Silence
Cast : Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver, Liam Neeson What was it about? In the 17th century two Jesuit priests face violence and persecution when they travel to Japan to locate their mentor and to spread the gospel of Christianity. My two cents: Since I'm a huge of fan of Martin Scorsese, of course, I was really eager to check this flick but there were a couple of things that worried me about this project. First of all, even though Scorsese had announced that he will direct this movie, he kept pushing it indefinitely to release something else and, when it finally seemed that he would finally get it done, I had the feeling that it was partially because he was contractually obligated and also to finally getting done with it. On top of that, it wasn't exactly a huge critical success when it was released so, to be honest, I had lowered my expectations and I thought it might turn out to be a minor effort for this great master. Well, even though it was definitely one of his least accessible movies, the damned thing was actually quite spellbinding to behold. The fact that I have always been fascinated by the subject of religion certainly did help and I thought that this movie was a really interesting study on faith and on how, at the same time, it can be completely misguided but also really inspiring. With this movie, you can pretty much feel how conflicted Scorsese will always be towards the Catholic church even though you might wonder if almost 3 hours were really necessary for this journey. Still, even though it won't be considered as one of his best movies, I'm amazed by how much it touched me. My rating: 07/10 Check the full review

Dumb and Dumber To
Notes: I actually saw 'Dumb & Dumber' in the movie theater when it was released 20 years ago but, to be honest, even if I should maybe check it out again after all these years, I really didn't like the damned thing, I have always been amazed that it is pretty much considered as a classic and, in my opinion, it must be one of the most overrated movies ever made. So, with this in mind, obviously, I didn't expect much from this sequel and, indeed, the whole thing was pretty lame confirming me in my beliefs that there was and there is still nothing funny about these 2 characters. I mean, I'll have to admit it, I did chuckle a few times but I didn't happen really often and most of the movie was just really painful to watch.

A good movie

“To be honest, I never really understood the general grudge against this movie. I mean, sure, I have to admit it, it was definitely not a masterpiece and it was really not on the same level as 'Alien'  and 'Aliens' but, still, I think it is actually a decent movie and it has always been one of my gu” read more

Fanny and Alexander
Notes: Even though this movie is considered as a massive masterpiece, to be honest, I really had a hard time to care for the damned thing and, I guess, this one belongs to the category 'misunderstood masterpiece’. What I mean by that is that I was able to see all the craft behind it, I could see it was obviously a work of Art but I'm afraid I didn't really get it. Basically, it was not really my cup of tea. Indeed, it was very bleak and there was a lot of weird stuff and symbolism that went just way over my head. I mean, during the whole thing I was scratching my head thinking 'What did he mean with all this?' and, honestly, at the end of the movie, I didn't get many answers. Still, such a challenging movie should always be praised when you see how simplistic and moronic are the movies produced by Hollywood and I will not a blame a movie because I just didn't get it. Furthermore, even though, I missed many things, it remains such a well done flick and the whole thing was still quite fascinating to look at. Maybe I'll re-watch it again in the future to make up my mind for good.

“To be honest, I had no idea what to expect from this rather obscure feature but since I have a weak spot for Rachel Weisz and Tom Hiddleston, I thought I might as well check it out. The Night of the Shooting Stars
Notes: A long time ago, when I was a student, I spent a year in Cambridge and, when I was there, I had the pleasure to follow a course about film history. The goal with this course was to start from the very beginning and go slowly up to the 80’s, if I’m not mistaken. Well, from all the movies we saw, this movie was probably the one which had the least impact on me. In fact, it was not the worst movie I saw. Indeed, ‘Cabiria’ was for example borderline unwatchable and I really didn’t care much for ‘The Searchers’ (I should give this classic a second change though). This movie directed by the Taviani brothers was actually pretty good, that’s for sure, but I can’t it really blow away and, to be honest, I actually forgot most of it which is never a good sign.

Note: When I was younger (I'm a very old guy now...), Amsterdam was my favorite Dutch city. Lots of fun and interesting cultural stuff. Nowadays, it's little too touristic for my taste and I prefer Utrecht. But still a very beautiful city.

“Well, this movie would be one of the rare occasions that Adam Sandler would try something else than his usual (really lame) comedies. And, as usual, every time the guy goes out of his comfort zone, it turned out to be a flop at the box-office. To be honest, I thought it was not so bad after all. I m” read more
