the impressive cast they managed to get for this movie (Aaron Paul, Dominic Cooper, Imogen Poots, Rami Malek, Dakota Johnson, Michael Keaton) and you wonder why they all got involved in such weak and pretty much doomed to fail project.

“I wasn't really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Kate Winslet, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, even though this movie was apparently a big success in Australia, to be honest, I really struggled to care about the damned thing. First of all, even though Win” read more

A good movie

“I really had no idea what to expect from this movie but since it had a pretty good reputation and since I have a weak spot for John Frankenheimer's work, I thought I might as well check it out. “Well, I keep trying with the Netflix original features but most of them turn out to be at best rather underwhelming and that's a rather generous statement. This movie was a perfect example. The Seventh Seal
Notes: This masterpiece left a big impression on me and I should definitely rewatch it at some point. Indeed, the directing, the story and the acting, above all by Max van Sydow, was nothing short of amazing. I was above all impressed by the ominous chess game with Death, one of the most legendary film scenes ever put together. Still, like I said before, even though I was impressed, somehow, there were good chunks of the movie that literally went over my head. Later on, I watched ‘Fanny and Alexander’, another masterpiece directed by Bergman, and I had even a harder time to get into this flick. In fact, to be honest, I can’t say I’m a big fan of Ingmar Bergman's work and, after watching 6 of his movies, except for this great classic, none of them really blew me away. Anyway, it is probably one of the most thoughtful movies ever made and it is definitely a must see of any decent movie lover.

12 Angry Men (1957)
Notes: Well, sometimes, I have some huge expectations before watching an old classic and some of them turn out to be slightly disappointing but that was definitely not the case here. Indeed, what a great picture! Even though it is rather old, it has not lost any of its strenghts. I think it took me maybe 5 minutes to get into this story and, as a result, I thought it was just spellbinding from the very start until the very end. Nowadays, in a thriller, you have chases, shootings, improbable twists,... Fortunately, not in this movie. In my opinion, it must be one of the purest movies I have ever seen, you just have 12 guys stuck into a room, that's all what you will get but in spite of these limitations, it was just completely entertaining. Basically, it is just about the power of words and acting. No effects, no tricks, just an incredibly thoughtfull and smart picture and it is definitely one of my all-time favorites.

Wild Strawberries
Notes: Well, to be honest, as usual with Bergman, I had a rather hard time to connect with the damned thing. Still, the fact that I didn't connect with this movie was probably because I'm not smart enough and not because it wasn't a good movie, that's for sure. Eventually, as usual with Bergman's work, I enjoyed more thinking afterwards about his movies than actually watching them and this one was a perfect example. First of all, even though our Western world is getting older and older, we still get very few movies dealing with old age and this movie is easily one of the best about this subject. Indeed, through his whole life, the main character was really successful professionally but he didn't care at all about his relationship with the people around him but, in his twilight years, he is looking back to his past, which is rather usual, and starts to show more compassion towards the few people still around him. However, if this change of attitude and way of thinking made complete sense with the main character, I think it was rather unbelievable that Marianne would suddenly change her mind about him and think that he was a great guy just after spending one road trip with him. Anyway, even if it didn't completely blow me away, it is still a major classic.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018)
Release date (U.S.) : 16 November 2018 directed by : Ethan Coen and Joel Coen with : James Franco, Liam Neeson, Brendan Gleeson, Tom Waits, Tim Blake Nelson plot : An anthology western following six different storylines centering on a man named Buster Scruggs. Why do I want to see this ? It was actually supposed to be a mini-series but they eventually changed it to an anthology but, anyway, who cares? Indeed, anything from the Coen brothers is always worth a look, even if their previous Western, 'True Grit', was decent at best but nothing really amazing in my opinion. Furthermore, it will be also available on Netflix which might make the hardcore film lovers angry but, since I have a Netflix subcription, I'm glad I will be able to watch it right away on its release date in my living room. My verdict : Well, even if it won't go down as one of their best movies, I thought it was fairly enjoyable and, at least, it was a slight improvement on 'Hail, Caesar!' which was, in my opinion, one of their weakest movies so far. First of all, even though some hard-core movie fans might prefer the good old celluloid, the digital photography displayed in this movie was beautiful and, in my opinion, it was the most gorgeous movie delivered by the Coen brothers so far. Concerning the little stories they gave us, to be honest, even though they were not bad, none of them really impressed me. The first one dealing with Buster Scruggs himself was by far the best one but all the others were going from just decent to actually almost weak. Eventually, the whole thing gave the feeling that the brothers couldn't come up with one really good story so they compiled a bunch of rather half-baked tales together.

What is it about? Two strangers are drawn to a mysterious pharmaceutical trial that will, they're assured, with no complications or side-effects whatsoever, solve all of their problems, permanently. Things do not go as planned. My verdict: Well, even though it wasn't a complete home-run, it was still easily the most original and wildest serie I have seen so far on Netflix. Eventually, the main issue was that there were just too much stuff going on and, therefore, not everything really worked but the damned thing was still mostly quite spellbinding to behold. Will I watch the following seasons? Since it was a mini-serie, there won't be any other seasons
