The Odyssey
Release date (U.S.) : 17 July 2026 directed by : Christopher Nolan with : Matt Damon, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Tom Holland, Lupita Nyong'o, Elliot Page, Jon Bernthal, Samantha Morton, John Leguizamo plot : Follows Odysseus in his perilous journey home after the Trojan War, showcasing his encounters with Polyphemus, the Sirens, Circe, and finishing with his reunion with his wife, Penelope. Why do I want to see this ? After the disappointing 'Tenet', the first misfire in a pretty much flawless career, Nolan made a major come-back in 2023 with 'Oppenheimer'. Even though he had some success with his historical features ('Dunkirk' was also a major critical success at the time), to be honest, I actually prefer when he gives us some really wild and ambitious SF feature. Anyway, even if he is going to give us another historical epic tale instead of some good old SF, this movie will still be my highest priority for 2026.

An average movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since it was starring Angelina Jolie and since it seemed to have a decent reputation, I was quite eager to check it out. First of all, I have to admit that I didn’t know much about Gia Carangi and it was pretty cool to get to know her. How” read more

“To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since there was a decent cast involved and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, it turned out be a typical quirky indie comedy and, of course, they went for the road-trip genre which ” read more

He Who Gets Slapped
Notes: It turned out to be such a weird but also quite fascinating movie. Indeed, narratively speaking, it took such wild turns, most of it was actually quite unpredictable. For example, if you would look at the poster, you wouldn’t expect it to start with an inventor who was double-crossed by his benefactor. When people get a sh*tty deal, they start to drink heavily or take drugs but this guy, for some reason, decided to become a clown which seemed and was just so random and, yet, the end-result was quite spellbinding to behold. Indeed, they gave us some rather surreal circus scenes and, in my opinion, it was the saddest clown act I have ever seen. On the other hand, without the context, how would I have reacted if I saw this clown getting slapped and slapped again? Maybe I would have thought that it was actually hilarious? It still did feel like some crude and mean sense of humor though. One of the main reasons why the damned thing actually worked was obviously Lon Cheaney. Indeed, Cheaney was arguably one of the best actors that ever lived and, even though it might not be one of his most famous movies, his performance here was quite incredible. It must have been one of the most complex characters I have ever seen and I don’t think I understood some of his actions. I mean, come on, what a strange way to handle a traumatic experience and, yet, with Lon Cheaney playing the guy, it actually all made sense somehow.

Notes: As usual with my film club, I didn’t know anything about it before watching this movie. However, I have to admit that I was actually already familiar with Andrea Arnold’s work and there was a similar vibe to her previous movies ‘American Honey’ and, above all, ‘Fish Tank’. As far I was concerned, I was actually slightly bothered by the lack of context. I mean, sure, it was taking place nowadays in England but I couldn’t pinpoint where (it was apparently taking place in Kent). Anyway, if you ever wondered what was the state of affairs in England nowadays, well, it is pretty bad, that’s for sure. Indeed, apparently, nobody works, nobody goes to school, and all teens are destined to become parents even before they become 15 years old. In spite of the barren environment, it was still a beautiful movie though but, even though you might expect something hyper-realistic, Andrea Arnold did add some fantastic elements but it was really an acquired taste though. Concerning the acting, Barry Keoghan gave here another really solid performance showing that he is slowly becoming one of the most interesting actors at work nowadays. But of course, Nykiya Adams (who was really 12 years old when the movie was made) was the one who really had to carry the whole thing and she was quite spellbinding to behold.
